@@daledecker drugs and alcohol is definitely a very slippery slope and its easy to use too much or for the wrong reasons which creates huge problems in life you gotta face your problems face on. For anyone out there I have been through it and especially if you are a kid don't make it a daily habit or just a thing you do for fun have other real things to enjoy theres so many better things in life. You can do it! Its so worth it

Hi, my name is Alex, I'm from Mexico. I'm 16 and about a month ago I tried to kill mysefl by jumping from my balcony. My spine got fractures and I had to go through a lot a of pain until I went to segury. I don't have pain anymore but I still have to work on the things that wanted me to kill myself in the first place, and this is the video I needed. I can say u helped me, more that I can explain and I'm really thankfull. I'll be recovered in about 6 months and I'll land that tre flip one in for all. Thanks

Proud of you Dale, takes a strong character to be straight edge in this day and age. Substance abuse has become a normality to young people and to be someone who doesn’t engage in it is a rarity. Much love from New Zealand.

Dale Decker exactly and it’s completely the wrong way to go about things. People don’t realise that substance abuse is only a short term “solution” that ultimately makes the problems worse in the long run.

Yeah man similar situation to me too. I eventually "caved in", at about the age of 19. But as long as you have self-control, and you don't let anything, whether its drugs, video games, music, skateboarding, partying etc. get in the way of your ability to be responsible and accountable, you can succeed. It can be hard though, my dad has smoked pot his entire life practically and its why my parents are divorced. That is a lesson to learn from.

It's been almost 3 years since the last time I put a needle in my arm. It's always hard explaining to people why I don't party. It's hard for a lot of people to understand not having an off switch, or really really hating yourself and your life and just praying not to wake up to live another day with yourself. I'm just so thankful to not be where I was. I just pray to have a positive influence on people and do my best to be a responsible person and have fun skating. I appreciate you Dale.

Its rough man. And people think they can lump THC in with shooting up opiates and it just causes confusion. Weed and "real" drugs are two different worlds. Congrats on your clean time. I'm about 3 days off needle but before that it was 4 months. I don't know why I keep going back randomly, it destroyed my life for 10 yrs straight. I grew up skating with dudes like Malto and Torres and they succeeded and I went off the deep end with a silver spoon. Opiates are the devil man.

This was so inspiring. I'm 20 and have similar struggles with substances. I see a lot of parallels between our stories, especially the suicidal ideations and the burning of bridges. Being a Black kid from Brooklyn, not only was I going down a dark path, people just expected me to do that. In 11 days, I turn 21. Thanks to this video, I will also live my adult life sober. I don't miss the hangovers and have generally not been much of a drinker but I have been smoking weed daily for years. Now I have my first break up with my sweet Mary Jane. It feels alright. I do miss the nightsmoke before I go to bed, I have noticed without weed I have crazy dreams and bad temper sometimes. I am going to try to slow it down a bit but it's hard throw all shit that is going around in the world today. It's nice to get that fuck it in the system and relax. But good for you Dale, you found a good path, what ever that works good for you bro keep doing it.

Love this. I started skating at 41 because I was drinking more often because I had a little extra free time. I identified what I was doing after about 5 months of waisting time and money. So I started skating and there was no longer time to waist. Drinking was the activity. Now a beer is a beverage. I still have my beverage about once every 2 weeks. But it is no longer an activity. I don't watch many skateboard-related videos these days, but I couldn't help but click on this one as it seemed pertinent to my own experience. I'll try to keep this relatively brief: The most dismal point in my life was an eight-month period where I did not go a single day without drinking. Not only was it tremendously painful because my two biggest passions in life-writing and skateboarding-became secondary to my drinking, but, as you've mentioned about yourself in the video, I lost accountability for all aspects of my life. The scariest thing was how quiet and seamless it encroached on my life. I realized one day that I was beginning to feel empty and nihilistic, and I couldn't understand the feeling; then, on an unusually coherent day, I realized that I didn't go out skateboarding much anymore, and I had stopped writing any new short stories or essays. So, as it were, I was empty, because I wasn't doing the things that fulfilled me and gave my life meaning; I was only looking forward to the bottle of wine or pack of beer at the end of the workday. It's a terrifying realization to have, but I'd say what's even more terrifying is to have that same realization ten or twenty years older.

here in the Netherlands people literally always look at me weird when i say i dont drink or do drugs even tho im of age, i always tell them that i dont need it to be happy. a lot of people who i say that to look at me weirder after i tell em that, thanks for making this video

ted van der voort I mean that’s cool for you dude, but it’s not like everyone who takes drugs “needs it to be happy,” a lot of people drink and smoke weed cause it’s fun. It’s like if someone told me they never listen to music because they “don’t need it to be happy.”

It took me a long time to realize I don’t need to get wasted to feel good about myself. I spent a long time partying and looking back it was really not so cool after all. Being sober is amazing and every day feels like a gift after all the sorrow and misery once the drunk wears off

Sup man hope you're doing well how ya been? I'm struggling on and off with weed, but it's getting a lot more tolerable and better. I'm 22 and been trying to be sober during the day and only smoke a bowl at night. I used to smoke eighth in 3 days, now I can make em last 3 months. Hopefully soon I'll be good and not smoke at all!

I've been smoking weed everyday for 14 years. I've taken 2 short breaks (only a month both times) it felt great. I was more energetic, I slept better, I was more outgoing, I remembered more and was sharper off the cuff, I was more outgoing and not so clamed up. I constantly think about quitting, I want to stop. I Hope I'll be telling a story like yours one day. Cheers bro.

I grew up with an alcoholic father that I got to see become sober in front of my eyes and it made me decide that I want to be sober my entire life, I’m 18 right now and sometimes feel like an outsider because of my decision, watching all the other kids my age party and drink sometimes make me feel left out. Anyway thanks for this video, and congrats on 10 years sober!

I've always said to my self, do everything in moderation. Because I'd hate to do something so much I can't/don't want to do it again. I have sympathy for people who struggle with ideas like that. Props to every one who is working through their vices, whatever they might be.

dale, what's the purpose, why shouldn't I just end it all. The world will keep turning, sure a few people will be sad but those are just a few people on a giant planet in a giant solar system in a giant galaxy in a giant universe, nothing matters so if all of a sudden im gone forever then the only thing that will happen is I stop suffering. If the majority of my life is making me suffer and feel hopeless then why am I still living it. Boom, in a second everything is gone and I don't have to suffer anymore. But why every time that ive tried has It failed and why is there always this little voice telling me not too. Do I hate myself that much that I want myself to suffer, I just don't see the point. And I would rather live knowing that I should be alive and that there is a reason for all my suffering than to die not knowing why I was ever alive in the first place.

This was really moving... sometimes when you witness people behaving really heartlessly, acting manipulative or cruel, it's hard to imagine how that person's perspective could ever change; and that's one of the hardest parts of dealing w/ the consequences of that behavior. But we underestimate our own capacity for growth. In a few years that person could have a totally different mindset, esp. if they decide to do something as powerful as sobriety

Hey Dale, thanks for putting out support to all those people who struggle with substance abuse. I recently turned 18 and am trying my best to quit my habit of smoking weed. It’s so easy to tell yourself you’ve got it under control and it isn’t a problem but for me it got to the point where I was high from the moment I woke up to the time I fell asleep. Seeing this though has given me courage to find a happier and more successful life for myself through sobriety

Respect. Happy you see your personals issues as an individual human being, rather than taking on the worlds problems, or blaming the substances for your own issues. A lot of people struggle with this, they see others doing similar things as you but coming out unscathed. Its hard to realize you are the problem, and you are the only one that can fix it.

i really love the fact you have publically talked about this. in skateboarding people dont necessarily outwardly express their problems because they may think its "un-cool" but its so sick to show other people that they can verbilise it without seeming like a "pussy".
