11 Similar Verbs in Hebrew and Arabic

In this video we will be looking at 11 verbs that sound very similar in both Hebrew and Arabic. Hebrew and Arabic are both Semitic languages and while they are not mutually intelligible, they share many common roots and have similar grammar.

@@thelanguagelife7962 haha yes don't worry it happens to all of us, btw I guess I did a mistake too to get close can also means تقرب depending on the context, for example "He's trying to get close to me" here it means يتقرب (present) ، whereas in this example ""He's getting close to his destination" it means يقترب (persent), يتقرب and تقرب are the same verb they are just in a different tense. تقرب (past tense), يتقرب (present tense), I really didn't mean to make it complicated I just wanted to clarify the situation lol

@@thelanguagelife7962 "تَقرَّبَ منهُ لمصالحَ شَخصيَّةٍ" "يُحاوِلُ أن يَتقَرَّبَ من طَليقتِه مُجَدَّدًا. " taqarraba is rather used to talk about relations between people, especially one person intentionally becoming closer with another, unilaterally. You can also say تَقاربَ if it happens mutually. You could say: تَقارَبوا في وِجهاتِ النظر تَعَلُّمُ اللغاتِ يُساعِدُ على التَّقارُبِ بَينَ الشُّعوب.

@@eidlebanon5245 Yeah, that's why it's really important to recognize the word forms whether it's a noun, adjective, adverb or verb and if it was a verb you should know the form of that verb. So تَقاربَ is a useful word but you wouldn't know how to use it properly without recognizing the form of it

I am delighted to see that you have changed your channel name, it certainly represents more now what it is about. Fascinating also that you have now taken up Hebrew. I often wondered what the similarities are between Arabic and Hebrew. These languages seem to have a common origin but unfortunately are still not close enough for Hebrew and Arabic speakers to understand each other. But maybe even realising for people that their language is similar may help to accept each other and eventually to find some common ground.

In regards to Arabic, I was recently shown a nice website. You probably know it already but if not, it is called Playaling. Now that I finished Elihayi's four books I use that to progress my Arabic. I love the idea to use videos already available on KZbin and transform them into a language teaching resource.

@@thelanguagelife7962 there are two things I find particularly useful. First, that you can hover over each word and it gives you explanations and translations. And second, that the whole text is broken up into many segments that you can listen to on a loop until you have enough of them. So you don't have to stop the video and go back. They seem to add new videos every day, or every couple of days. Have fun with exploring that site and of course with all your other language endeavours.

I lived in Syria 8 years 2010-2018, you have worked hard, developing your natural talent in pronunciation, syntax and grammar. In your other videos you sound totally native Lebanese or Bilad as Sham or whatever - it's truly amazing. I studied Arabic at Princeton University 2007 and University of Bethlehem (Palestine) - and I have never met a foreigner who speaks as well as you do in Levantine Arabic... except maybe my brother John from Belgium who is still in Syria and came before me.

I used Complete Japanese, and then a bit of Japanese from Zero, and now I’m using Genki. I think I like Genki best but a lot of people recommend Minna no Nihongo. Good luck!😊

Some Israelis pronounce khet and kaf separately, but most do not. The hard H happened because of Aramaic influence on Hebrew in ancient times.

@@AaronGeller I mean the modern pronunciation compared with the biblical one, they left behind 10 vowels out of 15 and almost half of the consonants making it a hybrid language. But if you are telling me that this is a natural evolution of a language that's ok. The former pronunciation was nicer and more original than the modern. The mothern version sounds to my untrained ears a bit unpleasant compared to other semitic languages like Arabic.

@@cattubuttas4749 So here's where I politely take issue with what you're saying. We know a few things about Hebrew in the first century. First the glottal stop Aleph and the pharyngeal, Ayin, were being confused in writing. There also seems to be other consonants that may have been merging together. We also need to consider that Biblical Hebrew was not one language, but even as Arabic has dialects, so did Hebrew. We don't know for certain all the differences throughout history, but we know the famous story about shibboleth and how one tribe pronounce the s/sh differently from another. Samaritan Hebrew basically lost h, kh, and ch. Here's a video comparing Samaritan Hebrew with Yemenite and Modern Hebrew pronunciations: kzbin.info/www/bejne/qHO4ZJuAbdtklbs Samaritan Hebrew gives us an approximate idea of how Hebrew could've sounded if it never ceased to be a daily language. Some people complain that the MH "r" should be a trilled r instead. We should consider that the original English r is not the same as what was used in old English and the same could be said about the modern r in French. Phonology in language changes over time and this is just natural. I think the reason why there are people who don't like the MH r is because it sounds "European" and not Middle Eastern enough. I also prefer a trilled r in Hebrew, but that's not how most Israelis speak. There are Israelis that when we speak in Hebrew, it takes me a moment to understand them because their pronunciation is more Middle Eastern. There's a lot to discuss.

@@AaronGeller I agree with most of the things you are saying but my consideration was rather a merely "theoretical" one. What if the modern Hebrew language would have preserved its full richness in phnonemes which now for historical reasons has been crippled. When in the 19th century they sat down to decide the rules upon which grammar and pronunciation were taken for a new modern language, it was much easier to get rid of all the burden of "alien" sounds that was no more used in the diaspora, where each group had a different mother tongue. For me it would be a matter of pride to get as close as possibile to the original even if you correctly say that even the original had already started shifting under natural evolution processes. My native language is Italian but when I read Latin I try to make an effort to use the original pronunciation not the ecclesiastica (from the church), I know this is my own view and I know that many people don't even care because they don't consider it to be a serious matter. At the end of the day 2.000 years gap (when the language was mostly liturgic) would have made me to consider at least a preferred pronunciation for the modern language.

Sounds like “Hebrew” is just the multi-lingual pronunciation of “Arabic”, where apparently: Arabic R as in Ra’as (Head) is just pronounced with French accent R (gha’as) Arabic B as in aB (Father) is just pronounced with Latin accent V (aVraham) Arabic H as in Helm (Dream) is just pronounced with Dutch accent kH (kHalam) Arabic F as in Feel (Elephant) is just pronounced with Russian accent P (Pel) Arabic A as in Salam (peace) is just pronounced with Persian accent Aw (shalAwm) Arabic K as in Baka (Cry) is just pronounced with Mideast accent Ch (baCha) Arabic J as in Jamal (Camel) is just pronounced with Ethiopian accent G (Gemal)

Khalam and Bacha The kha/cha, is the same pronunciation, as the Hebrew ح and خ combined into خ. Hebrew's main accents Ashkenazi (European influenced), Spharadi (Orient) and Yemenite combined into the now Israeli Accent, which combined many letters who sound similar. * Side note: Spharadics, and I think Yemenite Jew's accent does have a rolled r like the Arabic ر. Yet in the Israeli accent it changed into غ. * Israeli: Shalom Yiddish (European Jewish German): Shalowm
