I'm from Mexico and I've been learning Greek on my free time but the question from my family and friends is always the same: "why are you learning Greek? It's not going to help you in your professional career. You should focus on getting your English certificate or start with French or Chinese.” My answer is always the same, I just love Greece. That's been my motivation until now 😅

1. I am learning my 5th language (Greek). I don't have any certificates. It's more important to use them. 2. I have been learning languages all my life: you are never finished! 3. I am 67 - there's still time! 4. Some languages are harder than others for me but it may be different for you... 5. I speak languages for communication with people I like - not for a piece of paper 6. Some languages attract me more than others 7. Use all possible methods and resources in parallel for a more immersive experience and more senses for better retention 8. Do not be worried about mistakes - they will go away with time. It's more important to communicate with people. Mostly they will understand you and they will like that you are trying. Filakia apo tin Elvetia

As a Turkishman, for me learning Greek is as hard as convincing a beautiful woman for a relationship. Greek alphabet is not easy but not difficult as Arabic alphabet. In the end, i hope i will progress in Greek language as i planned.

I'm a deaf person who has been learning Greek for three weeks now. It's been a difficult journey (particularly the spelling and the accent!) but I've really enjoyed it so far. I fully agree with the points Dimitris has made in this video - learning languages is absolutely like going to the gym and is a lifelong learning experience!

To be honest, I have never thought about what it is like for a deaf person to learn a foreign language. How do you manage the difficulties with the pronunciation and the accents? Do you have a teacher to help you with that? Greetings from a German girl who is learning Greek and Danish. :)

I took Spanish for four years in high school and never used it or took it seriously, and yes, I've forgotten almost all of it. As a 33 year old I can relate to and confirm many of these myths. As a native English speaker, learning Greek from ZERO has been a real challenge; especially when compared to learning Dutch in a few months being so incredibly easy. The Greek alphabet alone was an intimidating factor, but the curiosity and desire to want that knowledge made the choice for me. In my opinion the bottom line to learning a language comes down to wanting to learn it. Committing yourself to the task and enjoying the dedication is the easiest part when you want it. Do I have any practical reason for learning Greek, absolutely not. My fervor is entirely from my love and respect of Greek culture, ancient and modern. If I had a practical reason, that would just motivate me more and perhaps direct my learning path.

I disliked learning languages at school, but I am now 38 years old and through various twists of life I now speak english and japanese fluently and french my native tongue, heading to live in Athens next year I am now starting greek and who knows next... Age doesn't matter, occasions, help from others and constancy do.

Great video! In spite of Duolingo not being the best language learning app in general, I have to say that with a language with fewer online resources like Greek it can teach you a great deal (or could, I don't know how it is now after all the changes - they took away the very helpful forum). The volunteer Greek team behind the Greek course there are awesome (and the users too)! Just like yourselves :) I have a chronic illness that affects my cognitive abilities though, so I can't "go to the gym" all the time unfortunately … and I need to concentrate hard in order to write in Greek. But I'm still learning, just a bit slower! I love Greek ❤

I haven't used Duolingo myself in more than a decade (I was interested in becoming part of the volunteer team when they were planning to publish Duolingo in Greek but was not accepted), but since then I have mainly seen people with mixed feelings about it, mostly about the choice of nonsensical example sentences.

@@EasyGreekVideos I understand that! I have mixed feelings about it myself for several reasons, but the Greek course has improved a lot. I wouldn't only use Duolingo though, that's a big mistake. When I started with Duolingo in 2016 it was in addition to a Greek class and it really helped me, and I didn't know about other resources (but through the forum there I learned about Language Transfer, and I think also this channel!) I am sorry you weren't accepted, but I'm very glad you went on to create this channel!!

I can speak 6 languages; one of them, French, needs to be improved. I don't know if i should start learning Greek since it isn't a widely spoken language around the world. It's a very listenable language though. Greetings from Turkey to Ellada.

You will not learn Greek for using it in many places in the world but if you learn Greek you will understand the world. This is not an exaggeration, and when I say "learn" Greek I dont mean learn to communicate and have basic or a bit advanced dialogues, I mean learn Greek consistently and let it be part of you life by reading literature.

I started to learn Greek maybe two times and I stopped because it is "useless" for my professional career. I always persuaded my self to learn German which could be "helpful". But after my last visit of Greece this year I realized that it does not matter because it is my hobby and I like to learn Greek language. Maybe once I can order gyros in Greece in Greek language. :)

Την ίδια εμπειρία είχα και εγώ με τα γερμανικά. Είχα μάθει ως μαθήτρια σε πολύ καλό επίπεδο και στη συνέχεια τα ξέχασα διότι δεν τα χρησιμοποιούσα. Πήγα λοιπόν ως φοιτήτρια στην Ελβετία να κάνω μάστερ και ήμουν απροετοίμαστη για το πόσα είχα ξεχάσει, παρόλο που έγινα κανονικά δεκτή από το πανεπιστήμιο γιατί είχα το "χαρτί".

1:57 If you are Greek, who born outside Greece, it's better late than never learn your language. Without it, you will not able learn history of Greece at fullest. Of course Greek historiography have own mistakes, but still. Even if you are not going move to Greece, still learn.

In England they were offering a job to teach Greek to teach English students because Greek helps them understand their own language, but it was too far and I m from NY and couldn't leave my family and go to strange place alone but sure glad I know Greek and knowing two languages , you can learn more.

@@EasyGreekVideos Ήρθα στην Ελλάδα 7 χρόνια ολόκληρα. Τότε όταν αποφοίτησα στην Κίνα, δοκίμασα μερικές δουλειές και ολες μου φάνηκαν βαρετές. Και για αυτό σκέφτηκα "γιατί δεν ταξιδέψω σε κάπου αλλού για να βρω κάτι καινούργιο στην ζωή μου?" Με τέτοια ιδέα αποφάσισα να έρθω εδώ στην Ελλάδα (και έχω συγγενή εδώ) Σε προηγούμενες ημέρες καθώς δεν ήξερα καλά Ελληνικά, μόνο μπορούσα να δούλευα σε κινέζικα μαγαζιά. Μετά ως καταλάβω την γλώσσα καλύτερα, άλλαξα δουλειές μου σε πιο ευρύα φάση. Και μέχρι τώρα ετοιμάζομαι να επιστρέψω στην πατρίδα μου εάν τελειώσει την lockdown εκεί. Θα φτάσω 30, χρειάζομαι να κάνω κάτι σοβαρό για την 'καριερα' μου 😅(πλάκα έκανα, η αλήθεια είναι ότι έπαθα νοσταλγία)

@@Jacob.D. Θα φτάσεις τα 30 εννοείς την ηλικία σου? Προφανώς είσαι πολύ νέος ακόμα!! Εγώ μπορω να πω το εξής: Αν γράφεις χωρίς βοήθεια, τότε το επίπεδό σου είναι πραγματικά πολύ καλό!! Βεβαίως, ενας Έλληνας καταλαβαίνει διαβάζοντας σε, ότι δεν μιλάς Ελληνικά ως μητρική γλώσσα...Αλλά που είναι το πρόβλημα? Εκτός αν σκοπεύεις να γράψεις λογοτεχνικά βιβλία στα Ελληνικά.....(λολ). Για να επιστρέψω στην ηλικία...εγώ κοντεύω τα 50, μαθαίνω Αραβικά 1ον γιατι μου αρέσουν και 2ον γιατί μου χρειάζονται για την δουλειά. Ναι, είναι σαφώς πιο δύσκολο από όταν ήμουν 10-15-20 χρονών αλλά αν το κίνητρο είναι μεγάλο, τότε πιστέυω ότι και το αποτέλεσμα θα έρθει αργά ή γρήγορα...

Και άλλο ένα πράγμα που θέλω να πω είναι ότι, σε φάση φωνολογία, κάποιες γλώσσες μπορεί να είναι απόλυτα διαφορετικές από μερικές άλλες. Δηλαδή, οι μαθητές από αυτές τις γλώσσες θα βρεθούν στην δυσκολία του να συνδέσουν τις νεες λέξεις της άλλης γλώσσας στις δικές τους.( Ελπίζω πως τα έκφρασα λογικά) Για παράδειγμα. Τα Ελληνικά έχουν σύμφωνα ψ, ξ, δ, θ...που δεν εμφανίζονται στα Κινέζικα, και vise versa. Και για αυτό, δεν μπορώ να απομνημονεύσω εύκολα τις Ελληνικές λέξεις που μοιράζονται παρόμοια προφορά με τις Κινεζικές. Και to top it all over, οι Ελληνικές λέξεις συνήθως έχουν πιο πολλές συλλαβές, που διαφοροποιεί πιο πολλά από τα παραπάνω...

Για μένα το πιο δύσκολο στην εξάσκηση των ελληνικών δεν είναι ούτε το λεξιλόγιο, ούτε η προφορά, ούτε η γραμματική... Το πιο δύσκολο είναι να πείσω τους Έλληνες να να μιλούν ελληνικά με μένα. Τις περισσότερες φορές, όταν ακούνε ότι είμαι ξένος, μου απαντούν κατευθείαν στα αγγλικά, χωρίς να ρωτήσουν αν τα ξέρω. Πολύ συχνά νιώθω απογοητευμένος. Δεν ξέρω τι να κάνω για να εξασκηθώ στα Ελληνικά.

Κάτι το οποίο βοηθάει πάρα πολύ - τουλάχιστον εμένα - είναι να ξέρεις ποιες γλώσσες συνδέονται, ας πούμε, και να είσαι ήδη υποψιασμένος για αυτό. Πχ εγώ ξέρω αγγλικά (μία γλώσσα που αγάπησα την χρονιά που πήρα το proficiency 🙃) και κάποιες φορές κοιτάζω άλλες γερμάνιες γλώσσες και πετυχαίνω συχνά λέξεις οι οποίες είναι ομόρριζες με αγγλικές. Πράγματι αυτό - σε συνδυασμό με το γεγονός ότι αγαπώ την χροιά τους - με έχει βοηθήσει απείρως να μού είναι και πιο προσεγγίσιμες εκείνες οι γλώσσες και πιο ευχάριστες!!🎉
