0:00 Introduction
Style is a journey, and sometimes, even the best of journeys have a few wrong turns. Stick around to find out what I've bought throughout the years and maybe what I shouldn't have.
One of the biggest parts of being a gentleman is owning your mistakes. We're all human, and no human is perfect. And today, I'll walk you through some of my biggest style purchase mistakes. If you've seen what other members of the Gentleman's Gazette team have regretted buying in the past, you'll have a pretty good idea how this video is going to go.
But rest easy-no one has made a mistake as big as Raphael's radioactive sweater.
0:34 → 1. Too Many Double-Breasted Jackets and Suits
0:52 → 2. Bold Patterned Items
2:32 → 3. Wacky Socks
3:08 → 4. Camouflage Field Jacket
3:43 → 5. Hats
4:25 → 6. Baggy Clothes
5:05 → 7. Buckle Graphic Tees
5:43 → 8. Big Fashion Watches
6:11 → 9. Creative Tie Clips
6:37 → 10. Green Linen Suit
7:36 Conclusion & Outfit Rundown
My advice to you, in the world of custom where the possibilities are endless, sometimes less is more. What do you think about my list? What are the regrettable items in your wardrobe?
Now, let's go over my outfit, which I'm happy to say is regret-free.
My outfit today is a burgundy suit in the fabric of Stylbiella, and I really like the color of it. I designed it with a ticket pocket, and I have peak lapels. I also have a pocket square from Fort Belvedere. I have a white shirt on from my brand and a pair of burgundy penny loafers from Beckett Simonon.
My fragrance today is the Marzocco from the Roberto Ugolini Collection. You can find this collection, as well as other classic Men's Wear accessories, on our Ford Belvedere website.

I like the field jacket. I would not layer or combine with a suit, but for a casual wear (walking the dogs or grill party) it is very versatile. I would tailor it around the waist and wear it with a simple T-shirt.

To be fair, that field jacket has a lot of use beyond wearing it over a suit. That's incredibly versatile in terms of casual wear, or even for hiking.

I have a Camo Jacket and Tanker Boots. When I wear either, (never together) in a population where few have seen them, it is a good conversation starter. It helps if you are still trim and fit too. Old timers recognize them, and they can tell by looking at you that you are a veteran. I can't imagine wearing either if I wasn't. They look good. But more than that, they make you feel good.

If I could make a suggestion about the green linen suit you seem to have gone for too narrow a cut. It is the current fashion but I'd say linen benefits from a looser cut because of the way it can crease if it's bundled too close to the body rather than being allowed to drape. In the clip that seemed particularly noticeable in the sleeves.

Yeah, all the wrinkling on the sleeves is obvious that it's just too tight. It's a really nice color though.

The only thing possibly different is how much one is willing to invest for a suit that they will out grow or high quality accessories that a teen wouldn't treat with proper care. Feet are the 1st thing to reach their full growth so spending on timeless shoes should probably be the 1st and most expensive item of a teens formal wardrobe as they could potentially last for 20-30 yrs with moderate wear. Wrt clothing, plenty of smaller sizes of high quality 2nd hand pieces always available. Unless they have fantastic genetics and hard gainers w/ high metabolism (most men don't), guys in their teens get larger in their 20's. Guys in their 20's get larger in their 30's and guys in their 30's get larger in their 40's & 50's.

Camo field jacket have their place, in the woods. Unless you want to look like a prepper. Don't regret the buy. Slightly different item, I have a Brooks Brother's non-vented field jacket. I bought it 30 plus years ago. Still looks good. I'm going to have it altered, adding double back vents. Keep the whale tie clip, just know when/where to wear it.

I have a bunch of wacky socks and mostly stopped wearing them now and I mostly wear dark and light grey bamboo socks as they look better and don't stand out as much and breathe better than cotton socks. I have a few hit or miss items over the years. For some reason, for many years I was buying and wearing shoes that were two sizes too big for me as I thought my feet were that size and have no idea why I thought that. One day I realised I was wearing the wrong size shoes and from then on, wore shoes that fit me perfectly rather than being too big. In the early 2000s when I was in high school, I had a pair of trousers that looked like parachute pants as they were puffy. I thought they looked cool until I saw a girl in my class come in to school one day, wearing the exact same pair. Never wore them again. For years I was buying trousers with a 34 waist thinking the waist would fit me as that is what I measured my waist as. I wore them with a belt and thought that was normal. Then one day I went to a shop and got properly fitted for a shirt and trousers. There, It was suggested to me that I'd get a better fit in the trousers if I went down 2 inches in them. Now while my waist is still measures 34 inches, I now mostly wear 32 inch waist trousers and they fit me perfectly. While I don't regret buying all the trousers I had wore for years, I just wish I had realised sooner. I have one hat which, while I don't regret buying it per say, I haven't found much opportunities to wear it. It is a black felt cowboy hat that was a bit expensive as I had it custom made for me. While it is a great hat and well made and worth the price, I think I should have looked for a different style of black felt hat like a Trilby that I could wear more without it standing out as much.

Yeah, Ivan I agree on prioritizing texture over pattern. Some times, I'm tempted by a jacket or sportcoat with a strong check but then I always wonder whether it will look like I'm wearing a table cloth. It's also just easier to match with your other clothes. I always prefer a subtler check, houndstooth or herringbone. I think we all have to be more hesitant especially when we're just not sure about the look, instead of thinking that we'll make it work somehow. It rarely if ever does.

Meh. Life is just a long list of hits and misses. My worst sartorial fail came back in the early 90s when I was still in the navy. I wanted a suit and being young with a desire to make a bit of a statement, I opted for something that seemed like a good choice for bold and stylish. It seemed so cool when I saw the color pattern and material in the tailor shop. But when I got it home and tried it on in front of the mirror, I was appalled and never put it on again. I don't even know how to describe the suit other than to say that I am pretty sure that somewhere, there is a 1957 Chevy missing its upholstery.

If you were in middle or high school, listened to hip hop, late 90s, or early 2000s, you had no choice but to wear baggy clothes. This video actually has me thinking of all the baggy clothes I too used to wear. Haha. Great video.

Don’t tell suit supply that you can’t wear a double breasted jacket with random pieces of clothing that a child might wear, long in the short places, short in the long places 😁

I disagree regarding socks. Socks are fun. You just have to wear them in the right situations. Boardroom meeting, probably not the place for SpongeBob socks.

Hard disagree on the camo jacket. Americana Dream Aparrel proved you can incorporate surplus military with traditional clothes in a very classy manner. You have to find an appropriate pattern and piece of gear to do that. Very hard to do but looks very cool when you pull it off

How we perceive ourselves plays a massive part in the wardrobe decisions we make. While it's great to ensure you have confidence in yourself, it's also useful to make sure you don't go overboard in telling yourself things that aren't true about your physicality

I saw the winky face. But a lot of classic style for menswear is identifying areas of your physique that are "not your favorite" and choosing clothing that helps to create a more pleasing silhouette.

Avoid presenting yourself with your hands in your pockets. A mans hands should always be visible. When presenting himself he should seem attentive. Witholding the sight of both hands indicates a lack of respect to the people before you.

True - but one hand in a pocket can seem very casual and confident. I defintitely agree with you on not having BOTH hands in your pockets.

If we're going to talk about M-65 field jackets, I could see myself wearing a leather one: it's tasteful, more unassuming, and just as practical. The old field jackets are an eminently functional design which, in my opinion, needs to be aesthetically and materially updated for modern wearers, so that they can take advantage of its practicality without looking like a survivalist or (if you'll excuse me) a homeless person.

I disagree with the socks. When you’re expected to dress conservatively (lawyers, etc) then adding a small splash of color enlivens the outfit.

Would you consider crazy socks to be a small splash of color or distracting against a conservative outfit?
@SilverOilman
@SilverOilman 13 күн бұрын
@@gentlemansgazette The former. Especially when the pants/slacks/trousers break lower than what’s shown above in the video. Such a high break is also not conservative.

Without sounding like 'm shilling for The Gentlemen's Gazette (I am not affiliated with them in any way) their shadow stripe socks strike the perfect blend of adding a pop of conservative colors. I have at least 20 different pairs of these types of socks (not all from them) and it is very easy to coordinate pants/socks/shoes.
