1000cc Trophy Kart Build Pt. 3 | Mounting the Rear Axle

We build the beginning of a dashboard for the 1000cc BMW powered Trophy Kart! We were especially careful to leave PLENTY of room for feet & legs. We also mounted the rear differential! Out solid axle is from a 1981 Chevrolet Chevette. It's heavy, but it ought to be absolutely bulletproof for reliably putting the BMW K100's 90 horsepower to the ground.
Thanks for Watching!

A possible idea: Weld a 1 1/4" keyed coupler on the driveshaft, and on the opposite end, so you can run a gopowersports 1 1/4 axle as a driveshaft.

Cant wait to see how this project turns out!! Although, Miata shocks and coil-overs aren't gonna give you the plush, long travel suspension that your wanting and that this chassis needs. Miata suspension is made for a 2,000 pound car and at the most have 5 inches of travel. Go on eBay and get yourself some used shocks off a Polaris RZR or equivalent SxS. They are around the same price as used Miata suspension and will give you a lot better ride then any car shock will. Keep up the good work!

A thought; a Twin I Beam style suspension, both axle halves pivoted in front of the motor and front steered. If you use a drag link to operate one side the steering would avoid needing to go through the engine space.

They already know this. Aint their first rodeo. Becomes different ball game with extreme travel.
@fredericrike5974
@fredericrike5974 4 жыл бұрын
@@SportbikerNZ Agreed- the current hhot set up with some of the four wheelers in Texas is based on the Ford Twin I beam- huge travel. it does have some geometry probs at full droop, but for a back country vehicle that will seldom see 45 mph, no big problem. The front steer is to get the tie rods and such away from the motor, and those tie rods need to be the same length and plus or minus 105 of the individual axle length. While I'll agree this isn't their first rodeo, they are looking for something they really have not built before- 18" suspension travel, bounce and jounce is huge- a Humvee doesn't have 60% of that. Also the Twin I Beam is not on the menus they have been working from, so I thought I'd through it in there. FWIW, all front end geometry becomes iffy at the extremes of most long travel designs. Additionally, a drag link type of steering gear will avoid having to pass the steering shaft through the motor, rather by the side of the motor and tie the drag link end to the steering arm on one side and "share" the input thru long, articulated tie rods, run parallel to the axles at ride height , equal length and with their "input ends" very close to the same point as the pivot for the steering knuckle they are tied to.

For minimizing bump steer a double wishbone setup is pretty easy and will keep your speed up in the rough straights. In our baja SAE cars we have 10-12" of travel on a 15" A arm setup and can keep it under 3 degrees of bump steer. Getting into bump steer while turning is some high level stuff and more trial and error with CAD simulations than anything, so I wouldn't recommend bothering with it for this. For setting it up, just make sure the tie rod mounts of the steering rack are in line with a line drawn from the upper A arm pivot axis and the Lower A arm pivot axis, and that the upright's steering link mount holds the link as close to parallel with the A arms as possible. It won't be perfect throughout the whole travel due to your kingpin angle giving you unequal length upper and lower A arms, but if you can have it parallel at right height it should be pretty close through most of travel. Since you probably aren't building a steering rack from scratch, you'll probably have to make extensions to whatever your found and support them with just some plain nylon or UHMW bushings, but mounted inboard by the distance of the racks travel. (so the rack would have to be pretty skinny, like something from a quad, UTV, or golfcart rather than a car). In a front mounted tie rod design, pivoting the steering link towards the wheel will increase ackerman, while bringing it in towards the car will get you closer to parallel steering. How much ackerman you want depends on how much wheel spin you're going to have, and whether you plan to drift through the corners or brake and try to corner them properly. In my experience with vehicles with a 70% rear 30% front weight balance, the parallel steering is very susceptible to understeer (even at higher speeds), while it can actually get some grip with around 70-80% ackerman steering because the front tires aren't fighting each other until the rear breaks traction.

On camera, the angles of the proposed drive shaft look a little crazy. It could be different in person, but from the video, it looks like it could end up being a problem on the first drive. I almost think it would be easier to use a different rear diff, like one from and old Miata, it would give you a longer drive shaft and make it easier to aim the pinion where you want it. If you want to make it work what you got, I respect it, its going to be nasty any way you guys go about it. Awesome concept.

I'd suggest changing the torque tube mount so it pivots vertically. The stock rubber isolator won't have enough flex for the suspension travel you want. You could do it easily by trimming the stock mounting plate and welding on a washer to each side vertically. Add pieces of angle to the mounting plates on the frame and bolt the washers to them loosely so they will pivot. If you use the torque tube as a suspension link, you won't need to add 4 more links. In fact, it will probably cause binding. The tube will control pinion and brake torque as well as forward and reverse thrust. The coil overs will control roll and jounce. I would extend the outer suspension links to pivot on the same axis as the front torque tube mount to control yaw. BTW the gear ratio of the Chevette rear should be 3.36:1. Also, Chevette brakes really SUCK. Consider changing to disc brakes. Nice start on this build!
