History lover from the UK here. Volk it was the Norman's who made most of the stone structures that you see nowadays. When they conquered England in 1066 they built LOTS of mostly wooden castles often built on even OLDER Anglo-Saxon, Roman and Iron age Motte and Bailey Castles. Once they conquered the rest of England they started turning these Wooden Castles into Stone Castles with huge Stone Keeps to stamp their power across the country. They were often held by a skeleton crew but would swell to the size of a small town when royalty visited for a short time. They also built a lot of Stone Churches that are dotted everywhere. My girlfriend and I grew up about 5 miles away from each other in Hampshire and we both had 1000 year old Norman churches that we would attend every week at Primary school so you can imagine just how many there are dotted about! You're Australian Volk so this is your true homeland, come to Hampshire and let me show you around the old Capital Winchester and places like Stone Henge! 1000 years old is nothing in this country you'll be shocked!!!

Lancashire, Cheshire, both beautiful. From there you are 1 hour from wales (snowdonia is stunning), 1 hour from the Pennine mountains (highest region of England) 1 hourish from the Lake District (stunning). It’s a great spot to see a great slice of the UK from a central hub. London is so far removed from what he rest of the UK is like.

If you want castles you want the North of England into Scotland, there all made for different purposes and at different times, some to protect from Vinkings, some we're built by the Romans and others built by the Templars and different kings through 1000s of years of history, we've got a 1200 year old castle just 1 mile from our house, England is a beautiful place, always welcome to our Australian cousins 🤝🏽 hope you enjoyed your time here volk and the team!

MMA and History, amazing. Castles didn’t really exist in England until 1066. Once William the Conqueror won at the Battle of Hastings, he faced further challenge with the nobles of the land. Castles were not well known, and he built these as a way to help suppress revolts. The occupiers of the castles were typically Norman nobles and knights. These castles were much smaller, and most were what is known as a motte and bailey. This would typically be a wooden or stone keep on a raised area surrounded by a wall, with a protective ditch around it. As time passed, the designs kept up, with stone keeps being built and outer walls and gatehouses. They were still often occupied by nobles, or used as administrative centres or bases for hunting. After the English Civil War, Oliver Cromwell ordered the destruction of a lot of castles as a way to weaken aristocracy and to make it difficult for them to mount any resistance. Some famous castles were built by William following his conquest, such as the White Tower in the Tower of London. Wales has so many castles, and these were built to suppress opposition. For such a small country there are probably over 600 castles there.
