Mark Wiens a friend of mine in Canada sent me your video. I enjoyed it . I was born Calcutta India to poor parents who died of poverty. I lived at the end of her home. she taught me typing in another place called Shishu Bhawan. I also worked opposite the Victoria Memoral Lloyds Bank 41 chowringhee road at that time. Thanks for the video.

Thanks Delattre, its people from our state, people like Saibal Ghosh, who are and have been the traitors since the time the British ruled, the so called bootlickers of the pseudo -hypocritic, pretsension-centric, glass society that they are very fond of and think themselves to be a class above the rest. It is for men of these kinds that the most talented state of Bengal faced such enormous resistance during their struggle for freedom and receded backwards in some departments post independence.. I feel they do not even know the proper history of their country. But when it comes to sheer talent, the real quality , the true essence of things, be it people, food, education, spirituality, literature , music, football, etc., Bengal has been, and will always continue to remain a stalwart.

I'm from Bombay and settled in the U.S. about a quarter century ago. This New Year's eve I was in Bombay and we decided to take a trip to Kolkata, which has been described as a filthy city, dying city and all of that in our media. But as far as my history knowledge goes, Cal was the political, cultural, spiritual and scientific capital of India. All of our literary and scientific giants were from Bengal (East and West). Our trip to Cal was a shocking experience because reality was quite the opposite from what we had imagined. Kolkata is beautiful, clean, beautiful promenades and vast open grounds for the public. Traffic was much smoother with no traffic jams compared to Bombay. Very little garbage strewn on the street, no building debris, Lots of cleanliness that we in Bombay are not used to. Bombay is a big garbage dump so readers please don't believe anybody that tells you that it's a lie. Other than around Park Street where we stayed at the Oberoi Grand Hotel, we took cab rides to Howrah, Hoogly, Alipore, Salt Lake. All these neighborhoods were so well maintained, inhabited by decent neighbors. I'm thinking of relocating to Kolkata because BOMBAY is the most filthy and unlivable city in India. Even the people of Kolkata were so helpful and courteous and disciplined. Bombay is the dead city...or rather the fastest dying city in India. Jackson, Mississippi.

Thank you Perikaveera for this wonderful comment. I'm a Kolkatan and love my city no end. Can't ever think of living anywhere else. Everything you said is true. People have a wrong perception of this city, not realising how much worse off their cities are. No place is perfectly clean. So, people outside Kolkata especially the so-called 'BIG and developed' cities should open their eyes and look around their neighbourhoods and see the filth around them. As for Kolkata being a dead city, why is everyone flocking here to settle down and crowding our beautiful city in the bargain. We have people from all over because we are very welcoming. Rightly said, the people here are genuinely helpful and its very unlikely a woman can be misled easily if she's careful enough. Our street food is also much more cheaper than other places in India. So what is lacking here? Every place has its pros and cons. Instead of being so mean about Kolkata, people should learn to appreciate it with all its flaws and plus points. And lastly, come visit our city and see for yourself; you'll want to come back again :) Its best to come between November and February - beautiful weather during this time.

Hey Patricia, thanks for watching. It's not the best place especially for solo females, but I'd say groups would be fine. I was with my wife, and she felt a lot better in Kolkata than in Delhi. Overall I though Kolkata was quite friendly. Are you thinking about visiting?

This is a great guide to Kolkata. One of my favorite things to do, aside from what you mentioned, was to take in a cricket match at various locations throughout the city. Although cricket is popular all throughout India, I had never seen so many matches taking place in one city before.

I was born and brought up in Kolkata and now working in Bangalore. But, still (like every other Bengali) I miss it a lot. My favorite place in Kolkata is Belur Math. Very time I go home, I will goto Dakhineshwar around 4pm and then take a ferry to Belur. Enjoy the evening, listen to the 6pm prayer and take a ferry back to Dakhineswar. Its just beautiful.

Mark hats off to you for your patience in realising the city. This city has life. Being born and brought up in Kolkata, I feel blessed. I've been posted out of the state for the past two years and everytime I return I relive each day in Kolkata. If anyone needs to prepare a list of to do things in Kolkata it would take a month. Again if you want to include durga puja you need one more month to feel the essence. Thanks Mark for making so many videos on this part of India which shows you have felt the life in here. Thanks for posting Mark. It has been 24 years since I last visited Cal so your video has given me a few insights of what I can expect. You were definitely far more game than me with the street food. In 74 I had puchkas at the Victoria Memorial & ended up getting a tummy upset so I stayed away from street food on my next two visits. This visit is after many years & I am older so obviously going with a slight sense of trepidation......

Mark Wiens Your expressions were priceless when you were having the street foods. I grew up in this City of Joy, but I am sure, I give the same expression every single time I have those sinful street foods :-D

Mark, I haven't visited Kolkatta for at least about 40 years( I knew it as Cacutta and had worked for a Company there ) and after viewing your video I think you nailed it. Congrats and I guess I'll subscribe so I can view any future videos that you submit. Best wishes from Toronto Canada.
