I trained my dog myself. I watched a lot of KZbin videos of many different trainers. I thought training my dog just like everybody else would work. Boy was I wrong! She showed me a different way of training her. My dog that is. She showed me that she already knew a lot of stuff without me training her to do it. I just had to give it a name. The usual names just didn't work for her. So I had to find names that work for her. Like the word heel, she totally ignored me but when I changed it to stand, she listened. She also knows a few tricks. She sits on her haunches with her front paws in the air. I started calling that sitting pretty. She taught herself that. I never taught her. When I say stand to her, she comes to my side and she'll stand at my side. She also taught herself that. I didn't have to teach her. I just gave it a name. She likes to jump up. I just showed her that they're only specific times that she can jump up. I let her know that I'm in charge and not her. She has gotten a lot better. She knows over 30 commands and even some hand signals. I have to admit though, she's not perfect. There is one thing that I have a problem with with her and that is her loving people too much. When she sees certain people certain friends of mine and family members, she gets overly excited. If I don't correct her right away, she'll get out of control. Sometimes it takes more than a minute to straighten her out. But eventually she gets it. She just loves my family and friends so much and she loves it when people come up to her and give her attention. She's an attention w****! LOL! She's the best dog I have ever had. There are times when I think she is actually smarter than me. Best dog ever! I'll never get another breed though. I'm hooked on this breed. Her name is Tesla and she's 5 years old. I brought her home when she was 10 weeks old and started training right away. Since her breed has a bad rap, being fighting dogs, accused of being vicious, killers and horrible with children, which is all not true. She is a Staffordshire terrier AKA Pitbull. I hate the name Pitbull! She is a beautiful dog and would never hurt anyone! I think I did a pretty good job in making sure she is a good dog. At first, I believe the same stuff about what they were saying about these dogs. She's proven them all wrong. When she crosses the bridge, I'm definitely getting another staffy! She is done so much for me and she has also saved me from my grief. I had lost my husband about 8 months prior to picking her up. I thought she needed me, she proved me wrong. I needed her more. And she showed me that. Best breed and best dog ever! This was the main reason why I named her Tesla. She's smarter than me. LOL!

I will say...how the owners try fixing the problem, just made it 10 times worse Pulling on the leash harder? Does absolutely nothing When a dog is hyper focus on something, nothing is stopping them YOU got to catch them before they explode You got to distract them, BEFORE they explode Whether you tirn the other way, or put a treat by their nose, or make them sit, or squeak a toy And let them look at the dog, reward them for looking back at you without reacting This takes times, and maybe that dog is better in places where there isn't anyone walking their dogs Like a hiking trail

They just recently banned prong collars in my state of Australia, I am still amazed at how behind America is in animal cruelty laws. Cutting off dogs ears and tails and declawing cats is also banned.
@lostinpencils4254 Жыл бұрын
@Jen D. They are not considered ‘training tools’ here, that’s the difference. Of course people will still abuse animals but banning these devices definitely helps stigmatise the normalised abuse of choke, shock and prong collars. I also think you will find that Labradors are amongst the top most dangerous breeds everywhere, not just Australia but even if that was accurate it still isn’t an excuse to routinely hurt an animal to teach them to obey you.
@swimmingbird243 Жыл бұрын
Honestly from what I've seen, prong collars as well as pinch collars have been primarily used in rough cases where the dog hasn't been properly trained and the owners just let the dog do whatever it wants. Look up Upstate Canine Academy. Many times that he's used a prong or pinch collar it's just to give the correction and over time, he tells the owner it can be swapped out. It's not meant to be a permanent fix. Dogs correct each other by biting their necks and pinning them to the ground. I have a friend that owns a gsd. They don't take the necessary time with it at all and they constantly complain how the dog rips up stuff, damages stuff in their house, or how hard it is to walk the dog. My friend constantly talks about how hard it is to walk her dog on a harness. They were even kicked out of puppy classes because of how reactive the dog is. They got stuck doing 1 on 1 lessons. Their friends including myself have tried offering advice and because they were reaching out for help. They got this dog as a puppy and the dog has next to no obedience. They told me that this dog will basically tear their wrist off by how hard it pulls and there's just no restraining the dog when there's another animal in sight. They told me that they have to tie or hold onto fences just so the dog doesn't pull away. The dog has nipped at her and other people. So it's stuff like this where it's built up reactivity because of lack of training where a prong or pinch collar could help given their situation. I think we need to be really careful with what we consider animal abuse and what are tools to help correct severe behaviors. I almost feel like this is the same kind of discussion that I get into with people who don't think reptiles should have substrate. Lol
@t.22916 Жыл бұрын
I feel like it should work with normal collars to a certain extent. I don’t use pronged collars with my dogs and they are stable dogs.
@swimmingbird243 Жыл бұрын
@@t.22916 yeah it should however if you're putting in the work with training/obedience, then it's less of an issue. I know plenty of people that don't use them and it just comes down to how severe the behavior can be. As with anything: use in moderation. It shouldn't be a long term solution especially if you're working at it. Sometimes people don't stay consistent with their training and get lax about it. It really just comes down to a case by case basis.

I’m going to take a guess and say you used a pinch collar which is fine, but it’s not going to do a lot long term unless the owners are adamant about the upkeep. To get a dog like this under control, it needs to be taught that it’s attention is better put somewhere else. High energy dogs need one thing and that’s attention. Something which lack there of directly causes the issues described.

Unbelievable. Horrible. Apparently, he can only "train" using multiple pain devices. An emotional, ultra sensitive dog as the Doberman will not do well mentally after this. Can't believe the barbaric handling. This is why you NEVER do a board and train! I used to be a board trainer and every other trainer I met was an abuser. If someone uses the same one size fits all brute force method, the dog will suffer, this is not training! It's much better to do it yourself! No excuses now with so many different methods online to try. It deepens the bond and builds love and respect. No wonder there is no follow up video of the two Dobermans with leash reactivity.

@tbirds5313 Жыл бұрын
Depends on what you mean by harmful. There are methods that do inflict pain to reinforce desired behaviors such as prong collars to prevent tugging and pulling, but not all methods that can be considered harmful under its basic definition are abusive. Beating a dog into submission is abusive. I have a hunting dog and when she gets too far away and doesn’t respond to a call I lightly shock her with a shock collar and she responds immediately. I usually only ever have to do it once because of the association the animal has built with the undesired behavior and receiving a shock. I’ve shocked myself at max power on the collar to fully understand I’m doing to the animal, and to a full grown human it doesn’t really hurt, it’s more surprising than anything.
