Zach Johnson, the “Millennial Farmer” is a 5th-generation farmer who’s spent his life growing, working, and learning on his family’s farm. His wit and dry sense of humor appeal to children and adults alike. A product of the millennial generation, his appreciation of new technology blends with his old-fashioned work ethic, and he offers a unique ability to deliver his message in a way that resonates with lifelong farmers as well as those with no knowledge of agriculture.
With growing consumer awareness about where their food comes from, Zach has identified the need for an independent voice from the front lines of agriculture. Zach actively promotes agriculture by sharing his day-to-day experiences in the agriculture world while providing farmer-to-farmer education to help facilitate a collaborative conversation between farmers and the public.

Much better with me and my grandpa. I learned some basic signals when operating a tractor with a bucket loader, or moving stuff around. A lot of times he would just frantically wave his hands, give up, come into the tractor and yell at me (I have hearing loss and a tractor isn't necessarily the easiest place to hear; he's cool though). I was 16 at the time. Although, to be fair, I did get the hang of it eventually!

Such a proud moment seeing Onyx in cart on his own at 10 yrs old. Remember that moment forever. I started my 12 yr old daughter in cart last year for the first time. Now she's handling it like a pro. Like you I was most nervous when he started loading trucks. Big excavators can nail a truck pretty easy. But he took his time and got use to the feel of the job and in no time was loading like a pro. I was about the same age when my uncle turned me loose with sickle bar mower on a Ford N8 (or something like it) and moving round bales into rows for a week in a big Deere with a cab, A/C and a radio and using the 3 point hitch bale fork. I was the happiest kid on earth. Your channel takes me back there for all the great memories AND more of how it works with way better angles than a kid can get from the cab. Super fun stuff.

I am sure you are proud of your son! / I can still remember when my dad put me on a Farmall H and a John Deere 10-foot grain drill in a 85 acre field in Virginia-1968 when I was 10 / Dad showed me where second gear was and road on the draw bar for three rounds to make sure my rows were straight / He also informed me to stay away from any rocks and no skips between the rows / He informed me that every one would see have good of a farmer we were because the field run along the main high way / My grandfather and younger brother had the wheat seed bags in the farm truck / They would back the farm truck up, dump the wheat seed bags into the drill and keep me planting / It took me four days to plant that field and that field of wheat turn out great / We had some great times on our dairy farm!

When I was 10 my dad turned me loose with a brand new Deere 4440 and a 220 centerfold disk. Probably before he got home in his pickup I had managed to snag the corner of an old hen house with the disk while turning around at the end of the field and pulled it down. The hen house had been eaten up enough by the termites and powder post beetles that it didn't damage the old man's disk at all and it collapsed in heap. The old widow lady who owned the rented 80 came out there and saw the pile of rubble and I climbed down out of the cab expecting her to be mad and she said: "I wanted to get rid of that old chicken house anyway if your daddy asks we will just tell him the wind blew it down." LOL

GET IT ONYX! Proud of you buddy. You remind me of myself over 30 years ago in rice fields in south Louisiana starting to drive a 4640 with a rayne grain 380 bushel cart. Our stuff was a bit smaller than what you're driving, the combines were a 6620 and 6600. At that time all that stuff looked big, we also had a Steiger Cougar 251. Prayers to Paw Paw and his new knee..

Good job Onyx! Farm kids just grow up doing things like this. I first helped on the farm when I was 4 years old. Dad would put the hay truck in granny gear and I would stand in the seat and steer the truck between bails to be loaded. By the time I was 10 I was cutting, raking, and bailing hay by myself. When things broke, I helped fix them. Later in life I was the head of department over around 40 technicians. All things being equal, I always hired a farm boy over someone who wasn't. They weren't always calling for help, they just got the job done. Farm kids just have a whole different outlook on life. It is good to see you carrying that on. Just remember that when he makes a mistake, even a costly one, don't chew him out. My dad would calmly explain what I had done wrong and what I should have done. That is how I learned.
