1000cc Trophy Truck Build | Rolling Chassis + Steering!

We fabricate steering for the front of our 1000cc BMW powered trophy kart, giving us a rolling chassis! Unfortunately, the steering needs heavy revision. Because of the twin I beam front suspension setup (and well over 12 inches of travel), we're running into excessive bump steer issues. We use a 90 degree PTO box, heim joints, tubing, and flat bar to build the steering, but it has more bump steer than we'd like, the steering ratio is too quick, and the steering box we're using may not hold up to the abuse we'll be throwing at this machine. We've ordered parts and will tackle it next time!

Hey guys, this twin I beam is really cool, it's your first time with this suspension design so don't be sad to make mistakes. To eliminate bump steer, your first idea with the crossing linkage was working great because the steering pivot was almost exactly where the suspension pivot was (just like for a double wishbone setup). I really advise you to keep this idea and put a slight bend on the steering linkage (will no affect strengh as much as you'd think), combine this design with a rack and pinion and try using a 5/8" rod below the engine for steering, plenty strong and the steering column will just need two universal joints on the steering wheel side. Really loving this project so far, keep up the good work and stay motivated !!

@@charliegijones Yeah, this could also work, but to ensure that one wheel doesn't turn more than the other, you have to really be careful about the distances of the linkage mounting holes and the 4 pivots. Still, there is a risk that one wheel become harder to turn than the other, could become a bit strange when driving over bumps.

I have a gokart that had the same problem with the steering being really stiff and really short so I used a old Toyota pickup steering box with gear reduction now I can turn with one finger while sitting still

Congratulations on the tractor, John, I'm in the landscaping business and run those Kubota diesels all the time. those engines will run forever as long as their taken care of, but my advice to you is to not let it sit for long periods of time. With your gokarts, you can let them sit for years and then revive them with a can of carb cleaner, but the diesels aren't that simple. Diesels like that love work, and the best thing for them is simply regular use. If you get a PTO mower for it and use it to mow often, it'll be fine, just don't let it sit for more than a month tops, or you'll have some serious fuel system problems to deal with. Also, on that PTO box you used for steering, don't worry about the torque. the 40 horsepower rating doesn't include safety margins, and even then, the starting torque of a tractor that puts out 40 hp to the PTO is a ton greater than any torque that you guys could put into the steering wheel.

As someone with that exact tractor, here are a few things that are a must for that little beast: 1) Proper chevron pattern tires.2) Solid fill AT LEAST the front, liquid-fill the rear. Those small front tires really don't like staying on under load. And yes, solid fill is not cheap ($500 for both sides) but you'll be glad you did it. 2.5) More weight lower, the better since the tractor is narrow. Again, liquid filling the tires help. A big weight box on the 3pt hitch will do wonders for helping with loader work as well. When at capacity the back tires will barely touch the ground so the tractor will strafe instead of turning. Useful in some cases, but scary AF especially since the front axle pivots. A tiller is the best weight since it'd heavy and is a useful tool.3) If you plan on doing dirt work with the bucket, make a ripper hook for the back. I used 1/2 x 3" steel for the blade and 3" pipe for the structure. That little tractor is more powerful than you think when it comes to pulling, provided there's traction, so don't go too thin on the blade. Unfortunately by itself it is way too light to be useful for dirt work so a nice ripper that can go a foot or so underground will do wonders with breaking up the dirt to it can be scooped up. 4) The mower is a bit wider than the loader, so take it off of you're doing some tight work with the bucket. 5) Fuel shut off solenoid will go bad. Replacement is about $100, but you can block off where it goes and run a cable to the shutoff arm on the engine. A cheap and reliable alternative. With that mod the tractor will happily run even with key off, so keep that in mind. 6) Bolts where loader attaches to the frame of the tractor will come loose. Check them from time to time. 7) The tractor can be pull-started. It is difficult AF, but possible for a larger guy. Wrap the rope around the flywheel. It is on the front of the tractor and easy to get to with body off. Use necessary precautions and all that, obviously. 8) Make sure the mower deck shaft is securely on, otherwise you will be buying an oil filter relocation kit after the shaft comes lose and knocks off the trans filter. It is a regular automotive spin on, but the nipple it screws on is made into the transaxle. 9) The transaxle is also the hydraulic pump for steering, loader, and aux hydraulic output on the back (if equipped) so make sure the fluid level stays up. 10) The loader can be easily removed. Lift it up, unfold the stabilizer legs, curl bucket up and lower it on the ground. Wiggle the loader until two big retaining pins can easily slide out, then slowly drive back while "lifting" the bucket until the loader is free of the frame. Shut the tractor off and disconnect the three hydraulic lines. One of the tractor lines has to be looped into the other, but they will only go one way. Having the loader off is useful for mowing. Will probably add more stuff to the tractor video itself, if you do make one and i remember more stuff. Have fun and be safe!

The first steering mock up was correct. The opposing linkages will need a bend to prevent touching. Also, the 90* gearbox looks to be for a tractor, and a 40 horse tractor will put out a ton of torque. Keep up the good work guys.

The less angle that you have on your tie rods going up to the steering box, the less bump steer you’ll have. Keeping them as flat as possible allows for up and down motion without the rods changing distance from the main pivot point. I’ve used skewers for kabobs and masking tape to help mock up things like this. Gives you a good understanding of how things will work without wasting materials. You’ll figure it out, good luck!

Hello Issac and John, you guy's should have a bottle of white vinegar for burns. If the skin isn't broken from getting burned you can pour a little bit of vinegar over the fresh burn and it will prevent the blister from forming and will keep the pain to a minimum and in a week or two the skin will sluff off with no soreness what so ever. Apple cider vinegar is best but white vinegar works too.

Yep, or slight preload angle with vehicle sitting still, so when suspension compresses it moves past center. The more angle, the more bump steer. Longer arms are also better. Inside end points near pivot point of control arms is also preferred so they track with the control arms.

You should take an aerial photo of the property either using a drone or Google maps satellite view and trace out your track layouts. I'm always curious about what the route looks like when you do your time attack runs. Because we can't really see much once you leave the start line. I think that would be really neat. I was just thinking about a jack shaft,mount the steering shaft above the magic box with pillow blocks and with 2 to 1 gears and chain, then straight into the cab and steering wheel. The way the box mounts in your frame looks like a natural. Just a thought, this build is far out, can't wait to see it rip!

Nice drill press, it will help with doing better Fab work. I think that in order to move the channel forward and also for your own personal development you need to get more fab tools. In keeping with your channels theme of using other people’s cast offs and being accessible to home builders you should buy old beat up equipment and fix it. Isaac seems to have a nack for finding old equipment on the cheap so go with it. You really need a mill, lathe, bandsaw, home made welding table and iron worker. All can be found at auctions or shops that are upgrading. A lot of us home builders have shops filled with other people’s cast offs. For the small amount that they are used they work great.

Twin I beam suspension has never excelled at its job. Double wishbone is always the best solution. Also this project did not have ackerman's angle in the midsection pivots. Glad to hear you're changing it. :)

I couldn't help but laugh when John called a 2000 Kubota a beater. Granted, I haven't seen it yet, but I've got a '52 Case in my yard that I dug out of my grandpa's shed to replace the engine. Gas powered, 2wd, hand clutch, no power steering. Plus the starter's bad and I can't find the crank, so I have to pull it with the truck to start it. I think you're going to find a lot more uses for your Kubota than you expect. Loader tractors are awesome.

For the least amount of toe change and bump steering, it is necessary to pivot the tie rods where the inner control arms pivot. That way they stay in the same relative position to the control arms no matter what angle they are at. This is easier with a-arms than it is with i-beams. Take some ideas from ford's steering linkages on their i-beam axle trucks.

To eliminate bump steer completely the tie rod has to be the same length as the lower control arm and be parallel so the tie point to the steering box or joint has to be in the same relative position as the lower pivot point of the wheel hub relative to the place where the tie rod connects... it’s hard to explain in words... it’s just that the tie rod length and the lower control arm have to be the same length and parallel in both horizontal an vertical planes. good luck!

Remember most lifted trucks more than 4.5 inches. Have atleast a 2' drop pitman arm!!!, time to go to some lifted mudd bogg truck research mabey you will have to do a small hydro ram assist set.up for fast response. From a small tractor??!!!!! the advantage to having the steering handled by two separate points that are linked together (the way you originally had it, instead of linked directly like they are here), is that you can give those two individual steering linkages a little bit of a toe out. that way, when the steering is centered, they both point straight, but when you turn, the inside wheel pivots more. also, the reason that first design had zero bump steer is because the pivots for the steering rods were very close to the pivots for the suspension arms.

When you shortened the tie rods and made them more than 5%-10% different lengths than the half axles, bump steer was inevitable. Isaac, you've obviously got a lot from the modified twin i beam trucks- they led you to a design with tie rods equal or nearly equal to the length of the half axles. NOw, put a tie rod, close to the length of the half axle, on to the right side wheel- visualize that free end controlled by the arm of the magic box, mounted to where it's arm centers on the tie rod end with the right tire straight ahead. Install the other tie rod, the same length as the right one, onto the left steering arm. Hold that tie rod free end where it falls on the right steering arm tie rod- right there you need put a bolt and joint so that the right tie rod moving will then move the left tie rod. There will be some bump at the +4 inches and -4 inches of travel, but it won't be much and it will largely be when the front wheels are unloaded. Mock it up and see it your self- PVC would be fast and cheap. A traditional recirculating ball type steering box would be easier to adapt to this- a small one if possible.John, shortening the tie rods will amplify the bump steer effect.

I built a mini buggy for the kids with a 420 predator and atv a arms. I used a john deer tractor steering box. It was slow steering like almost 4 turns lock to lock but the kids had no trouble steering it. Worked out really good with a small go cart steering wheel. I bolted a knob it it when I was rally sporting the buggy

well, i'm glad you figured out that you need idler arms ("pivot arms"), but you would've had a better setup if you mounted them longitudinally so the rod ends (heims) would only need to articulate forward/back movement of the traction beams.

Steering is so hard because of the angle of the tie rods, it’s trying to push the tires down instead of tie rods out, a rack an pinion will make it easier but not solve the bump steer. Best luck guys love the videos keep it up !!

Rack and pinion probably will cause more problems than it solves. Your left drag link pivot will line up with the right suspension pivot and vice versa. Unless you mount it behind the axle centerline so right turn is left and left turn is right then and tie the draglinks to the far sides of the rack not the close ones. Lol very confusing to try an type out but im interested to see what you come up with. I like the steering quickener idea

Unless you do crossover steering, like your first design, a rack and pinion will only make the bump steer worse. Bump steer is caused by the suspension arms and steering arms pivoting through different arcs. The bigger the difference between the 2 pivot distances, the worse your bump steer is. The location of the pivots is also important, so they converge on the same imaginary point when a line is drawn through all of the joints.

Guys love tour channel! If you pause it at exactly 15:54 you see a pretty nasty side effect. On the screen, if you move the LEFT wheel up and down in its suspension, you will get nothing on the other wheel - perfect. However, if the RIGHT wheel is moved up and down, due to the lever action, you will also get extra steer motion in the left wheel as well. This thing will actually steer differently going left and going right, and going over bumps will actually pull the car to one side each and every time. I would highly suggest going back to the original setup, with steering arms as long as the suspension arms, and bending them for clearance. As it stands at 15:54 this thing is going to steer very oddly, especially over bumps you only hit with one wheel, in this case (in the paused video) the right wheel. It will pull you to the right everytime you go over a bump. Bump steer is relatively ok if both wheels move the same going over a bump, but this thing will corner very oddly. It will understeer going one way and oversteer going the other.

I think a rack and pinion is gonna be the way to go. With that many extra joints, it's just asking for problems down the road (trail?). I think if you can get the rack mounted close to dead center in the middle of the suspension travel, biased closer to the normal resting position, it shouldn't be TOO bad.

Hey Ike and John you guys should look at lawn tractor Steering because one tie rod runs off of the steering box and then the other tire rod runs off of the bottom or top of the spindle

It works on the ford trucks, because there isn’t much travel, and they are very wide. It was a good idea for heavy trucks, since actual I beams were very strong, and it supported the engines. For what they are doing, IFS would be MUCH better, and WAY easier to set up. It would still look cool too, and if they did it right it would be lighter, or close to the same weight as the twin I beam. The annoying fact is that they think it is “original”, but Grind Hard Plumbing Co. already used it on Senderella, and you can see how difficult it was for them.. **sighs** I’m just going to have to build one of these some day 😂

Ike and John in Moto mules last project he used an electrical steering assist so his kids could drive it easily Have a talk to him Also you only tried to use the present steering at the box If you ran it up to the position it should be and put a steering wheel on it the leverage would assist you and you should get a true indication of what it should be.
