Let’s talk about the health benefits of cacao and dark chocolate. Cacao is the raw bean that’s fermented and processed into chocolate. Cacao and dark chocolate are both loaded with phytonutrients (polyphenols and flavonols). They actually have higher amounts than blueberries or açaí berries.
There is a small amount of caffeine in cacao and dark chocolate, as well as a good amount of theobromine (a stimulant). So, if you have cacao or dark chocolate later in the day or before bed, it may keep you up.
I consume a little bit of chocolate on a regular basis, but I always consume chocolate that is organic and doesn’t contain sugar. A few brands I like are Lily’s Sweets and Choc Zero.
Cacao and dark chocolate are high in oxalates. So, if you’re at risk for kidney stones, you may not want to consume either one.
Potential health benefits of dark chocolate and cacao:
1. Decreased blood pressure
2. Increased HDL and decreased LDL (especially oxidized LDL)
3. Decreased risk of heart disease (decreased endothelial dysfunction)
4. Decreased cortisol and adrenaline
5. Decreased risk of certain cancers
6. Decreased insulin (may improve insulin resistance)
7. Decreased risk of strokes
8. Better mood and increased serotonin (it can act as an antidepressant)
9. Increased physical performance
10. Increased skin circulation, texture, hydration
11. Decreased metabolic syndrome

Part of dropping sugar out of the diet is reducing all sweetness of all foods, and over time you stop looking for anything sweet tasting. I started with 90% Lindt chocolate, which seemed bitter at first, but after a couple of weeks I tried a 100% Montezuma chocolate and that is a different animal. Now I have totally converted to 100% chocolate and like it. The 90% seems too sweet now.

Great brand recommendations! I really like Lily's! Women often experience chocolate cravings prior to their periods - maybe due to increased need for nutrients like magnesium, as cocoa is rich in magnesium, and Lily's would be a great option. It's too bad that most women try to fight against these cravings vs. listening to the body!

I'm glad I watched this video to the end. I have a kidney stone and had no idea that dark chocolate contains oxalates and that if you're at risk for kidney stones,it's not recommended to be eaten. And I've been eating it on an almost daily basis not realizing what it contained and what that can lead to. Noone ever tells you this stuff. There should be a warning label on the candy wrappers,"Warning:Contains Oxalates.People at risk for kidney stones should not consume" Just like the warning they put on soda labels warning Phenylketonurics that the soda contains phenylalanine. @Jack Neary cavities are mainly caused by sugars and acid. The higher the cacao %, the lower the sugar content although brands will slightly vary. I don't think dark chocolate is acidic or if so, a mild acidity. You'll notice with dark chocolate (especially 80% or above) it gets bitter. I love 90% dark chocolate as I'm on keto and tastes so much better as in cut sugar out. You also eat a lot less when it's dark. Long story short. I highly doubt dark chocolate contributes to cavities but oral hygiene is still very important but it won't rot your teeth like milk chocolate.

Started eating the Lily's 93% chocolate bars to supplement any chocolate cravings (usually once or twice a month) a while back because it looked like it wasn't garbage like other bars. Glad to know that Lily's is actually a well known and liked brand. Thought it was a lesser-known off brand, lol. But I do really like those bars and that they definitely fulfil that craving while making me feel confident that I did myself a nutritional service, especially since I do have a concern that I don't get enough iron in my diet.

I've started with 85% some time ago and now am at 100% cacao. Of course it's not your typical chocolate. It's quite bitter and sticky but once you've cut out most of the refined sugars, your taste buds will adapt as well. It's an acquired taste, for sure, but I like it.

It's my understanding that to block oxalates from being absorbed, you can eat calcium containing foods along with the cacao. I eat some cheese or whole milk yogurt (without sugar).

Every night I make my special hot cacao drink for my hubby & I. * 1 cup almond milk & 1 cup coconut milk mixed =2 cups ☕️☕️ * 2 tablespoons of organic cacao powder * 1 tablespoon of coconut sugar * pinch of sea salt * 4500 mg of ashwaganda powder Medium heat 5 minutes on stove, blend well until smooth, pour in cup and grate fresh nutmeg on top. So far we haven’t had a problem going to sleep after. It seems to really mellow us out, especially my hubby since he’s got a very stressful job.

I just ate 2 bars of 100% trinitario chocolate from the home of some of the best chocolate in the world in Trinidad & Tobago and giving it to my heart warrior toddler. Thing is we grow and make this an had to really search to find 100% dark as they have so many low fat and up to 70% options. So happy turns out the 100% is cheaper than the rest of them and you get even more!

Dr. Berg, do you have any information on what causes Sun Bumps on my arms when exposed to the Sun. The bumps are itchy too! As great as I eat per your informative videos' over the last couple of years, I am stumped as to why I get these Sun Bumps per say! I put a dash of Cacao in my Omelette every morning along with 40 other spices. Sounds nuts; however, I figure a dash of every spice I can find that is organic can only make me feel wonderful. It is amazing Dr. Berg thinking about all the videos you have, that just continue to teach us what we should have been taught from pre-school. I just love shopping for the good foods and reading labels. I put many things back on the shelf after seeing what they put in the product that is not made for our precious bodies! What I have seen over the last ten years is people just blowing up like balloons. I see this and my heart breaks for them, as they are lacking knowledge on food intake. Much love to you and your family! Love 4Truth!
