I'm an American living in Germany and to be honest, the drinking culture here is even more normalized, especially for the youth. They can buy beer and wine at 16 and hard liquor at 18, which is insane considering 16 is almost a decade before the brain is fully developed. They start as early as 14 or even younger. When I first moved here, I was 16 and hadn't touched alcohol and had no intention to, until I was gradually dragged into it by friends and classmates. Of course that spiralled over the years into problem drinking. It's just what everyone did--drink and party. Not to mention how normal it is here to drink beer everyday, and there's Oktoberfest which is the one of the biggest drinking celebrations in the world. I've enjoyed my time in Germany but as a recovered problem drinker, I am focused on leaving and moving to a more sober-friendly place. I feel so out of place here. I value my sobriety!

My sobriety journey has been dependent on being able to be surrounded by alcohol, and being able to resist it anyway. The liquor department in the grocery store fairly glitters and sparkles as you walk by! I think that you have to have an extra layer of resolve to stand up to a constant barrage of alcohol-related activity. I don’t know how many times I’ve told myself, “nope” since I stopped drinking because triggers are everywhere. Maybe the alcohol industry will eventually go the way of big tobacco when enough of its users realize it’s possible to quit drinking and live quite happily without it. But that is up to us… one at a time we make a difference in our own lives, but who knows? We, collectively, might eventually change something bigger.

They made Sue Ellen the “alcoholic,“ but really they should have all been hospitalized, based on how much the characters drank, lol. Larry Hagman, who played JR was getting drunk in real life, and ended up having to get a liver transplant, and at that point, he quit drinking and lived another few years. Anyway, when I was young and watching the show-which was one of the most popular shows in tv history -never realized how much they were promoting drinking.

Addiction is a psychological whirlwind.. it convinces you, you need your drug of choice to be functional. I.e. the first thing I do when I get drunk/high is clean my room, hit the gym, be overall productive and I’m convinced I can’t do these things unless I’m my “normal” which is under the influence. As a German/Irish Girl drinking is seen as part of my culture, the germans AND Irish are known for drinking… I think the normalization of alcohol on both sides of my families and the way the media represents drinking is SO dangerous, especially for teens. This is the time where you form Charakter and I wish SOMEBODY would have warned be back then. I needed someone to tell me 15 years later that my consumption was NOT normal but by then I was already a raging alcoholic…572 days sober today ❤

Also, now that I am sober, I noticed the placement for alcoholic beverages in the supermarkets here in Germany! So usually the alcohol is placed near the exit, so on your way out you often have to walk past the alcohol section. This used to trigger me A LOT but not anymore. Also when you‘re at the checkout, there are mini bottles of liquor right beside the chocolate or candy bars 😮 so you can just grab a bottle as casually as you would buy a snickers bar!

This is just so triggering, I mean this is where the little kids look at the sweets and ask their mom or dad for a treat and on the same shelf right beside the children‘s lollipops 😮 so in the end you would start to think.. alcohol can‘t be that bad right?
