The crazy thing about opioids is they really aren’t as dangerous as people think (in the way people think) opioids themselves actually don’t have any real toxicity to organs like NSAIDS (Tylenol and ibuprofen etc) are actually toxic to the organs. Our body has endogenous opioid receptors. It’s the overdose risk because people that abuse opioids usually abuse other substances and end up mixing them, which leads to respiratory depression that eventually just stops your breathing. But really, side by side, if looked at from a pharmacological standpoint, opioids are MUCH MUCH better for the body than many other substances, (most stimulants and alcohol are all neurotoxins too) in no way am I saying it’s a a better alternative, but looking at it from a health & pharmacological standpoint they are just a lot easier on the body. Alcohol is WAY worse for the body in every single aspect. It’s just a lower overdose risk because it’s legal and regulated. Because they pretty much banned opioids and made it very very hard to obtain a prescription, is the reason why the pills (opioids , oxycodone especially) are more “dangerous”, because they aren’t the real pills anymore so you don’t know what your taking. It’s just sad because if the laws changed people wouldn’t be dropping like this..

The government needs to give out safe supply of an opioid of choice or several to people who have failed abstinence based treatment a certain amount of times. Users will show up to a clinic like methadone clinics and receive a dose one or more times a day of the opioids oxycodone, oxymorphone, hydrocodone, hydromorphone, morphine & diacetylmorphine aka heroin. Doing this would eliminate the overdose crisis virtually overnight. It works in other countries and they already have clinics for methadone and Buprenorphine aka suboxone but it doesnt work because those drugs suck. Safe supply has worked in other countries.
