Syllabified phonetic transcriptions to match the pronunciations of the speaker: 10. extraordinary [ɪk`strɔːd n̩ ri] 9. question [`kwe^ stʃən] 8. lounge /laʊnʒ/ 7. buffet [`bʊ^ feɪ] 6. Cambridge [`keɪm brɪdʒ] 5. presentation [ˌpre zən 'teɪ^ ʃən] 4. Manchester ['mæn ˌtʃe^ stə] (Note that you have placed a post-tonic secondary stress on /tʃe/, which is pre-fortis clipped by the onset /s/ in the next syllable.) 3. suite /swiːt/ 2. resume [`re zə meɪ] 1. pronunciation [prə ˌnʌn^ sɪ'eɪ^ ʃən] (This transcription betters that of John Wells's in the Longman Pronunciation Dictionary (1st, 2nd & 3rd editions).)

@@jacobstc Thanks for that. 4. Do I have DRESS in the 2nd syl of 'Manchester'? Or SCHWA? I really can't tell, but it's more like DRESS. Can you help me to listen to it? 5. I think I have FLEECE in the 3rd syl, right?
@jacobstc

Upon listening carefully to your video again, I found that you made three more subtle errors: 10. You pronounced "extraordinary" with 4 syllables, not 3 syllables. A syllabic /n/ counts as one syllable, which is what you have articulated. 9. In the 2nd phonetic syllable of "question", the /t/ sound (as part of the affricate) following /s/ is not aspirated, yet I heard your aspiration. 5. The vowel in the 3rd syllable of "presentation" is not /i:/, the Fleece vowel.

@SimplyVoiceEnglish
@SimplyVoiceEnglish 2 жыл бұрын
Removing the y bit is a good start, but there is much more to go. Cantonese 耳 has a short super tense vowel, while 'ear' has a long lax one (which doesn't exist in Cantonese).

7. Buffet, 你说的是法文音, 但英美人士一般說 拔-fei, 唔知點解港人會讀成 po-fei, 很可能是被唔識又亂講的電視藝員和電台DJ誤導, 還有26個字母連很多大學生都讀錯,最明顯是個 Z(常錯讀為 易-sat), 希望多些出片,讓港人學好英文
@mxxxyxx01
@mxxxyxx01 2 жыл бұрын
其實主播讀既buffet的確係英式發音,重音放嚮第一個音節,大部份英國人都係咁讀,佢讀得好正宗。而你講果個“拔- fei“ 係美式發音,亦係接近法文發音,重音放嚮第二個音節。主播而家教緊英式發音,所以佢讀得好正宗。

@SimplyVoiceEnglish
@SimplyVoiceEnglish 2 жыл бұрын
Yes, American pronunciation differs significantly than the one I discuss in the video. And here are my observations: WhatsApp: On top of the vowel in 'app', people tend to have /s/ instead of /ts/ Excel: the second syllable is usually pronounced with a low rise, which is not the typical way to do it in English.

Most of the time, a word would have more than one pronunciation but for the learner, it would come handy when they choose something that's common and consistent with current pronunciation trends. buffet: Most speakers are aware of its French origin, so t is silent in both General American/British (SSBE) accents). resume: In GA 'yod dropping' is more extensive and 'resume' is no exception, so it's 'rizoom' rather than 'rizyoom'

The phonetic transcription of "pronunciation" as presented in the Longman Pronunciation Dictionary takes the following forms, each accompanied by an interpretation: a) [prə ˌnʌns i 'eɪʃ ən] => [prə+ˌnʌn^+si+'eɪ^+ʃən] b) [prə ˌnʌnts i'eɪʃ ən] => [prə+ˌnʌn^+tsi+'eɪ^+ʃən] c) [prə ˌnʌns i 'eɪʃ n̩] => [prə + ˌnʌn^+si + 'eɪ^ +ʃn̩] d) [prə ˌnʌnts i 'eɪʃ n̩] => [prə + ˌnʌn^+ tsi+'eɪ^+ʃn̩] Further, each of the four transcriptions contains [i] which is actually an expedient symbol to stand for any vowel lying between /ɪ/ and /i:/.

Language is dynamic, not static. 意思要語言是不斷演化. 沒有所謂正不正宗. I.e.
