As a knife collector of 25 years... I'm fully entitled to calling you an absolute fool for spending $1,000 for a production knife. Even moreso for defending that purchase on the merit of the handiwork that went into it. For $1,000 you can get a knife built from the ground up to your specifications from some of the best knife makers in the world. Edit: geez YT is unreliable. This is the first notification I have received on this comment and I am currently at 2 months, 3.1k likes, and 59 comments later. 🤣 I have collected for 25 years, that's since I was a kid, I'm no bladesmith or old codger. I, too, like anyone who collects to collect and not to resell, have plenty of dumb knives tucked away in the collection... and plenty are damascus just because the first nice knife my dad bought me as a kid was damascus. That said, if you want a really nice knife that is stupid sharp, retains an edge, and is smooth as butter without a spring assist, check out Civivi and Kizer. You can find knives from both that meet high production quality standards at $60-$120 all day. Also, I was a bit of an ass here... and I wish I had been more sensitive. I don't know why this guy bought this knife... and it may have been his dream to have one from this line. Try to remember, at least for people carrying lower end knives, that everyone starts somewhere, everyone is inspired by different goals, and you never know what knife someone's granddad gave them as a kid. I'm definitely gonna make an effort to be less judgmental. Thanks again, folks. This is cool. :)

The acid eats the different steels at different rates making one appear darker than the other showing lines and patterns the material is know for. I rather go with factory graded instead of hand ground.
@aruugalaedc2 жыл бұрын
Well, hand ground blades are actually like profiled by hand. So like, the maker starts with a chunk of steel. They CNC the extra bits away and the more precision areas, like lock faces, pivot, stop pin faces, so on. After that, the maker takes the blank to a grinder and grinds the blade by hand to give it it's blade shape and it's geometry (basically, how thick it is behind the edge). However, this guy using it as a flex in his videos... Eh. It's not that special. You can get a blade reground by hand from various makers, ranging from like $60-$whatever.

"Cut about thirty boxes and it'll go dull" "But this one is gonna last a lifetime!" First off, that's why I have a whetstone and a set of diamond sharpening stones in various grits. Combo was about $12 and they're serviceable. Second off, there are exactly ten things that will NEVER lose their edge: six are in Wolverine's hands, four are in his daughter's (or did she have one claw per? I never got that far but the joke stands). It doesn't matter how much you overpaid, if it ain't fantasy, you'll need it sharpened. Basic blade maintenance. Third, my dad made knives and swords professionally for eleven years and as a hobby for a few decades. I know what damascus looks like and how it behaves. He hates making it because it's a bitch, but he makes a really pretty feather damascus, and several KZbinrs also make really cool organic damascus. It's a bitch to make, yeah, but it's also only special because it looks neat. It adds NOTHING to edge retension, and unless you've hotdogged some kind of hcs into the damascus, it may HARM the edge retension because it's made of at minimum, TWO KINDS OF STEEL, with different hardnesses. Maybe it's lighting, but the light spots in that blade look set-in, like they're engraved, rather than being flush the way a normal acid wash leaves it. And the pattern isn't great either, though that may be because the blade is too small for any pattern to be appreciated properly. As for "hand ground"... My guy, if you're leaving the factory edge on a cheap knife then bitching about it, that's a you problem. You're SUPPOSED TO SHARPEN IT YOURSELF. The factory edge is a guideline. It's a functional, but unfinished, product. "Hand ground" just means they took a bit of time to properly finish the edge. Last, I've opened boxes with a small jawbone because my school banned knives (rural area with a lot of bluecollar workers so most students over 15 had knives for work). An unmaintained factory edge isn't gonna stop shit for busting up boxes. You just need a point to puncture with, then rip the tape. Side note? $1000 for a switch? I've seen quality swords that cost less! Jesus fuck dude way to tell everyone you either have more free cash than good sense or are at least mildly irresponsible with money. The ONLY reason I'd avoid that $30 switch is because nickel makes my skin break out and pot metal usually has some nickel %. Having a visible rash breakout looks bad to any customers you could interact with at work. I'll stick to Case. Their cheapo blades are wicked and the scales from their folders have never given me a problem.

I got a SUPER deal on a Microtech just 2 days after buying $25-$35 Chinese knockoffs. The UTX 85 is beautiful, featherlight and feels like it’s made of unobtanium, fragile as glass. Within 3 days it was malfunctioning. I hadn’t cut anything but paper with it and I couldn’t get it serviced because of the start of the pandemic. One of the full sized knockoffs lasted me through the end of summer with regular abuse. The third lasted until about 2 weeks ago. That’s just over 3 years of drops, bangs, hammering, eating off it, cutting various cords (including amsteel, which I wouldn’t recommend) plastic, prying small lids and magnets, it’s been great. I genuinely wish I’d spent the $200+ I spent on the microtech and bought 8 of the knockoff

I will never pay more than 300 for a knife only for quality purposes and for use. Knives can be made to last and they were made to be RE- sharpened. For instance, buy a pocket knife that has replacement blades. Carry two extra for camping but just resharpen the primary blade if not in heavy use. What cost you 30 bucks saved you many dollars down many years. Also, I'll pay more for whetstones than I would a knife

@taconachoz37532 жыл бұрын
Damascus steel has no affect on the actual quality of the blades edge. It’s strictly for appearance and depending on the metals used for the Damascus it can make the blade heavier. Damascus is not what makes the blade nice. Normally that comes from a proper hardening and tempering cycle. However it does have a stunning quality look and will impress anyone depending on what technique was used to fold it.
