Fun fact, crushed glass aggregate is basically literal sand. Glass is made from crushed lime stone, soda ash, & you guessed it sand. It's not dangerous like shards of broken glass can be.

There is a spray that you can use to make Griptape like this that Aaron is talking about. It’s called ( stone affect spray paint ) i’ve used this multiple times to put grip on metal staircases so it should do it exactly the same thing on the skateboard. Just remember to sign the surface 1st to give it a something grip too!

I have Lucid glow grip on my Hamboard for barefoot surf skating! :) It is definitely easier on my barefeet than regular griptape. The glow grip is SO cool. But you definitely don't need a thick layer. On my pescadito board, I only used maybe a third of the shaker bottle for the entire 5ft tall board. When it is used for it's actual purpose, its awesome stuff.

Normal sandpaper such as you'd use for wood is paper coated in crushed glass (sometimes called glass paper). I think grip tape is more similar to wet/dry sandpaper which is coated in a crushed grey/black mineral called emery which is harder than glass

Pretty sure you weren't supposed to let the first spray layer dry completely before the top coat went on. You want the top spray layer to bond with the bottom layer, kind of like contact cement, and trap the pieces of grit in-between.

Yeah I just watched the instructions myself. Definitely seems like user error to me lol. It said to use a nice even coat of glue and when applying the glass grip to start off the board before moving the bottle over it and at a high height, the guy said he even puts the board on the ground and fully stands up before tapping the bottle on the side so it spreads out more. Also seems from the video, less is more, to prevent clumping. In your video, its also rainy and that could prevent the glue from drying within an hour, maybe 2-3 hours if its raining would be better? A revisit with other grip like sand, glitter, beads, crafts cotton ball things or something like that might be fun to try out compared to the glass it comes with.

He also said to make sure to clean the spray bottle if needed (if its not coming out in a misty form) using a warm class of water and pumping the water threw the sprayer and scraping the spraying part if there's and build up.

the thing that does not make sense to me is how adhesive can bond to a smooth surface. Wouldn't you need to sand down the top of the board for it to stick correctly?

Not necessarily. Primer is specifically used on smooth, slick surfaces.

Use a piece of grip tape/sandpaper to scuff up the top of the board, it could be that it can't adhere to the slick surface you have on the board. IDK though =D

I have a board that came with spray on grip tape and it was just a very fine layer of "salt" evenly coated across the board 😅 Works pretty well I find and I had a friend try it who's been skateboarding for 15 years and he said it isn't too bad. it does wear off and need re-applying, but I quite like it honestly. I think a combination of way too much "salt" and a cold day made this difficult. I feel like the heat gun may have just sealed the top layer quicker rather than drying the adhesive all the way through, making it slippery when pressure was applied 🤔 Not going to lie, I've been looking for reviews on spray on grip tape and was really hoping for an honest review and proper try of actual spray on grip tape after the DIY episode, but I guess I shouldn't be surprised with how this went with all I've seen at Braille so far >< But 10/10 for entertainment at least 😅

I think most products just wont stick to a lacquered skateboard. You need to at least key the board by sanding or something. You should try straight texture paint or texture coating. Sand and prime the board first, then with a roller, roll the texture on top.

You spray the adhesive on the board and spread it around. Then you spinkle the grip on it, cover it well. Then you spray the adhesive over it again and let it dry.

Honestly I kinda love these videos where they just completely screw up the gimmick (or at least where things fall apart, this stuff probably is terrible regardless of user error but not watching the instructions first definitely didn't help), it's the closest thing to official vlog content we get on a semi-regular basis since the setup footage ends up so much longer than the skating. That being said, if they want to give this another shot one idea to avoid making the same video twice would be to turn it into a gimmick game of skate where 2-3 people each have to spray their own grip beforehand. That way we get even more examples to conclude how bad the product is and it adds an extra twist to the competition similar to the games with bad boards except you're partially to blame for your own board turning out bad.

Use iodized salt, large sea salt, and spray paint clear coat. Spray 1 coat of clear, salt, and another layer of clear coat. My longboard is 10”x58” 😅

Just spray 3m adhesive and get sand blasting sand ( fine grit ) . Way better then that stuff and you can do like 100 boards with one setup, the Sand is called Black Beauty sandblasting sand , it’s literally grip sand

Yea that's a great idea. Give inhalants to misfit skaters across the globe. Where is that spary on grip? Daddy needs a whiff! The more wet and cold it is is worse for application of stuff like this. It might cure weird. Not saying it did and try again as chances are are it will be the same. But something to think about. Now seeing more of the video it didn't dry because of the weather. Warm dry days are better for stuff like that.

So I have an uncle who bought a product similar to this to put a grippy surface on steps and running boards of a work truck, it has lasted for about 6 years now with zero issue. You definitely didn't do the glue application correctly, most likely way too thick and you used way too much of the glass medium / sand. Definitely the user error in this situation. You should really buy another batch of it and actually try to do a proper application, you may be surprised at how tough and reliable it can be if done correctly. Another mistake done was doing it while it was raining and with the air moisture levels near 100%. That makes the glue not dry properly and the glass not want to stick to it. The heat gun afterwards definitely didn't help either. I would let the product dry completely for at least 24 hours before attempting to handle or touch it 👍
