As a diver with a number of certifications, including wreck and Nitrox, I’ve been inside wrecks where there were skeletal remains. I have never been inside a wreck like this, with many newly-dead victims. If most of these divers had little training or experience in such recovery dives, I cannot imagine how traumatic this must have been. Add the debris, tangled wiring, etc., and a ship resting on its side, and I just bow in admiration for their courage. Such a sad tragedy.

Hi Alan. Thanks for watching. It was very different from a normal wreck dive. It was a newly sunken large ship. Full of wires, mattresses, chairs, tables etc. In many ways, a guideline wasn’t needed because all the signages were intact so you can move along the ship without one. It’s only if you get really disoriented where it would help. I think the majority of the divers didn’t have experience in retrieving bodies before this happened. I know of only one who I know had experience in body retrieval. I wonder how the ship looks now. It’s in a high traffic area so I know people aren’t allowed to dive there. The current is also strong so you can only dive it during slack tide. What struck me was the amount of silt that accumulated in just a few days and weeks. I’m sure the ship isn’t an easy dive now. Hi Charles. Yes, the dives were done just to bring the victims home. It was one of the most traumatic things. Maybe the most traumatic thing I’ve ever done in my life but maybe the most satisfying as well knowing the surviving families would have their loved one be found. I agree 100%! I don't know if you've lost anyone in one of these horrible incidents. But, it is simply the worst. I am shocked that the Philippines hadn't done more or trained more divers after the sinking of the MV Princess Of The Stars in June of 2008! The massive loss of life that day should have been a wake up call! 814 dead and missing. Only 56 people survived. They believe more People were on board. But this was how many could be verified.

Yes, that can be done. But the problem is the shipping company that buys the new, safer ship sales this one that sank for whatever they can get out of it. And then a smaller company buys it operates it, possibly unsafely and bingo were on here leaving comments and replies.

New ships are for very rich companies who are willing to put the expense of something like a break away cabin into the bill of an already big purchase of a brand-new ship. Most companies just want what is necessary and saving lives in the small chance that it sinks are not in the budget nor concern for the people who own them and are safe on land.

The guy who made this video did an amazing job. The narrative along with the description notes while they were diving truly let you feel the experience maybe not to it’s entirety but enough that you could get a glimpse of what they lived through. First off, thank you. Thank you for telling the story for the many victims that were trapped & lost within that senseless accident. The video was not only full of information on your dive & what was going on within the vid for us uninformed, but you shared a bit of how your own (plus other divers’) mental health was affected. That is huge. I don’t think I would’ve been able to ‘get over it’ (shitty term) at all, in complete honesty. But that would happen if I ever dived. I have great respect for the bravery & tenacity of rescue divers. I grew up & (after about 15yrs of theatrical touring) currently live on the Central East coast of Florida. I grew up on the beach & during sea turtle nesting season (May 1st to Oct 31st) spent many days & nights on the sand and in the water. My aunt, a biology prof, conservationist, & eventually mayor of the beachside town she lived in, made my love for the Flora & fauna of my state & community grow exponentially. Now, saying all that, at some point in my early to late teens, I became terrified of the ocean. Actually, deep water in general I suppose. It could be the crystal clear water of Carribean islands where you could see starfish wandering around, and if I’m dumped in I have an immediate panic attack. I’ve also been told on several occasions that I actually walk on water. If others are dumped in with me? They take 2nd place in my lizard brain. I only check on them once I’m out of the water. I don’t know why or how this phobia appeared when I swam happily in the ocean for years. Seven species of sharks off our shore & I live in the #9 most shark infested waters in the world - that doesn’t bother me. Well ... bull sharks make me nervous but you can get chomped by them in the River - rarely. Been stung by jellyfish, bit by crabs, no issue. So yeah, I admire divers greatly! Fresh, ocean, cave, etc. Y’all are badass explorers of things yet to be learned & discovered plus rescue - or retrieve - those missing. Again, thank you for sharing.

Have you ever gotten a really bad inner ear infection?? Tubes? Mastoid surgery at all?? Similar happened to me. Only mine was heights. I loved heights. In fact he dad promised to take me skydiving. We were supposed to go my 18th, then it was my 21st. Then he was gone for good and I'll never have that chance. He broke EVERY promise he ever made. He's in jail. Reason I'm telling you, only reason .. don't feel bad at all. Zero. He isn't dead. Anyways. I got on the sky coaster. Closest I could get to skydiving. It was like 200-250 foot drop. You swung though instead of dropping. Every year would go to a giant amusement park. One with the big coasters. Well. In my 20s I got a HORRIBLE inner ear infection. Dr didn't take seriously. Well it stopped hurting and nothing was said. A year later I got another and this time a migraine and other issues. It was a mastoid infection. Almost unheard of in the states these days. It was so far gone they had to go in and shave out the bones and everything. The original infection ate up my ear drum and ear canal. They had to rebuild all that as well. All the nerve damage was why it wasn't really hurting. That's from years and years of infection. The ENT thinks that one was brewing at least 3 years. After the surgery and healing up. Life went on as normal. The next summer. A year after surgery. We went to Kings Island. They got this part scale Eiffel Tower. I always loved that view. It was fall so in was so excited. We went clear to the top. I took one step out and I could FEEL the height. And NOW there was a PULL. like a vortex trying to suck me down. I really felt as if my feet was being pulled. I immediately panicked and grabbed the wall. My boyfriend just kept on walking. He's clueless this just happened. It took the breath from me. It isn't like in the movies with a big * GASP!! It literally sucks the wind from your lungs and they deflate like balloons. No sound!! When he finally turned around the look on his face was priceless. He thought I was joking around. In fact he even yelled at me because it was embarrassing. Only a few ppl really seen. But ppl were starting to ask what was going on. I can't answer. He had no idea. I'm clinging to the wall crying hysterically now. Full blown panic attack!! I thought I was dying!! Gabriel done tooted that horn!! It's a 15 min elevator ride to the top. Meaning it's a 15 min ride back down. One trolly!! I was stuck up on that damn thing until the cart come back!! I was finally able to scream out what the issue was. He kinda guessed after a few. But it was shocking. I wasn't THAT person. When I got on the ground and you my bearings back. I thought I'd try it again. To see if it was a fluke. Something was off- for SURE. BUT- it would be something much faster and I wouldn't be stuck at the top of anything again. But oh was I wrong. Boyfriend wanted the tower of terror. They take you up like 150 foot and drop you. I agreed You are not up TOO long. About 2 min before they drop you. Up to 5 min to get to the top. 2 min view then 💥 you drop. Yeah. - I seen Jesus!! My soul left my FUCKING BODY!! I couldn't even use my legs when I got off the thing. We were able to find out I can do coasters and things that move fast and not in the air too high, too long. My best is about 100. Lol But I break a sweat stepping up on a kitchen chair!! Holy shit! They only thing that ever changed was that Surg. I asked Doc the next time I seen him and he hold me absolutely that's why. The inner ear handles all the balance. Even just having too much or too little fluid can cause you to weeble and wobble or be off balance. It changes the way you FEEL gravity. I can actually feel it now. Hard to explain. But the higher up I get, the heavier I feel. I feel like lead in me pulling me down. I have acclimated to that pretty good. Especially when I had to move to the 6th floor in a historical building. I can feel your high up I am. Even when I'm laying down. I can feel the building sway and move. Even just a little. But heights scare the crap out of me now. My entire life changed from that surgery. Something you wouldn't think would cause a fear and a feeling and sensation to set in... But it did. So maybe yours is something similar. How are you with dark rooms and sleep?

As both my uncles one being a navel diver the other a police diver I also work as a recovery/retrieval diver. One of the most difficult operations is that of a plane, boat or any other vehicle in the water because of the unforeseen dangers everywhere around you which makes the operation so much more time consuming and exhausting for all involved.

I don't know what to say... I've been in cold dark water in a guarry once, about 70 feet deep looking at a phone booth and a two seat plane that were put there for recreational divers to look at. The cold and the dark were scary enough... I can't even imagine what you men went through, and continue to go through... You are the bravest of the brave... I disagree with it not being for public viewing. It is not for entertainment but for reminding us of our mortality and that we need to be mindful of what can happen to any of us. To hide or censor such from public viewing is to minimize and marginalize the lost and the survivors, as well as the efforts made by people to bring closure to these tragedies. We cannot hide from these encounters and act like the world is some rosy pretty place with pink fluffy unicorns dancing on rainbows. By all means we can respect the dead and the survivors and the family, but it is best to do this by sharing with the world what they have experienced. Hiding what happened is a greater insult to all involved. Besides, that is what warnings like Viewers Discretion are for.

This is why I will never go on a ship. I'm almost 24 and have never even been on a boat that's on water. I've only kayaked or canoed in less than 5 feet of water and once rode with a friend across a frozen lake to get to their house much faster. As soon as you mentioned how many children were on board and that most died, I started crying. I can't imagine to think what and if the serving parents/ family members thought or did because of losing a loved one so small and innocent. Being a first responder or a recovery team is a very hard job to do the sights you see are traumatic and even though you don't know them you end up thinking how their life was too short and where they might be today if they were still alive. It's a job no one wants to do, but it has to be done for their loved ones. Thank you to everyone who helped rescue the survivors, those who brought the victims home, those who helped the families during their time of grief, and those who risked their lives to bring someone's loved one(s) home. I pray everyone involved heals both physically and mentally. I pray the victims have found peace, and their spirits are with their loved ones and not trapped in the ship. Thank you for posting this to let people know what it looked like firsthand, and thank you for showing respect to the victims.

Just watching the video with no sound just music in the background was such a wonderful tribute to these fallen people their families I am sure put forth feelings that no one else knows for the courage and strength it took to recover the ones you got. In times like these it makes us realize that as human beings with a soul and a heart are more than generous they are kind open-hearted and willing to subject themselves to something so tragic as this. Hi Courtney. Our main goal was just to bring the victims home. Some of the divers I was with did dives for over a month. If I’m not mistaken some did daily dives during that tim frame. Everyone did this in a voluntary capacity and only a few were military or coast guard. The rest of us were civilians. Thanks for watching.

​@@okurr191I know Julia Child was commissioned by the OSS to design a shark repellent for the survivors of plane crashes in the Pacific ocean during WW2 as they kept getting attacked and killed. More deaths due to shark attacks than the actual crashes themselves. Sorry, I know this is an old thread but I've only just come across this video. While I've had the unfortunate luck of finding several dead people (in different stages of decomposition and no, it wasn't my job. It were relatives and one stranger), I can never imagine what's like to find corpses inside of shipwreck. Especially one so recent at the time of the diving. Anyone who goes in dives like these, to recover the deceased bodies have my entire admiration! I hope that your mental health and that of the other divers are recovering.

Entirely seperate of the victims remains, I find ship wrecks both incredibly sad and also quite frightening. There is something about the way they loom out of the water like phantoms of themselves. It makes the hair stand up on the back of my neck. I have to applaud your courage for going down there to recover the lost souls trapped in the ship.

It always amazes me that people take the effort and risk to retrieve bodies from water disasters. I know it brings closure to the families involved, and I'm sure the underwater footage helps with the investigations

@@bossman6263 so let's say you're in a passenger compartment two or three levels down eating suddenly there's an impact everybody's looking at each other like oh shit then within a minute generators go out lights go off now you have to find yourself out of an unfamiliar place in the dark while the ship is listing sideways any world class Olympic swimmer can be killed in a tragedy such as this find your way out the ship three levels down in the dark saying they should learn to swim you realize how stupid and disrespectful that is I hope I'm not trying to start a fight or argument here I'm just saying you should have a little respect and think about yourself being in that disorienting situation yourself with hundreds of people thrashing about trying to find a way out of a ship that is quickly feeling with water & in the dark..... God bless these brave men for their service and God bless the people men women and infants and children lost in this horrible tragedy

This was very surreal to watch and I have a new found respect much bigger than before to you and your team and all other rescue divers. I never fully understood the magnitude of a recovery dive. You all do amazing work and should be recognized more than you are. That’s why I am thankful for you releasing this video and allowing us to see and understand more about this important and much needed profession. A coworker told me ...just don't look them in the eyes and you will be fine...yet I still think about some of the people we pulled out of the water ... One in particular will be with me for the rest of my life.

Hi. Yeah, I think the divers were all quite well experienced. We did lack the proper equipment though. People tend to forget many of us were called out of the blue to join in the dive. 90% of the divers we not professional or commercial divers. There were very few who ended up diving since many experienced divers didn’t want to deal w bodies. For me, I did my first dive with new equipment w zero dives. There was a typhoon and all my equipment was w the dive shop being serviced. I had to buy all new equipment and I had to figure out balance and all that during the descent. The key to these dives is balance, buoyancy control, situational awareness, lots of things are going on during the dive. Actually this footage has been edited since I didn’t want to put video of whole bodies out of respect to the victims and their families. It’s just good to give people a sense of what was there and what the divers were up to. Thanks again for watching.

Thank you for all the information. I learned a lot. I imagine the families are so grateful people volunteered to do this. I have never dived so this is not in my wheel house but if something happened on land that they needed volunteers for I'd immediately go. With a vast respect for human remains I would feel more reverence dealing with bodies than most people. I imagine this was both very emotionally and spiritually impactfull. Yep. I forgot the name but its a bunch of korean student that passed away because the cruise sink. Happened in korea. I heard one of the diver suicide because he cant forget the moment he swim into a room full of student body

If only Korea had accepted the help of the Japanese and USA navy that were nearby at the time of the incident, perhaps many more lives could have been saved.

I can't help wondering if the container ship/freighter hadn't pulled away, the ferry would have stayed afloat stuck onto the freighter, at least until help from other ships or helicopters could arrive? To wit: (1) Literally, as of this time it still says "100+ Body Retrieval..."; (2) Video footage subsequent written-sub captions narrating his/their experiences; & (3) The Author claimed it to be the "uncensored" full video version of said activity taken years ago, which he just released recently. Anyways, you can review all 3 abovementioned proof, which does not actually requires interpretation based on implications, since it is expressly written all over. Nevertheless, as I said I felt relieved to see none, this, out of respect to the victims.

I'm 57 and wanted to be a SAT diver when i was younger, but at 20 had an accident (not diving), that meant i couldn't, i couldn't imagine doing what these guys had to do, going in to that ship to search and be confronted with bodies floating, which they then had to carefully extract, i am not suprised they suffered PTSD after, MASSIVE respect to these guys and sincere condolences to all those who lost their lives or a loved one RIP

While I am glad I did not have to see a body retrieved in this video despite my morbid curiosity, I am still curious as to how they are recovered. Are they simply pulled free and in their boated state simply allowed to float to the surface for recovery, or are flotation bladders attaches, are they swam to the surface? I feel for the families, and have no doubt the recovery touches everyone involved and do not want to seem callous, but I am curious as to the procedure.

I think it's natural to wonder. It truly depends on many, many things. I can tell you what I know from being a US military brat. And from the experience we had due today the loss of a dear friend. He lost almost his entire family in a capsized ship in the Philippines in 2008. Costing the lives of 814 people. Often, the bodies are not recoverable. It depends on the temperature of the water, depth of the water, salinity of the water, and resources to just name a fewetc ... But most often, the bodies are put in bags, then bouncy ( air floats) are attached and they are floated up a guide line. I hope this helps. 💕🙏🇺🇸

I have to thank you from the bottom of my heart! Watching this was very difficult for me. It took me a bit to gather my thoughts to make this comment. I simply can not understand how the Philippines did not have trained divers to retrieve these poor lost souls! You see, a dear friend of ours lost most of his family( brothers, sisters, their children etc.. ) in the sinking of the MV Princess Of The Stars in June of 2008. They were among the 814 lost that day. They believe there could have been more that were not on the passenger manifest. Only 56 people survived that ship. He, his brother and family live here in the US. And we were with them in the days following. Waiting, for any news. The recovery efforts were certainly lacking then. And it is horrible to think that they hadn't trained their Coast Guard in the years that followed. It's unconscionable to me that they would neglect this in their training. Again, I thank you and your fellow divers for all you've done. I'm sorry that you had to experience this. As I am sure it has been very difficult to process this much loss of life. I am absolutly certain that it has given the families a great deal of closure that they would not have had otherwise. It is very difficult to process loss. But even more difficult, when you don't have that person to hold a proper funeral and burial. I hope you are in a better place mentally. And I hope this in some way can show how important what you've done is to these families. God Bless you and your fellow divers. 💕🙏🇺🇸
