293 grain bullet should do excellent on big game ! The heaviest I’ve used was hard cast 265 grain with large Meplat ! Maybe it’s just me but I use wet news print tied up in bundles and have for years , it’s still used in tests with fellows using 45 Colt , 470 L. 480 Ruger , 460 S&W and the 500 ! Good to read their tests in wet pulp media ! It’s some fooling around but I get left over bones from the meat market and with twine tie those in with the news print bundles ! A spool of twine is still cheap , one doesn’t need to use para cord I’ve found out ! News print is at recycle boxes around town so it’s easy to obtain lots of it ! A Chrono is pretty handy to see what my revolvers actually produces for FPS ! Oh , in my .44 mag I use 310 grain hard cast , the 330 grain is next on my list to try ! now firing those 45 colt rounds out of a lever action would probably add 300 fps to the speed of the round. So the round would probably travel at 1400 fps out of a lever action. Dont waste your money on a chronograph the maker of those bullets has already done the chronograph work for you. I would just test for accuracy and damage to a live target. Also since they are cast lead bullets check your barrel for leading left behind because of how warm those loads are.

IF it does, as advertised and as the man who developed it says it does, it'll probably have something to do with his powder "blend"...which is Aria Ballistic Engineering's description. That 41 Magnum scores a Power Factor of 62. The 45 colt is Way to Heavy for Caliber. That xtra weight is. Or doing anything for you.. It scores a Power Facto of 50. In order to match the 41 Mag it would need to be going 1360 fps. Which can be done with 300 grain Ruger only loads. That TKO is a lot of nonsense. Divide the result by 7000 is suppose to equal the amount of grains of powder in a pound.?? Makes no sense.Power Factor: Velocity x caliber / by .1 = usable scale of 1-100 for most calibers. Common sense approach. Remember the 1873 original 45 colt load that the Army Originally specified was supposed to be able to shoot thru a horse length wise at 100 yards. 255 grain bulllet with 40 grains of Gunpowder. 7.5”barrel moving 900+ fps. So penetration is not a problem with lighter bullets. Velocity trumps Weight as long as you have enough weight to achieve the desired penetration. Maybe a large block of clay test ? With way jugs behind to catch the bullets. Always enjoy your videos. Good luck.
@plowboysghost4 ай бұрын
I've read that Linebaugh said that somewhere between 320-365 gr was optimum in . 45 Colt....I can't recall the exact weight . I'm quite familiar with the '73 .45 Colt vs. horse . 40 gr of 3F today can run 1000 fps from a 7.5" under a 255-gr bullet, and it's VERY effective at either 900 or 1000. 🍻
@LibertysetsquareJack4 ай бұрын
The caliber itself adds to the equation though, whether TKO or Thorniley formula. So 45 Colt nets some extra terminal power by being four calibers larger than 41 Mag: more calibers = larger meplat potential, and for given weight, a more "over square" bullet, meaning less potential to veer or tumble. The 7,000 thing is not for powder (propellant), but for bullet grain. It's simply a way of getting to what fraction of a pound that the projectile weighs. In the TKO formula the entire product is taken over 7,000, and in Thorniley the bullet weight is converted to poundage first, then factored with velocity, bullet diameter, etc. Which is another reason why caliber size can matter, because larger caliber means larger product when factored with velocity and weight. Keep in mind that both formulas are empirical, and both creators judged weight, caliber and velocity as being the factors. A formula such as Muzzle Energy or Foot Pounds, however, is not empirical. So with those, people will tend to conclude that some rounds are "too heavy for caliber," because caliber is simply not a factor at all: those formulas only factor velocity and weight. That means rounds can be seen as "too large," because they start to get diminishing returns in the velocity department.
