Great I have an old Solid State amp someone gave me & I've not yet ventured into it to see if i can fix it. I hope it's as simple as yours that's a nice rig for your son I've played those Epi LP special II 's really good like a LP Junior basically.Then the Marshall He's got the Strap. Haha my Dad showed me how to clean the pots on my Guitar spraying TV Tuner cleaner i.e. Electronic Contact Cleaner now.

The potentiometers require lubrication. You'll need to lubricate them with DeoxIT F5 after you've sprayed them out with your choice of electronics cleaner. Do not use WD-40. If the grease was flushed out you'll feel that rough turning action. You'll want to keep them internally greased to also help prevent corrosion.

Way to go teaching kids how to play and repair things. My son is almost 16 now and I have tried my best to do the same with him teaching him how to repair engines and electronics. He plays guitar also and his amp has developed a light humming sound when turned on. So thank you for this video and we are gonna look for the problem this week. !!

The humming could also be gunk on the strings, a grounding issue, electrical or radio interference, or another mystery cause

I recently bought a Crate GT212 120 watt beast that has what I believe is a grounding issue (after watching this extremely helpful video) and some pots to clean. The amp has tons potential and I plan to fix it! It was great to see a father-son tech team. My father used to let me climb on to the bumper of his vehicles at the age of 4 too see him working on them and do regular maintenance. Your son will appreciate this video more as he gets older. Wish you both the very best!🌎

i'm glad dads like you exist. cause I've rarely seen a young person even interested in rock music, much less playing guitars. Its all about the DJ's and electronic music and autotune. A lot of kids underestimate how hard it is to actually make music because its so easy on a computer. Most music these days are made with the eyes and looking at the positions of notes, rather than what it sounds like
@Frewster
@Frewster 4 жыл бұрын
As someone who does both it's kinda funny to hear someone say this. I find it much easier to pick up a guitar to play some notes and figure out melodies. But when I want to produce something I gotta pick a voice, or waveform, set the right dB, think about compression, and what other effects I'm gonna use, and do all the percussion, etc., Ad nauseum. So in the great words of Jesse Jackson "We know that music is music, all of our people got a soul, our experience determines the texture, the taste and the sound of our souls" It's all relative I guess.

Capacitors don’t always bubble when they fail. It’s just as common for the rubber seal at the bottom to break down which causes the electrolyte to leak out the bottom.

You don't clean pots by spraying the shaft, you need to get to the actual pot by removing the head from the cab and spray into the pot so that the carbon trace gets cleaned.

The problem of most transistor guitar combo is the big panel inside. Instead of using separated small panels for the separated function (panel for the poweramp section, panel for a power supply section, panel for clean, panel for drive chanel), they solder everything in one panel. It is cheaper of course but way more fragile due to that if the amp loud enough, the big panel will resonate with bigger amplitude and this resonation breaks the soldering. Furthermore this breaks are tiny, almost invisible but blocks the signal. Or cases cracking sound. If they use separated panels for functions it could make the amplifier to modular like a PC what is the main reason of their popularity. Just imagine, if you like the clean channel but hate the drive channel, you can easily fix that without buying another amp.
@MoremanovaTk
@MoremanovaTk 7 жыл бұрын
Modular "amps" exist, they just cost a lot more (time, learning curve and money) than most people are willing to pay for. Any professional sound tech will use a gain structure with many different parts: pre-amps, saturators, exciters, DSP, power amps, x-over etc... However, the idea that a larger board will resonate more isn't really true. The heavier the panel, the less it will resonate at the end of the day (resistance to acceleration and harmonic dampening, all that fun physics stuff). The wires between panels on those hand wired amps fail way more often than most modern PCBs.
@dorzsboss
@dorzsboss 7 жыл бұрын
the bigger the panel the longer the wavelength and the bigger the amplitude can formed due to the less resonance attenuation. More small panel means more fixing point. The bigger amplitude what cases breaks in soldering. My experience shows that big panels always break soldering somewhere in time. The solution would be easy. they should fix the panel at more point. but it is unfortunately rare.

Whoa! I would'nt be using a pair of pliers for that job! A small spanner to remove the nut on the pots I think,without scratching the front panel!

I have a line 6 Flextone 2 that worked perfectly but one day I plugged in my guitar and the volume is a whisper. I can’t get schematics from line 6 so that’s no help. I’m a combat disabled vet and I just do t have money for a new/used or repair costs any ideas? I checked the common issues; burnt fuse: no, obvious shorts: no, loose disconnected wires/connections: no! Thanks I hope I can figure this out
