In order to make sure that there are some sort of stakes involved and that players can’t just go through them with no consequence, most video games have some way of keeping track of the player character’s health which, unless you’re incredibly good, will deplete and fluctuate as play progresses. This means that titles have to also figure out some sort of way to restore the player’s health, at least if they have any hope of retaining their audience long enough that they’re able to make it to the end. No game is going to ever be fully accurate with how it portrays healing, as it would be a real pain to watch the protagonist sat in hospital for two months, so every option is going to be a bit weird compared to healthcare in real life, but for this list, we’re looking at the options that are weirder than most. I’m guessing shemp is a refrence to the character Shemp , from original 3Stooges bits . But just a geuss.

@@wanderlustwarrior Sam Raimi coined the term "Fake Shemp" in the credits of The Evil Dead to refer to the body doubles he had to use to finish the film after a ton of the cast had walked away from the project due to delays in filming. This in itself is a reference to Shemp from the 3 Stooges dying before completing the four film shorts they were required to deliver as part of their annual contract with Columbia Pictures. They ended up combining stock footage of Shemp that had already been filmed with new footage of Joe Palma as a body double for Shemp to complete the films. Now "Fake Shemp" is commonly used in the film world to refer to when a body double is needed for some reason or a other, like with Brandon Lee in the Crow, or Young Mark Hamill in The Mandalorian

It’s interesting how Shemp’s Cola (and beer) got its name. To make a long story short, they’re named after Shemp Howard, one of the original Three Stooges (and my personal favorite Stooge 😉).

Blood: a beating, bloody heart, often dropped by enemies. Sonic: rings (arguably) Zelda - Wind Waker / Twilight Princess: Chu jelly. Just look at WW Link's face when you force him to drink it. Not to mention the colored puff of smoke coming out of his mouth after he downs it in one gulp. Vampire: The Masquerade - Redemption: medieval flasks of blood that you carry around for weeks, unrefrigerated. By the time you'd drink it, you would have to scrape the congealed mass out of the vial. Cosmo's Cosmic Adventure: a rainbow-colored atomic core the size of Cosmo's head. Fable: Crunchy chick. It's crunchy because of the bones. And it's still alive when you eat it, based on the Evil points you get from doing so. Bioshock Infinite: You can get tonics to be able to eat rotten food. And you can find a "rotten potato" in a public toilet. Chances are, that ain't a potato.

I always liked the shakes you can make in the first Dead Rising game. Put milk and whiskey in a blender together, and it makes you run fast!

What about the visceral gibs you eat in Wolfenstein 3D? I think you have to have less than 10% health but I suppose at that point BJ is desperate for any sort of sustenance.

I used to play an MMORPG called Dream of Mirror Online where guano could be used to recover health. I avoided using it for that purpose because there were plenty of other health items in that game besides bat crap.

I'm not claiming that it's still a thing, but I swear I read years ago that dog food itself is actually taste tested by humans. Because it does have to be legally edible. Dogs themselves are much like humans in that they will eat pretty much anything if they're hungry. I'm sure this isn't the case for cat food. Because that has all manner of additives in it for cats specific dietary requirements. I do remember my grandad years ago having a small yorkie dog. And the dog wouldn't eat the lumps of kidney in the food. So as my grandad was putting the food out, he would pick out the kidney bits and munch them himself. Much to our amusement.

That was also in the original Rune game. But what I find strange in that game is that the tails of those lizards don't fall off when Ragnar grabs them to restore his health.
