I personally loved A Little Life, but you definitely have to be in the right headspace to read it. I‘d never recommend it to anyone because of all the triggers it includes, but I truly did enjoy it a lot even though it left me feeling like a heartbroken shell of the person I used to be hahaha

I know everyone loves it but I just have no desire to read a Little Life. I don't tend to read literary fiction anyways and I don't want something that sad

I'm so curious about what the "people who read Lolita vs. people who hated the Silent Patient" venn diagram looks like, because I got such strong Humbert Humbert vibes from a particular character that nothing was surprising. I can't stop talking about about how much I hated it, and I know I am very much in the minority. It also felt a little like You, which I watched but didn't read, and also hated. And ugh, Wilder Girls was just boring/annoying/gratuitously gross, and I feel like marketing it as a "queer, feminist Lord of the Flies" set it up for failure because I wanted it to both be much gayer and much more like Lord of the Flies.

I didn't really care for The Silent Patient either. I actually thought it was kind of predictable and yes, the main character was aweful.

Everyone seemed to like The Glass Hotel (Emily St John Mandel) and The Guest List (Lucy Foley) but I really did not like either of them. And I paid full price for The Glass Hotel hardcover bc I bought it from my local indie bookstore 😳 OMG, the heartbreak 💔😭

We have very similar tastes lol I also HATED the silent patient & wilder girls and have felt like the oddball out for it. Ugh and I forgot about the honey don't list but felt the EXACT same. Plus Eight Perfect Murders - I can't vibe with Peter Swanson. Like I said, same tastes hahaha

Thanks so much for the great words about A Little Life. I read it in March and couldn’t read anything else for a month cos it was so shite!! I hated it! Complete torture porn and it made me so angry. The way disability is used as a tool to make your cry as well was extremely problematic. Just overall so bad. Your videos are great! And can’t wait to watch your most loved books for this year! I’m a new subscriber for sure 🙌

the plot twist in the silent patient would've been better if the main character had been likeable or endearing AT ALL throughout the book. He was so vile and unlikeable that when the "big reveal" came it was just like oh, of course. because he's horrible. and he's been horrible throughout the entire book.

The Silent Patient is one of my worst of the year too! literally 80% of it is our narrator being told things he and we need to know, the characters all annoyed the heck out of me and I absolutely haaaaateeeed the plottwist (imagine me singing the last three words cause that‘s what I did in my head LMAO)
@kelliereviews53414 жыл бұрын
I agree with you Katie, The Silent Patient. It went on and on for me. Took me 5 months to read. Was thinking about re-reading it, see if I got a better opinion of it. First book from BTOM.
@KatieColson4 жыл бұрын
5 months? Kellie. Girl. Your patience and will power are stronger than I could EVER. BotM is always going to be hit or miss because they are new releases so there isn't a bunch of opinions floating around that you can reference on whether or not you will like them. I love BotM for when a favorite author of mine puts a book out through them. Cause then I can get it early sometimes.

Totally agree with you about A Little Life. Beautiful prose but... its just one sad thing after another. There is no point. The characters don't develop, its unbelievable and it carries a terrible mental health message. Its a shame cos she is a talented writer but there is no good reason to read this book.

Thank you so much Alena! I appreciate that so much and I loved hearing it. You made my day. You’re right. It isn’t that the book is horrible on its own. It’s that it is so disappointing compared to the amazing books before it. And YES the audios are phenomenal!!
