That does involve being robust enough in your younger years to persevere and to be able to get over disappointments and unexpected events. Stoicism is a wonderful philosophy and starts in the school playground.

As a licensed mental health counselor, the partner points are crucial. Money is one of the core factors that would be in your best interest to address early. On that note it's best to tackle your poor money habits and debt before marriage as much as possible .. you're on the right channel for that. You're setting yourself up for success that will trickle down to all facets of your life

My son is 21 and not dating yet. (Wants to finish college, etc, get on the right track.) But I’ve told him money does matter and to pay attention to a future partner’s financial beliefs or habits and to make sure they can talk about money. You want to be on similar pages with similar goals. If they can’t, that’s a huge red flag. I married so young that none of this had been pointed out to me or brought up and eventually I figured out I should probably step up and manage my household’s money bc my husband was going to largely avoid it due to stress. 22 years later and we are doing wonderfully but it required incredible responsibility and we also got a big dose of good fortune to help course correct earlier financial missteps. I hope my son will have an easier time and consider financial stability when thinking about his future and his future partner.

Great points, but I completely disagree with point 2. My wife married me when I wasn’t financially stable, but I was highly ambitious and had a detailed plan of what I wanted to achieve. She supported me financially to achieve my goals and get the business up and running. 5 years later, (post pandemic) we have a multi-site business with strong cash flow and an even stronger valuation which we hope to grow further before exit. She also wasn’t anywhere near as financially stable as she now is in her career. My wife and I have a great marriage, with a baby boy and we are earning very well now. Couldn’t be happier, and that is because she married ambitious, not rich and we supported each other. Marrying / dating financially stable may be important, but it shouldn’t outweigh other factors such as compatibility, attraction, love and emotion. Build together…

I agree. My husband and I were the opposite. I was at a low paying job and unlike you I had NO IDEA what I wanted to become. But he was at a great position and knew a lot of well placed people and saw in me things I hadnt even considered. We had a child and after our daughter was born I stated I wanted to work so we could build more. He introduced me to someone who immediately offered me a job that changed my life. From there I grew at that company, left it and got another job at another company (on my own with the own reputation I had built myself) and now not only am I doing better than ever, I make more than him 😂. Together we are building. Like you I believe we are partners who grow each other and with each other. You don’t have to marry rich, you should marry compatible and with a growth mindset similar to your own.

What I understood from her point is that you should avoid people who can't talk about money, or don't want to. or don't be that person. of course together with somebody who you love and having the mindset of moving forward and getting better will always be the best choice as long as money conversations are a normal thing, and not taboo.

Thank you for mentioning the following: saying less than necessary, the bit about mentors, and focusing on practicality. It seems like in the U.S. our work environments really promote saying more than necessary, you can only succeed if you have a mentor, and far too much focus on passion rather than practical. This leads to a very warped set of expectations for so many. And, the focus on passion rather than practical really only seems to help universities that offer absolutelty unpractical majors that result is astronomical debt for so many people.

Really great advices! On the "work from a desk" rule I would add one more: use an external monitor for your desk :) It's really an essential item even for short or medium sessions at the desk. The 4k or 5K screens are amazing, a bit pricy but they pay off quickly in added comfort and productivity.

On #3, I have my desk by my bed facing away from it. I simply work as much as I can & lie down or nap when I need to almost regardless of the time. It really works well for me. More than once I have lied down to rest & immediately had an idea because of it. Instead of a notepad by the bed I just have my full workstation ready to go at any time something comes to me.

I think this is one of my favorite videos because I could hear the excuses pop up in my head, like "my employer expects me to always be accessible by phone", but then the next question follows, "why am I choosing to work under those expectations?" or "is that really my employer's expectation or is it just conditioning?" And once I peel back the layers of excuses, I'm left with the reality that at the end of the day, no matter the answer, I still have a choice. Knowing I have a choice meets my very high need for freedom and actually helps me take action. If not for your content, I might not be having this dialogue with myself, so thank you.

I'm one of this indecisive dreamers who cannot decide on a passion. Recently, I've been coming to terms with the idea that just liking my job is enough. I'm not passionate about my job, but I'm extremely motivated to do it well and to learn new things every day. I'm sometimes jealous of people who have turned their passion into a successful career, but I also know that it's never too late to pursue a dream.
