Hi, Matt! I really respect your “can-do” attitude. You are WAY more willing to dive into the deep end of engine rebuild than me. Your philosophy on metal work “beat to fit, paint to match” really inspired me to tackle all my body panel issues, but engine block stuff is way beyond my level. Like you said, you could invest the time to heighten your already high level of expertise, but at the end of the day is the time needed for that learning curve and trial and error worth it? No shame in tapping into the skills of someone that has already done the time to get your Bronco where you can really enjoy it. Good luck! Looking forward to seeing the real oil leak culprit!

It's a frustrating problem for sure, but as an observer quite fascinating. I'm learning a lot.

When the top of the pistons show up clean like that, that is oil wash. Valve seals or valve guides I would say. Also, since you did not bore the block, that is showing taper and should not be polishing the cylinders with the skirt. One more thing, if a compression ring in top land is switched with the 2nd ring, you will still have good compression, but there will be a lot of oil getting passed the rings. Unfortunately this means you need to have that block machined, no piston and rings at least. Now rod bearings as well. Basically a new build. Have the machine shop do the machining and bring it home and build it yourself.

Yup, that's the next step. Machining and a professional build.

I thought water also clean the tops like that?
@andrewthompson24483 ай бұрын
A clean piston top would indicate coolant (think steam clean). Signs point to warped heads or warped engine deck (block). Get a straight edge and some feeler gauges and see how much warp you have on the deck and heads.

I tend to agree. Time to bring in the pros.

i thought there were at least usually witness markes of fluid transfer across the surfaces . that said would be crazy to not check it anyways

YIKES! You went there…😜 With so few miles (was it just 1200ish?) those cylinder walls shouldn’t look like a 100K motor…sure points at ring/cylinder seal troubles (and do I recall she was also way down on power? - sorry too ‘lazy’ to refer back to the videos). Still difficult long distance T/S-ing but I’m thinking bore inspection/measurements are in order here, which I believe someone else has also suggested…🤓. I don’t think new heads will fix it…🤬

You are right. I think I'm just going to have someone build it. Some skills I just lack the interest to invest in.

How about ring end gap?

Also the orientation of the connecting rod bearing. Chamfer should be facing away from center crank rod journal. To out side.

Hey Matt, I tend to agree that you would see oil in the intake runners if this was a pvc issue. Your oil is in the exhaust and I would expect to see equal wetness if this was an intake issue. Your cylinders should still have hatching even in the areas of the piston boss with no mre miles than you put on. I dont think they should be that worn. I'm starting to suspect that you have sealing issues with your rings. I cant remember did you have the engine bored? Id chech the suspect cylinders for bore size and compare to engine specs. Your bores may have too much tapper? I also like the comment of an intake leak from a bad seal from under the intake. I beleve your issue is ring and cylinder related. I'll be anxiously waiting for other comments to hear other opinions.. Tim
@MattsGarage3 ай бұрын
Hi Tim. No I didn’t have it bored. I agree it’s looking like a bottom end issue. Maybe time to bite the bullet
@timberry96253 ай бұрын
Matt, I think you just need to send the block off and have machine work done on it. You can still assemble it yourself! Don't get discouraged! Your a talented guy! Ive seen you tackle bigger problems than this!

I'm no engine builder either but from what I've seen in my 75 302 block that seems like way too much carbon for the short amount of miles on your rig. You are either running way too rich or the carb/head is ingesting some kind of aerosolized oil. I would check play in the valve guides and also maybe look at the carb for any traces of oil being sucked in. The leak by the back of #4 seems very strange as well, perhaps the head by the oil return is cracked and only lets oil by when it reaches operating temp but that would only affect #4 and not explain your carbon issue. The carbon issue on all cylinders kind of points to your carb or intake pulling in some kind of oil in a suspension. Maybe check the bottom of the intake for a crack or hole?
