Apart from being way to long since a video was uploaded , I finally managed to reach 10,000 Subscribers!! A mere drop for many channels , but for a lonely Aussie guy modelling US railroads .....it's not too bad!
Life gets in the way at times , and as my 20th year of shift work gets closer, you realise how it takes a toll on you ,and you need to keep healthy and rested. Only a few days after filming this , I was in bed with the dreaded COVID 19 , and even after a week I'm still not back to normal, but getting there....no wonder I thought I looked worse than usual in the footage!
Anyway , a HUGE thank you to all the long term viewers and Subscribers , and a warm welcome to my new watchers.
Take care and look for more videos on the way soon.
Gregg.

There's many builders and building suppliers playing games in the construction industry. Greg your a bugger aren't ya!! Really thrown the spanner into the works to my lighting plans for my expansion. Your right, it does only come from one direction which so many people tend to forget, and then light is totally different on days that are really overcast. Same goes with night lighting of the layout for night operation, some over do the brightness on the layouts, when in actual fact lot of street lighting in particular, has a specific formula on how bright and how much brightness there should be on the streets, and buildings for that matter. Some over do the brightness that lights up the whole layout. It's challenging to get it right, lucky enough I got it almost right.. Just need to dim the computer screen down a tad.

It crazy how prices have gone up especially building products. I like the cardboard house, where the layout going to be? If prices don't go down, maybe you need to make the new house with cardboard, hopefully it doesn't rain. (LOL) Looks great. Still waiting for the tunnel portal video, since you have the spare time (LOL). I never really thought about shadows, thanks for the insight. Can't wait to see how you do it. Congregations on 10000 subscribers, I remember when you had under 500 subs, time flies. Hope it stays cool down there, summer been mild here in Nebraska. Cheers from Terry in Nebraska. Congratulations Gregg on your 10K subscriptions and the great explanation of lighting, most people light their layouts up like christmas trees. My Daughter lives in the Barossa Valley and has been hit hard by inflation, as we all have in Aus, we moved 6 months ago to a more afforable location but the inflation bug has caught up with us. Have you ever considered becoming an owner builder (with your talent) you could save quite a bit without those @###$#@ builders. I believe you can do a TAFE course to get a Owner Builder License. Good luck with the move. All the Best Gary.

Hi Greg. In an older video on turnouts you mentioned the flexibility of peco turnout oint blades. I have a large radius on my layout which can often flex and cause the leading wheels of my Proto E9 to climb over the curved point blade. Have you got any wise comments you could make to alleviate this problem? Also had a curious one where the curved stock rail on a scratch built turnout actually snapped between two PC board sleepers it was soldered to. Have you ever come across that type of incident in your time in the hobby? It only took a dab of solder to fix it but caused a continuity problem until I found it. Glad it was not on the main line somewhere or it could have taken some time to locate. The stock rail piece was only about 12 inches long so it is debatable that it was an expansion issue. Keep up the good work!
@FishplateFilms
@FishplateFilms Жыл бұрын
Hi Roland, Thanks for watching and for the kind comments. I was probably talking about Tillig turnouts, they are a bit flexible and you can bend them slightly to fit , but the Peco ones do have flexible "switch rails" or blades. I would make sure the tip of the switch rail is housed correctly , and that the turnout is perfectly flat with no bumps , and securely laid. If the E9 is the only loco giving issues , I would check the wheel gauge on all the axles as this can lead to derailments . Expansion travels along the track, and if you don't have sufficient gaps, it will go until it finds the weakest link, which could be the solder on your turnout! If you have large temp swings, you need gaps in the rails to allow for this. Hope this helps? Cheers Gregg.
@rolandhersom239
@rolandhersom239 Жыл бұрын
Thanks Gregg for the reply. The problem with the E9 is that it is a 6 wheel bogie and the intermediate and trailing wheel sets are supporting the weight of the loco but the downward pressure caused by the gearing, forces the rail to twist downwards while the other two sets of wheels are still coming to the point blades if you know what I mean. It caused me to tear my hair out trying to discover why it was derailing at a facing point set about a complete circuit of the track further on. You could go round and round a dozen times with no problems and then it would happen when you got to this other point. One day I saw it derail on the peco in question and discovered that, unless it rerailed itself on either of the 2 trailing points which follow that one, the leading wheels stayed off. You can't see they are off due to the brake gear on the side frame and they are being held against the outside of the rail head by the other wheel sets and the end float of the axles is allowing the side frame to look as though there is nothing wrong. Four wheel bogie locos are not having a problem because of the shorter wheelbase. I live in Brisbane and would like to know if there is any way I could phone you as I have some other modelling ideas I have developed which you may be able to share on your channel. Cheers Roland
@rolandhersom239
@rolandhersom239 Жыл бұрын
I forgot to explain that the wheels are coming off half way along the point blade, not where the blade meats the stock rail. Roland.
@FishplateFilms
@FishplateFilms Жыл бұрын
@@rolandhersom239 Hi Roland, have you measured the wheel gauge yet? Is the turnout level ? I have dozens of 6 axle units and they all run fine through curved turnouts. Is the truck damaged? I had a warped truck on a Kato Dash 9 , and it took me weeks to find it? SIt the loco on a flat surface, not rail, and see if the truck is resting on one point instead of all the wheels. The loco will not cause the switch rail to move, if it's climbing over the rail , there is a wheel issue. Try running the loco backwards and see if it derails , if it goes through on a facing move backwards, then it's the leading truck /bogie that's the issue! Gregg :-)
@rolandhersom239
@rolandhersom239 Жыл бұрын
@@FishplateFilms Hi Gregg, loco checks out ok. If gentle downward and side pressure is applied to the point blade there is visible movement between the stock rail and the thinner part of the moveable blade until it contacts the stock for its entire thinned length. As the blade rolls slightly towards the stock rail it naturally creates a sloping outwards situation which ,of course would encourage the wheel to slide upwards. I am going to try some careful bending to see if I can get more support along its length for the blade by the stock rail. Short of replacing the point, I can't see any other alternative. Thanks for your time you devoted to make suggestions. Cheers, Roland. PS, if you want a good cheap and easy way to make your own static grass don't hesitate to get in contact. You can make it by the bucket load.

Hi Gregg its been a while , I was wondering how progress was going with the new digs . Thought you might be interest in a KZbin channel called Boomers Dioramas ,in just 6months of watching his tutorials my scenery techniques have improved 100% . I highly recommend him as he is well qualified has a background in film set product and a great guy to talk to very engaging an excellent teacher , keeps it simple and cost effective. He has a very good understand of light and shade some what similar to what you have been talking about but he also uses his air brush to make scenery really pop eg static grass and buildings . I've tried a few of his techniques and they have turned out perfect . Keep up the great work good to hear from you again .

Nice to see you again Gregg! Always nice to have a catch up. Same here in the UK regarding building costs, some prices for timber etc have doubled over the last year. Like you I am a little sceptical regarding the true reason for the price hikes - prices were hiked long before the issues with Russia and it's fuel, and I struggle to see why the pandemic should have had such an affect on basic building materials. I think we are all hoping the prices come back down to a more normal level soon, because if they are being kept artificially high, and everyone hold off on their building plans because of that, the suppliers will soon have to drop their prices. Crazy times indeed. Hope the situation improves for you soon. In the meantime enjoy the birdwood sub!
