I love this! I'm almost there. I HATE those covered boxes..too small but also covered means out of sight out of mind so we don't clean them like we should! I will get bigger boxes now. I do have 'big cat' boxes but will go bigger. Thanks!

Clumping litter is typically bentonite clay. This clay expands many times its dry state when exposed to liquid. So what do you think happens when your cat inhales the dust, and it is dusty, or licks the litter off that sticks to paws, and fur. It can possibly cause an intestinal blockage. It did occasionally lead to sneezing in my cats. And as it is mined from the earth, it has a negative environmental impact. I use pine pellets, fully biodegradable, and even recyclable in areas that put out compost recycling bins. I tried pushing my hand down hard in a clean litter box of pine pellets, and it didn't hurt at all. I get a 40 pound bag for under $8 at Tractor Supply. Urine turns the compressed pellets into sawdust, which can be sifted out, and it is this sawdust that I recycle. Also as the pellets are biodegradable, I can just scoop, and flush the poop. My cats are indoor cats not fed raw food, so toxoplasmosis is not a concern to me.

You are by far the BEST instructor I have come across. A dedicated cat lover can tell how much work and observations you have made. Personally, I had not paid that much of attention to such so called details. Yet, despite the fact that my house seems too small now to host 22 cats indoors, I can visualize all my errors, which my cats in their grandeur, FORGAVE me although THEY could kick ME out of the house and not vice versa as the common practice is. Thank you for your precious assistance, indeed dum spiro spero, you taught me many interesting and good things to apply to make them feel more happy and comfortable. Ziggie, Marathon-Greece

Thank you for such a detailed video. I found the answer to our cat scratching excessively on the sides of her kitty litter. Our current set up is her kitty litter box inside a large container like you have. It worked brilliantly keeping litters inside it. I will try removing the kitty litter box and dump it into the big outer box and hopefully that will stop the excessive scratching.

I'm a new cat owner😮I've been completely changing the litter box every Sunday. But, u said every 3 months. It just seems it would smell really bad if I waited that long. I'm still learning 😌
@aesaphyr5 ай бұрын
I think that depends on a lot of factors. I'm also a new cat owner who changes every week, and the reason I suspect she doesn't have to change hers so often is because she has a huge litter box (so more fresh litter in it at any given time - she says she uses 40 lb or approx 20 kg of litter per box, which is a LOT), her litter clay is probably of very good quality which makes it easier to get out all the used parts (the one I use doesn't always clump that well for pee), and she has adult cats who probably leave larger clumps which are easier to scoop out. This video has got me rethinking the size of my own litter boxes and thinking of going bigger...

Thank you SOOO much for posting this video, I am actually learning so much about litter boxes and I've had my boy for 6 years now. The litter box I am using for him is big enough for him, but I think it might be time for an upgrade soon. Summer time my cat seems to prefer going outdoors, and I'm now starting to think and question the reason for it. It's a closed in box, it doesn't have the flappy door that it came with, but maybe thats why. I'll try taking the lid off and see how it goes. Thanks for your knowledge.

What a great video! We have five cats - two very large, very long, cats and three medium sized cats. We have several GIANT plastic tubs that we use as litter boxes and several "large" stainless steel boxes. The stainless steel ones are big enough for our smaller cats, but not for our big boys. Despite this, all of them prefer the smaller boxes! 🤦🏻♀️ Doesn't matter where in the house they are, everyone prefers one specific box, followed by the other small ones, and finally the big ones are only used occasionally. Weirdos lol

I’ve used a pine pellet-based cat litter for years. It absorbed odors well, and my cats were happy with it, so it was a win-win. Recently, however, my home was infested with bull ants, which are known for their extremely painful bites. The exterminator I hired identified the ants as being attracted to the sugar in the wood pellets.

Loved the video I’ll be sticking with pine pellets for me though they’re just so much easier and my cat uses the litter box just fine. I hate clumping litter just because it’s hard to see any blood in urine and I really hate scraping it off the bottom of the bin. I do use a really large bin just so she has plenty of space.

I pushed my hand down hard into a clean litter box full of pine pellets, and it didn't hurt at all. Bentonite clay used in clumping litter expands many times its dry state when exposed to liquid, and it's dusty, which also contains cancer causing silica. So what do you think happens when cats inhale this dust, or lick it off of their paws. It has the potential to cause intestinal blockages. My cats sneezed when I used it. Me personally, I'll never go back to clumping clay, I like the low cost of pine pellets, and the fact that they're biodegradable, and recyclable in areas that put out compost recycling bins.

Oh my goodness! Thank you so much for this video! This is so informative and we have four kitties and our toy poodle is visiting the "litter box buffet" when they use the boxes and the large totes will keep her out of them! Yay! Also, we have two super large cats over 34" long and they will love a much bigger box to get into :). I love the cat length with tail explaination for litter box size. This upgrade will also make their bedroom more neat and tidy. We have smaller litter mats like your extra large ones outside of three of their boxes and still have a lot of litter scatter but I will be investing in the extra large litter mats for their room. This makes me so happy to find a relatively inexpensive upgrade that will make them purr with excitement :).

Thank you for the explanation of why they scratch at walls etc. My one year old boy has been driving me insane! Scratches at the wall. Doesn't bury his poo. My two cats have pica as well. We had clay litter for the first 3.5 years of their life and then switched to a walnut shell cat litter. I’ve never seen them try to eat it and I am around them all day. I have a few other kinds of natural litter I was going to test but there was a good deal on this one so I ended up buying 6 40lb bags so it’ll be a while before I can see whether they prefer this to corn or paper. I only purchased ones that had a similar consistency to their clay litter (so no pellets). We have been able to compost the cat litter in my beyondgreen electric pet waste compost bin.

My cats loved the horse bedding pine pellets you mentioned as I used it in a Breeze litter box so the soaked pellets would turn into saw dust bits and go through the slots to the shallow pan I replaced the bottom of the breeze box with and only the dry pine pellets stayed in the top layer where the cat was. Many other people love this arrangement also so you are incorrect saying that they are innapropriate for cats or the people who used them for their cats would soon dislike them as their cats would not use them. And yes they are much more ecologically healthy as clay litter is acquired by strip mining the earth which is truly horrible for the earth! I did try the corn litter and it is awful as it stinks to high heaven from fermenting very quickly after the cat has used it only a few times. Those covered litter boxes cause asthma because of the CLAY DUST having no where else to go but in a cats lungs whenever he tries to cover his deposits. Neither the pine litter pellets nor the Breeze litter pellets emits that dust so they won’t cause asthma or breathing problems. My cats are average sized tuxedo cats and have no problem with the size of the Breeze litter boxes. Both boxes are covered but with no doors. I have stopped using the pine litter as I wasn’t paying enough attention to it so now I just use the breeze litter pellets and my cats use them faithfully and I cut a puppy pad in half & the urine goes through to the shallow bottom pan I replaced the bottom part of the breeze box with and soaks the puppy pad about ever fourth day and is then replaced while the feces are scooped daily from the pelleted top box. I do provide a 8 inch I high box at the entrance of the boxes as a helpful step into the boxes for my older cat. Now they don’t have to stand in or on a wet litter and I don’t have to change these pellets but every three months which is cheaper than normal litter but not near as cheap as pine pellets. If the Breeze pellets get an ammonia smell I spray them with white cleaning vinegar which chemically neutralizes ammonia naturally and stops the odor.

To add a tip - if your cat's poop really smells and is potent if even if you aren't at the litterbox yourself, it's likely a sign your cat's diet needs improving. Kibble will do this, it also makes them poop more because it's at least 30% carbohydrates (empty filler calories) which cats can't even digest resulting in more frequent and smellier poops. Wet is better than dry food, raw is better overall.

I've been trying to get him to use pine pellets but I find he will not poop in it, just pees. I've only used storage bins, I agree, litter boxes are just way too small. I recently tried using the grass litter which I find is just too light weight and tracks way too much. He still will go on the floor. After watching this video I'm now thinking that despite the health benefits of a more natural form of litter, my cat may very well prefer clay litter. I may purchase some to try. The light had turned to red! The light color for clean air is green. I was shocked. I had inhaled some of the dust and my lungs burned. As an asthmatic I shouldn't use clumping clay. The only plus of clay litter is it's cheap. You shouldn't be pushing clay litter. As for corn litter, if it's rotting then you don't know what you should be doing.

This all sounds so simple, but as with anything in life, things are never as simple as you think. I would advise anyone who does love constantly cleaning boxes constantly not to have more than 2 or 3 inside cats. When you go past that, number of cats plus 1 might not be enough, and you can follow the instructions on this video with so many boxes after a while. She is right. Most litter box makers don't make good litter boxes with any kind of size. I've seen cats not get all of the way into a box before. I find that clay litter can clump too hard too fast. Keep an inside cat's area clean is a lot of work. I can understand why people give up. I had to deal with one cat using the the bathroom outside of the box every 3 or 4 days once, and it was getting frustrating. There were plenty of boxes in the room. Having to scoop more than once a day can be a lot for some. A lot of the sifting ones say to put the sifting box on top, but that makes the sifter just get dirty usually. Sometimes even with huge mats litter still tracks. Also, for some cats it can be hard to figure out how much is too much or too little

I have a cat that has scratched outside of the box since I got him as a kitten. I have used different litter boxes, litters, doesn't matter. I'm currently using medium mixing tubs from Home Depot that are 20" x 28", and cheap, so a small box, or enclosed box are not issues. And I've used clumping clay in these, and am currently using pine pellets, no difference. He just doesn't seem to understand the purpose of litter, scratching at the sides of the box, and even the floor, and since my litter boxes are in the bathroom, God forbid you drop an article of clothing within reach, because he'll pull that in to cover his business.
