I've road in the dirt all my life. In the last few years since I've started riding the street with my DR650 enduro I've really noticed how differently people approach riding when they are starting on the street. Its almost worrying. I think to really know what your doing on a motorcycle you need to start on dirtbike. You get such a better grasp of what's going on that way.

It makes a huge difference, I have been riding dirt since I was 5 and im 21 now and I race desert scrambles in CA, I just got a dual sport last year because the ktm 350 exc is great for offroad racing but still street legal so I got my license, and because I was only 20 I had to take the class, and everyone else in the class said that I had by far the most bike handling skills, and I was on a little Honda rebel and I had never ride a street bike before then, some people in the class already had there permits and had done street riding before. The only things I dont get is why they push so hard to keep you elbows in and more importantly all 4 fingers on the clutch and brake, they kept telling me to use all four fingers and I wasn't having any problems with pulling in the clutch or stopping at max power with one finger, then I went back to my bike still one finger clutch and brake and easily locked up the front brake pulling less than as hard as I could.
@Bencwolf
@Bencwolf 3 жыл бұрын
@@Shultzchet I think the four finger thing is because people aren't as familiar with how their bike handles. When you ride dirt you quickly learn how fast your bike locks up the brakes, how much you can dump the clutch without skidding, and how much you can push turns. People just learning to ride that have never been on a dirt bike may need the control four fingers provides. I ride a klr650 and do a lot of offroad riding. My klr handles, stops, and puts power down way differently than my klx450. Both are fun and both teach different skills, especially when you ride offroad

Ballsy is the word, im a dirtbiker and I've hit 95 on a dirt road but there are still guys who fly past in a desert race, the last one I did was super dusty and you couldn't see much and the ground was super rough, the kind of chatter bumps the make it difficult to hang on but you could push it if you wanted, I was getting to probably 50mph and I was having some pretty good head shake when I relaxed my arms ever so slightly, and I was still behind the top riders by like 5 minutes over an hour race.

Tubes vs tubeless is often a subject for debate when it comes to riding off-road. Pros and cons to both - I prefer tubes. Less risk of denting the rim and then having a wheel that doesn’t let the tire hold air
@EugeneYunak
@EugeneYunak 3 жыл бұрын
@@yammienoob when he said "tubeless" he more likely meant something like Tubliss system, where you do in fact have a tube inside, just a very small one with 100psi to hold the tyre beaded, and 0-10 psi in the rest of the tyre for max traction. personally, i run mousses on enduro bikes

little knitpick. you didn't mention the spokes when talking about the tubes, instead the tubes were there to allow for lower tire pressure. Then you said, the spokes were there to be able to use the tubes. Its the other way around. you need tubes to use spokes (yes there is tubliss and mousse) and the spokes are there to allow the rims to flex.

About tubeless and tubed tires, yammie got it wrong. You should run tubeless tires on a dirtbike because that actually allows to run lower pressures. If you've got a tube in there and you're running low pressures it's gonna get pinched between the rim and tire and therefore cutting through the tube inside. Can't happen to a tubeless tire, and tubeless tires are easier to fix, just plug them.

Big fan of the soundtrack for this film :) oh, and cool bikes I guess haha I do have a new perspective of ride ability on the dirt bikes now compared to something like the tall seat on an Africa twin. So where does the dual sport fit in all if this? Is it just a “street legal dirt bike” or is it more like “a z650 with better shocks and wire wheels”?

Would've been interesting to see how spite's weight and stature affects the ergos. Another big difference street vs dirt is how soft the suspension is. When sitting on it the seat heigjt squats and lowers more significantly

@Shultzchet
@Shultzchet 3 жыл бұрын
Squat (sag) is different than actual stiffness of the suspension, both bikes are probably running about the same percentage of sag, but because their is more travel on the dirtbike it moves more when you sit on it. But I would assume the dirtbike actually has stiffer suspension because it has to hit large bumps and jumps, where a street bike is usually on a smoother surface but may come across a few potholes or dips in the road. And a roadbike suspension needs to move when it hits a small bump like a crack in the road for comfort, but a dirt bike set up for pro motocross wouldn't even budge on a small bump like that. Dirtbikes set up for Supercross or motocross arent comfortable to ride at a moderate to slow speed or while sitting down.

I started off my dirtbiking experience in the most squid missile way possible. No riding experience, but I know what the controls do, time to buy and antique YZ250 out of autotrader. No gear, no clue what I'm doing, and of course immediately went out with dudes who were very good. Not recommended.

The whole tubes thing is confusing to me as it is the complete opposite on bicycles. Going tubeless lets you run lower pressures without suffering pinch flats on tubes. It must be a volume thing.
