A few words about this bridge: The bridge was built before the height standards; it's grandfathered in from a legal perspective. The road cannot be lowered because of the sewer line running under it, and the bridge cannot be raised because it would be too disruptive to the trains running over it. In other words, it's stuck that way. If you're gonna whine about it, try whining about the drivers who are too f'in stupid to read the signs.

***** Jim Heckel any bullshit excuse to give the government a free pass for the horrible damages they cause will do for you, right?
@mateuszmattias
@mateuszmattias 9 жыл бұрын
Michiel Van Kets Here you blame the government (which one b t w?) for causing damage. What you wrote in a few other remarks sounds a bit in the libertarian vein, yet all of a sudden in the case of this privately owned bridge (property of the 100% commercial Norfolk Southern Railroad Company) you seem to find that the government is at fault for not intervening. Do you mean that now the authorities SHOULD force a private company to rebuild their property at their own cost, but that otherwise all the government does is causing damage? I can't help feeling your views on "government" make your statements a bit contradictory...

mateuszmattias whatever man ... how you manage to think that supporting a bunch of psychopaths is a good idea ... I'm not going to argue with you;' obviously you don't care about right or wrong, all you care about is avoiding your own brain from functioning properly ... shame is an unpleasant feelings, but a very positive one; it's how we learn! embrace the shame instead of betraying yourself!

Michiel Van Kets I don't know why you insult me, you don't know anything about my intellectual capacities; all I pointed out was that I think your're being a bit self-contradictory. Either way, I'm not a fan of too extensive governemt in any way, but if you basically makes a case that if authorities do this they're wrong, if they do that they're wrong, and if they don't do anything they're wrong too, then I think your case loses a bit in credibility. That's all.

Steve, the catch is that since the bridge belongs to the railroad company, they would be expected to pay for it, which is not a fair shot. Add to that, with today's bueracracy there would have be an environmental impact study, inspections, and the city would have to (at various times) shut down that street as the bridge goes up. This is why in so many communities the railroads (viewed as the bad guys in these cases) won't change anything unless absolutely "no choice" necessary. Even paint stripping and repainting a steel girder bridge is ridiculously expensive now. As far as the railroad here is concerned this bridge functions just fine, so the railroad has no reason to spend the six or seven dollar figure to replace it. Add to that the line, which is active would have to close down temporarily.

@@lamebubblesflysohigh It sounds like another calculation which can complicate things, especially if you or someone else are not blessed with big floppy feet like me. To each his own, I guess. I really appreciate KZbin videos which use BOTH measurements so they can be equally comprehensible to everyone. Some of the non-American made videos will verbalize the metric during their presentation but put the American measurement somewhere on the video, which I find very helpful. Some presumably American made videos do the same think in reverse, which is fine with me. To be fair, in these 11ft-8in videos I don't think much about the exact height, I just watch the destruction :)

My favorite bridge I have loved since I was about 4 yrs old - it is a can opener as well at 12"2". The Kemnay bridge in Manitoba Canada. Oh man the accidents we have seen there over the years! YOU SHOULD SEE THE WAY OVERBOARD WARNING SIGNS !!! Flashing coloured lights, HUGE coloured signs, flashing lights in your eyes, and so so much more, all starting at least a mile away, and they STILL HIT IT!!!

+ Ritesh Nair - I don't agree with that. It's a public road. Why impede someones freedom of choice? I think a clear warning sign is sufficient. Then people can make their own decision to risk it or not. If they cause damages, then they must pay for the damages, as they are responsible for them. Same with cigarettes. I agree that each pack should show clear warnings about the health risks, but I don't think they should be banned. Freedom of choice of the most important aspect to the citizens of any developed country in my opinion.

+Dan Coulson It is a public road and hence the right of public should be protected from people who do not have sufficient grey cells inside the skull to make a logical decision. It is not just the damage that happens to the truck but the associated effects as well. That could be the shortest route for an ambulance to get a sick person to the hospital which now gets blocked because someone thought 11'9" truck will fit through a 11'8" clearance. Cops could be used in more productive areas (I know, I know) than access and use resources to remove the trailer debris. It could be a car right behind these trailers that gets hurt because he decided to that. So, it goes beyond just the trailer. Many parkways allow only passenger cars on them, shouldn't be different here. Public amenities are for public to use, not abuse.

As a Dutch civil enginerer this hurts me. Rising the brigde is not an option but lowering the road is. From the Q&A of the site ''Can’t the road be lowered? That would be prohibitively expensive because a sewer main runs just a few feet below the road bed. That sewer main also dates back about a hundred years and, again, at the time there were no real standards for minimum clearance for railroad underpasses.'' In the Netherlands there are no bridges like this because we think before we place. This is a good example of cheap and fast. We need a bridge just because, so dont make it expensive. Even so, the bridge is well constructed, but with so many hits it will collapse with a heavy train on the wrong moment. I wonder what happens if a big truck hits it while a heavy train goes over it.

Detecting a whiff of European disdain for North America, compounded by engineering credentials here. The "...think before we place..." comment, tell me were Dutch engineering firms forecasting taller vehicles 100 years ago? Really, there are no outmoded constructions left in Europe? Please, I happen to know that there are. The problem here is that this road seems to have become an option for traffic of this height, to be on it in the first place. Probably better to build another road somewhere to take heavy traffic, or to bar tall vehicles to eliminate the risk of this very entertaining problem from occurring.

How is it that they don't have drag chains/bars above this road? The height on the sign isn't the height of the sign, but the height of the lowest point on the under side of the bridge. They could elevate the sign so that it sits 15 ft above the road, it would still read 11 ft 8in tall bridge.

beast0382 True but it has been around 85 years since bridges over vehicular roads were built under 13 feet of clearance in the US, with 16 being common for anything post 60s. So it is actually pretty rare for clearance to ever be an issue for vehicles designed for US highway standards. Generally only place this ever comes up is very old train bridges or pretty historic bridges or tunnels, even in those cases many cities have resolved the issue by when the road has major maintenance they will go ahead and dig the road down inches to feet to get the clearance of modern semis and the style cargo van seen above need. The fact it is 11 ft 8 in is probably because the city took the cheap route when doing maintenance at some point and just added a new surface layer of asphalt over the old road, which if you look at a lot of the rentals trucks, buses and semis. That 4 inches was the difference between it being a non issue and shearing the top of the vehicle off.

beast0382 Should know the height... blabla, BULLSHIT!!! First of all people can be driving one thing on day A and another on day B, not only that this video clearly shows that drivers are not aware that the bridge is too low, does that mean they are idiots or reckless? No and by the number of incidents you can see this is far too common and could have many factors at play why the drivers collided with the bridge. A common sense solution is to acknowledge that this traffic situation is dangerous and accommodate to the drivers, instead of playing the blame-game on your self-righteous horse. In the aircraft industry they don't take chances like these and don't leave it up to the captain to decide if they are over-speeding or stalling or whatever else, they make sure the captains knows the problems ahead of time with all the bells and whistles possible and they will try to accommodate and eliminate reoccurring pilot-errors because they acknowledge humans are not always aware of the dangers around them and in certain scenarios even more so. The goal is to reduce the potential points of failure

The municipality should have placed some kind of collision swing bar at the height of the bridge, well in front of the bridge so that over height vehicles would hit it and hear that long before they destroy their vehicles hitting the bridge. Humans aren't perfect, which is why the world is full of other safety and preventative measures.

There's actually a flashing light warning system that's triggered by a height sensor a block or so before the bridge. You can see the flashing warning lights on the bridge.
@davidgatwood776
@davidgatwood776 9 жыл бұрын
The problem is, most people are likely to assume that such warning lights are flashing all the time. That makes them mostly useless unless you already know that those lights mean you're too tall... which is to say that they're very useful the *second* time you see them. :-) What *might* be effective is a *red* light and a giant sign that blinks the words "TOO TALL FOR UNDERPASS". But even that isn't guaranteed.
@superdau
@superdau 9 жыл бұрын
David Gatwood You have truck drivers that are inattentive enough, they ignore multiple warnings that they won't fit. What do you think will happen if a car in front of them suddenly stops, because the car driver reacted to the red light? Many accidents where not only one stupid driver gets hurt, but maybe multiple uninvolved people.
@Xezlec
@Xezlec 9 жыл бұрын
Just like everything else suggested here, that was investigated and doesn't work. There's a turn immediately prior to this that many large trucks need to make. So there's nowhere to put a swing bar that wouldn't hit some trucks that aren't going under the bridge.
@davidgatwood776
@davidgatwood776 9 жыл бұрын
Which is solvable by making the bar robust enough that trucks can hit it without damage. That or make the traffic light be "One car per green" like a metering light, and have a "right turn only" if the vehicle is overly tall.
