Another option is jacking the garage. We did one last fall for a buddy. 4 guys and 8 bottle jacks. Unbolted from the foundation and slowly jacked and blocked along the way. We jacked it one garage door panel higher and built a little wall around to bridge the gap

A bunch of 4x4 guys I know have tried that gusseting trick with the trailing arms. They all found out the hard way that the arms are supposed to flex a little by design. If you box it in, all of the stress gets focused at the ends of the arm, and it will cause fatigue, and cracks near the bushings, or mounting points. You might be fine on something street driven, but I thought it worth mentioning.

That car just does something to me. There's just a great "no bullshit" attitude there, and I'm really glad to see that you stuck with it. Now the finish line is in sight. I mentioned once before that one of my dad's friends was an Atlanta P.D. homicide detective, and his undercover ride was one of these in a dark brown. It had the big block, same steels and dog dishes. The guy was a WW2 Vet, and the kids all looked up to him because he was kind of a hero. I think this car is triggering some happy stuff in the back of my brain. That must be why I'm digging it so much. Anyway, you've done a fine job, you overcame some tough problems, and you have ended up with this result. Very nicely done! You win a cee-gar! .

I like the scissor lift, amazing what else you will find with it up in the air, bad suspension bushings, bent trailing arms. I have the same issue of low ceiling in my shop, the Jenga idea sounds pretty good for blocking it in the air with the lift out.

I had one of those my lifts at work for years as my second lift and I found it handy I used it with a set of 30 inch tall wheel alignment stands to do alignments as well as to get the lift out of my way if I wanted under chassis access. Additionally I would move the wheel alignment stands to the front and back of the vehicle and set jackstands on the stands and placed the jacks stands under the frame horns to steady the lift although once I learned to better balance the car front to rear on the lift that was not such an issue. Lastly I learned to do a lot of work sitting on. Mechanic’s roll around chair which I had one that was vey short (apx 12” off the ground and another that was apx 22” of the ground additionally I put a low shel on my tool cart to make life more convenient. I personally hate working of a creeper or laying on concrete so this type of lift was a definite bonus in what had been my flat stall at work.

Somewhat of a simple solution to not building the Jenga wheel blocks. As most of us gearheads have an assortment of old Wheels laying around you could always weld a couple of them together to get your different heights works pretty good. I cut up some scrap wood that I had to lay on top of where the lug nuts would go on those Wheels to leave a little bit flatter surface for the tires or the brake drums in fact to sit on. Love the videos. Keep them coming. But remember real life always comes first KZbin can sit in the backseat.

Nothing better than playing with the new toys, there will always be someone who can have better or do better, I recon it would be dam sight better than working on the FN floor, the stands are a great idea, I used to use a two post and constantly worried about it tipping off, then taking tank's out or motors, them stands would have been helpful, enjoy your new toy, they are just envious, or rich, all the best to yous and your loved ones

Good investment on the scissor jacks. Your just starting to reach the age where it becomes harder to work in those conditions as your getting older. The only down side to those Jenga wheel stands is the price of lumber is still insane. That lift is awesome. I could use one right now to do a rear end swap on a Catalina and a front clip a Falcon. I used to have to R&R transmissions out of any RWD anything that came through the door under a Pneumatic-hydraulic Single Post Car Lift that leaked air and was sketch AF. Made me nervous enough to go back to motorcycles and scissor lifts not much of a smaller foot print than yours. Now we'll be able to see all the rotten floors from the bottom before you cut them out. 😁

The cribs will be handy, i would suggest a little taller than where you would use axle stands. Lots of room for shop crane legs. The trailing arm, a block inside and a press to squish it then weld the plate as you mentioned. But, sectioning it out saves the hassle of dealing with the bolts. That scissor lift will save you a ton of time, just in crawling in and out. A winch up on the wall,or a fairlead to drag it up to store lift out of the way.

Just got to have it centered on it really well and you will be good. Beginning of my auto career I worked on some really crude lifts. We used those in the mid 2000's for tires and maybe the brakes on occasion. Always Dan make sure that you have supports with the side that you are on or all 4 corners. They are not seen much for the reason of what you described, and just think about your wife Dani! She would not have you around to enjoy the life that we all enjoy, exactly what you are doing! Making a cool ride for what you have to work on at the time.

On your trailing arms, later you might want to replace those bushings. In the video they do look dry rotted. Once you start driving it more, they might start to crumble and get slopy. Nice lift! I have had one of those for years and still use it occasionally, even though I also have a 2 post lift. It's great for suspension work and body work. I think I may have the exact same model as yours as it looks identical except for color - mine is blue. You have to be careful of stability, because they can be pretty unstable if you are reefing hard on something, but only side to side it seams. f you are going to do that, put the big trailer screw jacks on opposite corners which will really stabilize it. I have some pretty big ones I use. I also use them for removing bodies from frames, but you have to have 4 of them. Lift the entire car using the frame, put the screw jacks under the body, drop the frame out from under it and roll away.

You ever put a quad cab super duty on a 2 poster? You got like zero extensions on the front legs, and like ALL OF EM on the back, those end up like like a rocking horse while you work! Idea for your dirt floor shop! Locate a steel plate, (probably minimum 3/8" thick ) a bit larger than the footprint of this type of lift, thus you would have a solid place to put the lift on. Look for a used steel plate.
