That voice actor argument Nolan brought up really bothers me when Izzy said “that’s different” when he brought up Phil Lamar on Jack and her argument is “it’s because it’s a white guy it’s weirder.” I was waiting for Izzy to explain how till she backs off of it because “it’s too much of a sensitive subject.” It irks me and it feels hypocritical.

Why doesn't Izzy make an argument? She just slaps a dumb label on shit then moves on. I'd like to hear her out but she doesn't say anything that isn't a super surface level observation. Nolan claims that people want to look at things through a super specific lens, but no one made an argument for why Apu is not ok. In this podcast of course, maybe they go into more depth elsewhere.

No. Hank Azaria voicing Apu and Phil Lamarr voicing Samurai Jack are not different situations; they are the exact same thing. Both of them are actors doing a job they were paid to do, no matter what the race of the characters they are portraying is. Keep entertainment non-racially-segregated and without double-standards (also it's ironic that a white person is determining what the rules are for acting in regards to race, meanwhile attempting to seem "sympathetic" to minorities).

They are different things. Hank Azaria playing Apu isn't the issue, it's that coupled with the fact that Apu's entire character revolves around making fun of Indian people. Samurai Jack was created out of interest and respect for Asian culture with the character being a completely dignified badass meanwhile Apu was created so the audience can laugh at harmful stereotypes and the character was the butt of all the jokes

Apu was technically a good character- someone who was a small business owner, romantic/charismatic AF with the Ladies, and has high educational degree. In regards to Apu, I side with Max G. much more. I think the argument that no one gets up set about Mario being a massive stereotype but no one seems to care is fair. How is Mario any more different than Apu ? Mario himself has become a caricature of Italians. I think Izzy talking about "marginalized people" is just an attempt to diffuse the argument by saying "it's bad cause racism". Max brings up the point that when you become selective of who can be mocked and who can't be, you start to treat one race in a better way than an other, is in itself is racist. It's better to mock everyone one equally rather than be selective because you don't want to hurt anyone's feelings. If a Christian person watches the south park where Kyle knifes Jesus to death, would their level of comfort not be taken into account ? I don't think art should be subservient to the comfort of the audience, because if you don't challenge people what is art really for? Even kids shows challenge their audience. Apu is an intelligent, hardworking, thoughtful character. In a show where everyone is a stereotype, I don't think it's fair to single out one character. What about the Bee guy being a stereotype of Mexicans or Willie being a stereotype of the Scottish ? Why aren't they seen as offensive? Either everything is okay or none of its okay.

@VoidBoi420
@VoidBoi420 6 жыл бұрын
@@windmoonsoon4472 I don't think Apu is an inhuman stereotype. He's much more than his accent. In fact they even bring it up in the show that Apu is ,in a way, a parody of the Indian American sterotype. I mean if were gonna boil things down to skin color you really aren't being fair. Is the the Lucky Charms Leaprchuan racist ? Irish people were treated with the same civil Injustices as blacks in the early 20th century, and it was acknowledged as recent as 2013's Bioshock infinite. You can't just say something is racist because of the history. The context of Apu changes the entire idea of the character. I mean is the story of OJ racist just because it has black face? No, because with in the context of the narrative that they're telling it's used as a vehicle for satire. Comedy and satire are mirrors that we use to reflect back on ourselves. And as the saying goes "all stereotypes exist for a reason". People like Apu exist and in my opinion he's an incredibly flattering depiction of an Indian immigrant. Yeah he has an accent because he was born in idea, he also has a doctoral degree in computer science and owns a small business. Name one other Indian character as flattering as Apu. Because it's not Raj from the Big Bang theory or Kumar. I'm not saying there aren't any but I've seen Indian people portray themselves in a pretty unflattering light on their own.

Or Homer being a stereotype of fat people/dads Or Marge being a stereotype of housewives Or Lisa being a stereotype of smart people/nerds Or Bart being a stereotype of bad kids Point is that every character is based upon a stereotype. It bothers me that Izzy throws that video to the curb because she thinks it doesn't address the issues of the Doc Max was criticizing by allegedly ignoring aspects of it (Which I question in my head...what did he miss? Only to get nothing further from Izzy). But misses the fact that his video is more of a companion piece to it rather than a review of the actual doc itself. Max assumes that the people who are going to watch a 40 min long video about The Problem with Apu Doc would have most likely watched it and knows its contents. What more could he have done that doesn't just plagiarize the entire doc? He gave his defence, he covered the BIG major criticisms that were used against the character in a way that was far less over the top than the doc and surprisingly less antagonistic, he gave valid points and insight that seem to have trumped the doc's baseless accusations of ill intent behind the scenes of the studio and gave the doc a equilibrium of double standards on the subject of voice acting. Something mind you Izzy wants to dismiss Samurai Jack as being a "different" subject for a sensitive subject too much to handle apparently. Because I guess all minorities are just that... JUST minorities. Interchangeable for whatever bull shit idiots want to spout. But alright lets exchange one critically acclaimed show for another BUT this time with white people the ever so critically acclaimed and beloved Avatar the Last Air Bender Aang=white, Katara=white, Sokka=white, Fire Lord= The fucking Joker. Where is the uproar Izzy? Where's the uproar? Oh yeah their wasn't one and there will never be one. I don't get why the Comedian didn't want Apu to be removed from the show. Like, he dislikes the character and thinks it's a racist depiction of Indian people, so what is wrong about removing Apu then? You can talk about 'fixing' Apu, but in reality there isn't really anything to fix. Changing his voice actor does nothing if you are just going to get an Indian voice actor to do a similar voice, only proves that there was nothing wrong with the original to begin with. If you replace the voice actor and make him use a normal American Accent and everything else relating to his Indian descent or other aspects that could be seen as offensive, such as him working the Quickie-Mart, you suddenly have a blank character that has no reason to be around in a comedy show and is nothing like his original self. Basically, you have just created a new character anyway and erased what was Apu. You might not have wanted him to be removed, but that's the only way to truly 'fix' the problem with Apu.

But then that gets into the conversation of why is this exclusive to Apu? @rikowolfin4984
@rikowolfin4984 6 жыл бұрын
@@GamerSlyRatchet1 But that's the thing, he is more than just the stereotype that you see him as, all of those things are just skin deep aspects of the character himself and there is hardly if anything directly offensive to Indian people relating to the character. He is arguably the most well represented character in the whole show, being shown as smart with a high education, a kind caring person and having his own dreams of why he came to America in the first place which makes him seem more human and relatable. The only thing that could really be seen as a negative is his voice and that is done to literally every other character in the show as well. Again, if you take away everything that could be seen as negative, such as making him sound American and remove him from working at the Quickie mart along with other things such as mentions of his religion or people, or even down to his looks, you might as well remove the character completely because suddenly you just have a normal person in a cartoon show about exaggerated cartoon characters. Then there is the fact that Apu is the least stereotypical/'racist' character in the show, if you are going to give Apu this treatment then why not the rest of the cast as well if this is such a bad thing to have? Now we are left with nothing, not a comedy show, not even a boring Simpsons show anymore, you literally have the fairy odd parents episode of the grey blob people except everyone has the same/no voice.

I don't understand the point that Izzy made about Hank Azaria voicing Apu being differen't from Phil LaMarr voicing Samurai Jack. Just because Hank is white, that automatically means he isn't allowed to voice a character of a different race? Is he really advocating that white people be excluded from voicing characters who aren't white? That would be discrimination. The worst part is that nobody addressed this obvious flaw in his argument. Why? Was it because he claimed Hank is privileged white man, and therefor nothing can be said in his defense? If you are going to bring these issues up, please follow them through all the way, instead of backing away from them.

Podcast 108 : Aka , the podcast where they talk about the apu controversy for a decent portion kf the podcast ( even though now its pointless), they bring up the idea of a pizza party podcast game(which I'd totally play), Sophie for the time she appeared was the best part , as well as the others still try to wonder if Pan is still a virgin.I must say it feels like it's been eons since we've had a podcast with just the main 4 ( well at least if you don't count Sophie anyway), it honestly feels pretty nice, also who else agrees the Halloween styled podcast icons were a nice touch.

To me, one of the worst nitpickers out there are the SpongeBob SquarePants fanatics that really love to critique the fuck out of every single episode in existence as if they're treating them all like they're chronologically canon towards each other by having to overanalyze every single joke and conflict at hand of whatever /said episode/ that they're 'reviewing' when it all actuality, it's not suppose to make any sort of logical sense whatsoever.

That "Steven Universe is Garbage and Here's Why" video has like 1.3 million views, yet there were like only 148 comments. And this was like two or three days ago when I decided to watch that video. The likes and subscriber count are hidden so... yeah, suspicious. I agreed with stuff like _SU_ returning from a long-ass hiatus just to air 5 episodes of filler just to disappear for another 12 months. Maybe the plot writing points too, such as character development and motivation being inconsistent or contradictory. But the SJW ranting and nitpicks of animation scaling were not my cup of tea. And maybe someone might not like how Rebecca Sugar runs things, but that doesn't validate or entitle people to slander her as a person

Film producer Adi Shankar said he had heard form many people close to the simpsons that they had plans to just remove Apu all together, the removal of Apu was not confirmed by any official source, though. Executive Producer of the Simpson Al Jean even responded by saying to NBC “Apu appeared in the 10/14/18 episode 'My Way or the Highway to Heaven.'" Even if fox did have plans to remove him, I think they might change their minds. When comedian Hari Kondabolu( The creator of "The Problem With Apu") heard the rumors, he was not happy by it and tweeted "....There are so many ways to make Apu work without getting rid of him. If true, this sucks." So for now I think to say Apu isn't going anywhere but just might be tweaked a bit, to better represent Indian people, like Hari Kondabolu actually wants. www.nbcnews.com/news/asian-america/simpsons-reportedly-dropping-apu-amid-debate-over-character-n925096

What Criticism is: - Going over each scene or part of a movie/game/episode and quipping or complaining about it. - Pointing out "plot holes", editing mistakes or nitpicking for 5 minutes about Batman's hook in Batman Vs Superman What Criticism is: - "What is the point of the scenes with the auditioning parents? They are all seen as broad, desperate comic caricatures. They are not funny. They are not touching. There is no truth in them. They don't even work as parodies. There is an idiocy here that seems almost intentional, as if the filmmakers plotted to leave anything of interest or entertainment value out of these episodes." I completely agree with Jim's take on the whole Apu situation and outrage culture. Everyone is so quick to just take the easy path and straight up shut down a character or celebrity to not have to deal with the criticism. It really isn't helping anyone to give up on an idea without opening it up to discussion on both sides. We are getting to a point where the side that strikes first is the one who wins. Personally, even though I don't care about the Simpsons nowadays, I think that there are so many ways to handle this situation that result in a good narrative about comedy and the use of stereotypes. Izzy also brings up a good point about us white people not understanding how Indian people feel about Apu and their stereotypes in the media. Honestly there are times where I personally feel attacked by a joke, albeit rare, and I know it seems unfunny to hear from the standpoint as someone who is the butt of the joke, but I still feel like comedy can tackle pretty much any topic and it will always be offensive to someone. Granted some jokes are objectively bad, or straight up racist and shouldn't be said, but I still think shutting down someone entirely for a single joke or type of joke is a huge dick move, since people can learn from their mistakes. If your career was destroyed by one joke in bad taste it would be devastating. Why not inform people that what they said is hurtful without outright attacking them? Give them a chance to change their joke or at the very least don't fire them without giving them a platform to defend themselves. Sorry for the rant, I just really dislike outrage culture. Even racists can learn to change their ways, but they are more likely to do so if you don't just scream at their face. That is all. Good podcast episode Pan and crew.

I don’t really get the outrage over Apu being removed. I have no horse in the race either, but The Simpsons hasn’t been relevant for years. The almost universal consensus is that the show should’ve ended 18 years ago, or at least after the movie was released. With that in mind, why is writing off a supporting character in the show so worthy of outrage? I don’t agree with writing off a character from the show just because of some documentary about said character, but since when did people as a whole still care about The Simpsons? Also, I think people should probably lay off Hari Kondabolu. The guy didn’t even ask for Apu to be removed from the show, and he actually complained about the decision to remove him. He made a documentary about his personal problems with a cartoon character. Get over it. It’s a free country.
