I tried the Formex Essence on at our AD and it is a killer watch. It is SO comfortable and does not look puny on my 7.5” wrist. The only thing that stopped me from pulling the trigger on one as my GADA was the lack of a screw-down crown. Nonetheless, I still lust after it on a regular basis. Thanks for the video, Shane.

I've gone back and forth on a Railmaster. I always wanted a black (or is it more grey) dial one. Although the last time I was looking at one online I kept thinking the dial might be too close to my Monta Triumph. I got the Casio A1100 two weeks after it came out. I respect Casio hugely as a brand (I actually have a top-of-the-range e-piano from Casio standing in my living room), but I've never liked their designs. I find them cluttered, clumsy, far too much redundant writing, awkward colour schemes. This is different. It is a really classy, nice-looking 80s retro watch, and I very much enjoy wearing it as a beater, e.g. when I'm running.

However, as always seems to happen l I got to try on a couple of watches when I was bored one day including the Seiko SPB237J1 and just loved it. So ended up buying it in Chrono24 plus the seller did me a great deal on an Alpinist at the same time. Then I finally cracked by backing the Loresum LS04 after being so tempted by the LS03. So pretty much used all my budget for this year. Only way I'm getting one of the Forex, Farer or CW is by selling some watches so let's see what's not used much in the first half of the year. "the manufacturer they're using for these is one that makes dials for Grand Seiko" Wait a minute, I thought Grand Seiko production is all in house, or vertically integrated, as they say. Is that not the case?
@RelativeTime8 ай бұрын
I could be wrong, I heard it from an Orient Dealer. They said the dials are made in Shinshu at a facility called Toki no Takumi Kobo. Supposedly they make the snowflake and a few other dials for GS there. Now like I said I don't know for sure, but it's also possible that this is a Seiko owned facility. Orient is part of the greater Seiko family through Epson. From what I remember there is also a lot of overlap within companies as well. With Epson manufacturing movements for Seiko. In fact I think an Espon division even makes the Spring Drives for Grand Seiko. I remember seeing that on the Spring Drive wiki page. But again, take all this with a grain of salt. I'm not 100% sure. -quick edit Just looked up a few things. I think the place is also called The Shinshu Watch Studio. www.grand-seiko.com/us-en/worldofgrandseiko/manufacture/shinshuwatchstudio The fist sentance on that page says it's a "Seiko Epson" Facility.

I'm also interested to try a Formex, but the biggest one we have in common is the Citizen. AQ4091-56L (blue dial) has been living in my head for a couple years now. I finally bought my 1st Citizen recently (ref. AT6080-53L), and it's such a great watch for ~$400 it made me all the more curious to try the AQ4091. The AT6080-53L feels like "exit watch" material to me (in the "beater" category), and I bet the AQ4091 can fill the "casual" slot for me (and it could serve as a dress watch in such a rare situation). As I continue to simplify my collection and zero in on my preferences, I may end up with a couple Citizens in prominent roles.
@RelativeTime8 ай бұрын
The blue AQ4091 looks the best, but I found a deal on a like new black one. The black one seems like a SARB033 type watch. One that can fill just about any role. Plus it's the ultimate grab-and-go quartz. High Accuracy and Perpetual Calendar.
@vonkruel8 ай бұрын
@@RelativeTimeI might jump at a deal on the black dial as well because it's always a safe color. I'm not even sure if I have my heart set on the blue. I got a black dial PRX and I've never regretted that. I agree a perpetual calendar is a fantastic feature on watch with analog dial & hands, and it's one of the things that attracted me to the AT6080. It's not a HAQ, but the H100 is a fantastic movement. Traveling? No problem, you can move forward or back in 1-hour increments _with no interruption to timekeeping_ , as you can also do on AQ4091 I'm sure. Bulova also makes nice HAQ movements with a smooth sweeping second hand (8 Hz equivalent), but let's see them put one in a watch that I really want to wear. Their Jet Star line are well sized, but none of them really grab me. For ultimate convenience in a regularly worn watch, I feel I do want solar charging anyway.
@RelativeTime8 ай бұрын
@@vonkruel I didn't know that one had the jumping hour too. Good to know. I thought that was a genius idea with this one. Like you said.. traveling and Daylight savings. No problem. Then with the HAQ you could probably go 6 or so years before having to reset it. Maybe longer.

Love the power reserve orients, but like many others out there the Roman numeral is a turn off. I bought a regular orient power reserve and it’s good so far. The titanium ds action diver is a 38mm which I think feels a little strange and I love the bracelet color but heard it’s poorly made. And finally, that black glycine moonphase had potential. I just couldn’t pull trigger due to cheap looking dial, eyesore of a date window and 40mm size like it’s some sort of field watch. Didn’t like that. Moonphase should be dressy IMO.

It's great. I think my three favorite things are red, titanium, and no date and this has all three. It's very lightweight and it has a short lug to lug making it feel compact even though I don't have a small wrist. The numerals are actually blocks of lume like you'd see on a Tudor or the new Oris ProPilot. The internal bezel was a little wonky when I got it but it seems to have sorted itself out after I rotated it many, many times. I also ponyed up for the titanium bracelet. That may be the weakest part. It's lightweight and the finishing as well done, but the clasp isn't very impressive. Still, it's not a requirement to obtain the bracelet when purchasing one of the new aqua compressors.

@@RelativeTime None of that shite, that's for sure. You should encourage people to reach for a real watch, a watch they can hand down to a child. A watch that you don't throw away because it needs a service. Ideally a Rolex. Yes they are expensive, but most of us can save for one - it might take a few years for some, but having a fuck-off watch on your wrist is a life-long pleasure, especially if you have enough interest in horology as to be watching KZbin videos. In the meantime, one or two G-Shocks will serve for many years, providing real value for a modest outlay. Some ideas for sub-200 quid watches might be (1) CASIO G-Shock GA-2100HC-4AJF, The Orange Hidden Coast is gorgeous, and will last forever. (2) The Casio AE1200 costs 30 quid, but if you bump your spend up to 200 quid, you can transform it into a fantastic watch with SKXMOD parts. Basically, keep most of your money for that heirloom piece. Don't waste it on garbage.
