Nick Laufenberg joins Jimmy to discuss the effect of rifle cant on accuracy at long range. If you’ve ever wondered why some people put bubble levels on their riflescope and whether or not it’s just to look cool with some extra range bling - here’s your answer. Spoiler alert - just a little bit of cant can absolutely cause you to miss! Nick brought charts and specific examples to show you exactly how important a level reticle (notice we didn’t say rifle) for your shot is. Stay tuned for Part 2 of this same conversation as it naturally transitioned into the question - “How should I actually go about leveling my riflescope when I mount it??”

It confuses me how your channel isnt more popular and why there are low views on the videos. I find them very informative and usefull knowledge.

'Tis the mystery of the ages. I am a complete fan of Vortex Optics. I have the Crossfire II 3x-9x / 40 mm BDC (second focal plane, of course) scope. Two of the Diamondback Tactical 6x - 24x / 50 mm (FFP with Christmas tree reticle in MOA) scopes. The 1300 yard laser range finder. The Crossfire II came on the first rifle I bought. The Diamondbacks I bought from Optics Planet. However, it turns out that my nearest gun store has a range of Vortex, from binos to the Diamondback Tactical with the next step down in range. (I like that 6 - 24 x because I can use it for hunting and long range.) Funny thing is, these guys spend almost no time trying to "sell" Vortex products. I have been binge watching during snowmageddon here in Texas and all they are talking about is the interest of the shooting sports, hunting, use of equipment. They might mention a model name but it is more about the actual function of the scope (long range, or low power close range, depending on use) then constantly hounding people to buy Vortex. And I appreciate that. And the fact that they make really good optics that the budget guy can afford. That's the other thing I like about the Diamondback Tactical. It is within my budget and does everything I need. I could spend more for expensive gas and zero stop. But those are not needed. Certainly not for my hunting needs.

I really appreciate that he brought up how the main issue is not that your rifle and scope are perfectly leveled together but that the primary issue is your reticle is level to earth.

Its relatively simple if you cant your rifle say 30* but the scope is zero vertically to naturally gravity.. the projectile is launched from the bore exactly the same an cannot come off track from the reticle unless there is deflection or wind to interfere.

Great video. I was a little perplexed when you both started talking hi/lo angled shooting rather than canted but you picked it later.

Recently, when I zeroed my scope, when tacking up my target (with a grid pattern) I brought along a small level along. Found out shot placement stayed in the XY plane.

After watching both videos....... I still don't understand how the rifle and scope don't have to be level together. If you raise the rifle to shoot 800 yds, as in Nick's example, and your pieces aren't in line..... wouldn't the rifle be at a different angle than the scope...... causing a rifle cant???
