In Finland we used to have this lovely cartridge called 7x33 Sako. It was chambered for Sako L46 after WW2. Its basically 9mm case elongated and necked down to 7mm. It was mainly used for capricaille, grouse and other small animals. Supposed to be very accurate, but quite low velocity 750m/s ish. But It would make a great PPW caliber nowdays.

@@edwardhoward4708 Somebody should bring it back but do away with the proprietary bs with the rim. When they did all the engineering and production for it, they kinda one-upped themselves too soon with the DPMS GII. Remington & DPMS belonged to Freedom Group at the time, so Remington did all the design work and testing on 30 RAR, while DPMS was doing their clean sheet work on the GII. GII was a small frame 308 that takes standard SR-25 mags.

Remington has to be the most dysfunctional company in history. They have botched more amazing cartridges than seems possible. They single handily brought forth the two best cartridges for the AR-15 at the time and botched them both. The 6.8mm SPC, botched the chamber design and dropped it like a hot potato for the .30 RAR which was incredible in an AR-15 and then didn’t support it either. The wildcats that could have been made from the .30 RAR and its bolt head in the AR for hunting would have been phenomenal. Remington botched the .280, 6mm Remington, 6.5 Rem Mag, .350 Rem Mag, 8mm Rem Mag, 6.8mm SPC, .30 RAR, .260, .35 Whelen, and the list goes on… All of these cartridges had better performance than anything around at the time of their introduction and Remington always found a way to screw jt up or not support it.

So many thoughts running.... I built a 300 Whisper AR in 2000. The 30 RAR was made for Remington at the DPMS plant, it had a proprietory bolt head and extension as well as handguard. Much like the hybrid CMMG. Folks were running 6BR in AR's with modified bolts since you had to shave the carry handle off an A2 upper and graft on a pic rail, bolts failed all the time because they were so thinly machined. Great Stuff again Guys

Ryan is right about the bolt face size. This is what I found on wiki. The rim size is .492 in and because the round generates 55,000 psi, Remington opted to use a .308 rifle bolt in a 5.56-sized rifle for increased case support.[4] The rim was widened from the .473 in of the parent case to prevent the use of a weaker .450 Bushmaster bolt with this cartridge. With a 150 grain bullet, the round travels at 2,575 feet per second (fps).[5]

Fresh out of High school I learned about the .30 Remington AR, by the time I went to buy my first AR in 2009 I had already heard Whispers of the 300 and lack of interest in the 30 RAR. I settled with a standard .223/5.56 while waiting to see which one was going to win over.. I then moved onto large frame ARs, holding out whilst all of my friends gobbled up 300blks.. In 2019 I learned about the 300 HAM'R and now have 3 (2 ARs and 1 Bolt). RAR is still a very respectable cartridge, with many great merits. Hats off to those that designed and bought/built one when it was easy. Too often do crummy cartridges get pushed so hard to survive, while some of the greats slip away into obscurity. RIP RAR.

@@seth094978 7mm was done in Grendel, called 7mm Valkyrie (before Federal ever did the 224 Valkyrie). Problem with 7mm Grendel and RAR is COL limits you to 120gr basically, which is not where 7mm shines and doesn’t do anything that Grendel doesn’t already do, other than increased frontal area slap on animals. The 90-130gr .277 bullets will fit the RAR case and still fit AR-15 COL without needing a new receiver set. Hunters wouldn’t notice the difference within 200yds vs the 300 RAR though, just more marketing angles for Remington if they wanted to play in the modern cartridge/AR-15 space. This cartridge is so close to being the perfect 30 cal cartridge for deer hunting in Illinois. The case OAL is a little over the 1.400” maximum. Otherwise, it checks all the boxes. A rebirth/slight redesign of the RAR, or 30 ARC type round based off of a necked down 338 ARC would be the best option for a reasonably flat shooting 300 yard centerfire gun there.

I'm a big fan of the HAM'R, but there's really no performance comparison.. .30 RAR has a case capacity of 44gr (could probably stretch it to 45gr), where as the max I've ever gotten HAM'R brass to was 30.4gr. (that's .002" over trim length, .002" bump, WIN brass). I have a HAM'R load in my 24" barrel that will touch .243 levels of power.. But the RAR can almost run with .308. In 2007 the Freedom Group attempted to sell the hunting public a lightweight and handy AR-15 that hit like a 308! This was a combined project of Remington, DPMS, and Barnes Bullets. After 3 years it was deemed a failure and discontinued. The upper had to be widened to fit an AR-10 bolt and doesn't fit flush but hangs over the lower receiver! It feeds from the left side of a bastard 4 round magazine of which only 1 came per rifle. Ammo was 123gr UMC for target practice, 125gr Premier Accu Tip for deer, 125gr Hog Hammer and 150gr core lokt for thicker skin animals. Beautiful rifle wrapped in Realtree camo with a fluted 20" barrel. Once in a blue moon Remington will load the 150gr ammo and Natchez will have it in stock but it sells quickly.

I agree with every point Ryan made. Remington was in the middle of being screwed by Cerberus, and Remington already had a solid track record of not marketing or supporting their cartridges well enough. But this one was novel, hit a great performance envelope and was made for small frame ARs. Wish it had made it, but the market just wasn’t ready yet and Remington couldn’t overpower industry trends at that time. Timing is everything. All those things you mentioned. People bought standard AR-15 platform and chambering because "gun grabbers". The .492 bolt face vs the standard in class of .473. If I were to make one today brass would made from 450 Bushmaster or 284 Win which would be a smaller rim than the original design. With some good coming from that. .473 range bolt face is standard. If made from 284 "higher" pressures are probably "safer" since the pressure standard is higher than the Bushmaster. I don't think I have "time" to "get round to it" but it would be fun. If a gas gun, all the 450 parts should just work.

I remember seeing a Remington R-15 in 30 RAR at Dicks back in the day. It was a good-looking gun in mossy oak or realtree. I would have gotten it if i wasn't a broke college kid!

I had one and there were several issues I had with my gun. First off it was nothing more than a rebranded bushmaster rifle. I had feeding issues if I had to do a mag dump on a group of hogs. Velocities were 150fps shy of advertised Velocities but that is to be expected. Ammo was scarce when new and twice the price of .223/5.56 and 6.8spc was in the middle and you could somewhat find magazines for it. All in all it was ahead of its time and was a good cartridge.

The REM 30RAR was the first AR platform rifle I purchased. I have a lot of factory rounds, a ton of brass, and dies. It's killed deer in South Dakota, Indiana, and Kentucky. The velocity printed on the factory box is about 200 fps fast than anything I could hand load. Let me know if you need anything for a comparison or for your collection. I'd trust it completely out to 350 yards. The salesman told me I could form brass from .308 and I believed him. He either lied or was misinformed. The 150 gr Core-lokt works great. the 125s available were Nosler BT's. Both bullets have painted the snow red. I did replace the trigger. The only other change I'd make would be replace the gas block with an adjustable one. I can send you the upper and a couple boxes of ammo if you promise to send the upper and brass back and not laugh at the Redfield (new era) scope on it.

Very nice discussion. If I were to pin the failure of 30RAR on any one thing, it would be the incompetence of Remington marketing. I played with it way back then and there were a few problems. Factory ammo did not quite get to the speed Remington claimed (lots of Remington marketing was "well it works on a round cow in vacuum" type). Subsonic was not going to work since 1-10" twist does not stabilize 220gr 30cal bullets especially well. Remington announce the cartridge in 2008, but it did not hit the shelves until 2010. During that time period, AAC got 300BLK through SAAMI and Remington bought AAC (in 2009) and top brass completely lost interest in 30RAR.

DPMS was working on the GII and introduced it in 2013 if I recall. They were both under Freedom Group at the time. 30 RAR would make a great parent case for a 270 and 6.5mm versions for hunters too, though the 30 cal will have more slap.

People are still trying to do this. 30ARX is out there, people have played with 30 Grendel, etc. It still makes sense, the problem is that it has to do something better than 6.5G, 6ARC, etc in the AR platform to pick up steam. I am curious how these stood up over time as someone that has killed a 6.5G bolt before. Those had to be some thin walls for 30RAR. But I think you are right about a bolt gun application, it would have been a neat option.

I understand you can make brass from the 450 Bush master, although it's rebated 308 WIN rim size is slightly smaller. I've always felt they should've based it on the 50AE case, or the 50 beowolf case.

I’m running just about 2300 from my 18” 416R 6.5 grendel from Alexander arms 129 SST so 2800 is smokin with a 125gr 30cal. Marks right. This would be a hit with my generation mid to late 30’s gas gun enthusiasts. I’m getting 2860 barely from my 79gr (yes 79gr) in a 22” bolt 5.56. Granted TMK 77gr are pushing 2900 from same rifle. But a 30 RAR 2800fps gas gun? I’m in sign me up.

At 5:30 You talked about spicier 300blk rounds. Please check out Phantom Defenses 300blk offerings! They do a 300blk 85 gr Maker in their NAS3+ case pushing it velocity to 2920 FPS (16 in. barrel) & 2450 FPS (5.5 in. barrel). They also offer 110 and 120 gr options that are pretty fast!

It was too proprietary at the time. Just build a 30BR, easy to form brass from 6mmBR Lapua or Norma cases. Use an AR10 bolt head and barrel extension. Wilson Combat was building a hybrid AR15 that used the larger bolts and extensions for their 375 Socom and 458 Ham'r, shouldn't be that hard. 30BR will give those ballistics. I remember Huntington's in Oroville before they closed had bags of 30RAR brass, almost bought it just to have. Always thought Remington screwed up when they didn't reintroduce the XP100 handgun in the 30RAR when this cartridge came out.
