Hi Mate , I have this exact server and was running Truenas , Recently I wanted to upgrade a bit so I added a HBA card , 2x PCIe M.2 SSD and a GTX 1660 super ( for plex transcode ) . Now the server fan is at constant 33 - 50 % and its quite noisy in the house . If I remove the PCIe devies , the fans are back to 13% and very quiet . Is there any way to get the fans go quieter ?. Cheers . Emmany

I haven't done this myself, but I believe that there is an update to iLO4 that will allow you to set the fan speed. There is also a hack where you can swap out the factory fans for some slower, quieter ones. I have truenas also on mine but no video card. So my fans stay low and slow. Not sure what will happen when I add the third drive cage and 6 more HDDs.

I used a ML350p G8 for a while as my main server, the main issue I had with it is if ANY NON HP hardware was added it would ramp the fans, it was ridiculous, even if you put in a standard SATA SSD it would scream

I didn't experience this with SATA SSD's when plugging into the raid controller. Although I don't know if it has something to do with me using authentic hp drive brackets which I unscrewed from HP SAS drives and placed WD RED SSD's into.

You could install modified iLO 4 2.77. Search for “Silence of the fans”. Then you can manually specify the settings for each fan. My DL360 G8 runs with that for a year now without any problem.

Did those mx500 ssd ramp up the fans? I also have ml350 g8 and i'm upgrading old 600gb sas drives to ssd but have read about fans ramping up if those are non-hp drives.. Kingston promises that dc450 and dc500 series will work but i think those are bit overkill in a homelab.
@CobsTech
@CobsTech 2 жыл бұрын
Usually in HP's they will ramp up the fans if non-HP drives are detected as they don't read the temps from them properly. I downgraded the firmware of this P420i to 7.02 and the HPSAMD 8.0.4.0 driver in Windows so that the fans don't ramp up for no reason. I'm unsure if this limits any features but so far no issues.

Just checked and i'm running 6.00 firmware on p420. I might try mx500 then if you got those working and hope for the best. Ams is currently unavailable but i have to check if there is any drivers to esxi. Thanks for the reply!

I desperately wanted to do exactly what you did, I found a Proliant ML350E single Xeon for $50.00, I wanted to put in TrueNas Scale and use it as my main data vault. Unfortunately the F5 for raid configuration doesn't even load the GUI, and F10 doesn't load Inteligent Provisioning, it just tries to load an OS and loops. ;( As if part of the BIOS is missing. I have a very big and very loud paperweight ugh.
@CobsTech
@CobsTech Ай бұрын
Not a paperweight yet! Unfortunately the G8 series as a whole was plagued with nand that eventually dies except for the later revisions. What's happened is your nand is likely dead, it'll probably show up a warning in iLO too as a self test error. It means Intelligent Provisioing will be unavailable, same for the P420i/raid cards built in config utility as it uses the same intelligent provisioning system. Track down a copy of HPA Bootable SSA. It's basically a live linux USB version of the raid config utility. Alternatively, if you have a Windows to Go USB, boot that, install the HP SSA config utility on to that and then you can configure your raids as normal. If that's too much, it might be worth getting a HBA for it, such as the HP H200 and then you won't have to worry about raids at all or the nand being toast. Hope this helps :) Have been meaning to make more videos but haven't been well enough the past few months and had some other things come up.
@jacquesredmond
@jacquesredmond Ай бұрын
@@CobsTech I found the the HPA SSA, but not a bootable form. Windows to Go was removed from Windows 10 and is no longer available from Microsoft's site, so I ordered an HP 200 from Hong Kong (sigh), no instant fix for me. LOL. I also have an HP ML310e Gen8 V2 that works perfectly, now I have to worry about that one going blink in the future with the NAND? (CRY). This is all supposed to be for a NAS and reliability...just insane. Out of desperation I bought a DELL PowerEdge T310 server to have a backup of my data on another NAS box. LOL.
@jacquesredmond
@jacquesredmond Ай бұрын
@@CobsTech Update on your suggestion. I ordered the HP H200 and the fans went nuts, only settling to mid, which can be heard throughout the entire house, but IT WORKED... I went though all the BIOS settings to use minimum power to try to calm the fans down, no luck. I removed the H200 and the fans were so nice and quiet. It seems a simple expansion card (with just a single 500GB HD to test things) made the fans go crazy. I have to say, I am really not liking HP... I have the ML310e Gen8 V2 and now the ML350E, they are so... "precious" and picky. When I had these issues with the HP, I bought a Dell Poweredge T310, it is a TANK, I bought it from Goowill for $19 plus $8 shipping, plugged it in, installed TrueNas Scale, popped in four 4TB SAS drives, it has been a rock for the past month. I like it so much I bought ANOTHER as an emergency spare. LOL

Hi, do you have a link to the correct HP documentation for this server? I obtained one of these and turned it into a NAS media server, but it came with a SFF drive bay and only 600GB of storage. I'd like to install a second drive bay for LFF drives, but I'm not sure how I should proceed. Any help is much appreciated!

Great overview. I bought one of these a few years ago at a thrift store for $75 with no ram and only one drive cage, no drives. It did come with 2 processors though, which was nice. Since then, I have scrounged together some ram sticks, another drive cage and more drives than I have slots for. More RAM is on the way, and I am trying to find a LFF cage that isn't crazy-expensive now. Still working on this thing. My plan is to run a media server, my security cameras/DVR, and some home automation. With all that running, it still stays quiet except when booting. Then it sounds like a jet taking off.
@CobsTech
@CobsTech 2 ай бұрын
Haha I know the feeling of them being jets when they first turn on, though, they do go nice and quiet after. This one's stayed mostly the same except I recently upgraded the RAM to 64GB too as it was running a little low. Curious what you're going to use for security cameras, I previously used iSpy64.

Did you ever find those cables for the gpus? On a side note hp documentation says you can daisy chain the hdd backplanes as long as the the chain begins and ends at the controller so you don't need sas cards to do that(though I can imagine it would be faster if you did use multiple sas cards for the backplanes)

JB Weld Epoxy Resin or something similar might be strong enough to glue the PSU handle back on. Would be worth keeping as a spare backup.

Firstly thankyou for sharing your knowledge and love your channel ... I have a conundrum I recently got hold of 2 HP ML350p G8 servers for a steal (100quid) .... So before I go making a complete mess of things and installing totally the wrong things I would like to ask you what do you feel I should do with them as I would like to get it sort of right from the start ... Thanks in advance

Completely your choice, if it’s your first time getting into the whole server world you ideally want to choose the OS you want to install and really just learn from there, whether it’s Windows, Linux or even BSD. Currently this server runs Server 2016 and holds 3TB redundant SSD and nearly 36TB of HDD storage. If you have two of them it might even be worth learning clustering. I’ve been debating making videos on it but longer videos can be quite difficult to watch I find. Shout me if you need any help though, would love to help out :)

@@sonicraft9996 After resitting English and getting it up to a C along with my other subjects, I went straight from High School into an apprenticeship for an IT Firm where I'm still at today and with what I've earnt built my current channel on, nerdy stuff mostly but it's fun nonetheless. I think with the English GCSE's, it's mainly spending the time for planning during the exam; having to write long stories and stuff can easily go down south if you begin to run out of time and panic which is where I messed up.

Hi, for an ML350p G8, They're worth about $100-120 maximum depending on spec and config. If you find one with a lot of RAM, maybe a little more. For ML350e G8's, I'd say a maximum of about $60-90. They're older kit now unfrotunately.
