The fiddly, quiet work can make for very interesting viewing. The exact opposite of what Hollywood has been putting out for decades. Very zen stuff. Thanks Dave

Apparently, Nashville session players would omit the octave strings on the EAD course, that way you get the "jangle" but it holds tune better and you reduce the stress on the neck, so the 12 string becomes a 9 string. Now I have never been to Nashville, never mind played as a session player, BUT I started doing this on my 12 stringer waaaay back in the 80's, and for me, it works :) Love your work and videos Dave :)

Thats because nobody makes 12 string guitars with fully compensated bridge saddles, well they are very rare sady.
@patrickwashburn4501
@patrickwashburn4501 4 жыл бұрын
I think folks used to make laminated saddles like the one you replaced on this guitar, in an attempt to create some degree of compensation between the octave strings.

Hey Dave, great to see a 12-string. I hope you might have a suggestion for me? I was fixing up a 70's Hondo 12 string, but they had one of those adjustable bridges with a metal holder for the saddle and a screw at each end. Trouble was, that had all disappeared and someone had fashioned a wood saddle to fit the super wide slot. If I had fancy equipment, I could fill in the slot and route a normal width one - but I don't. I'm interested if you have any ideas? Thanks!

Could someone tell me what the humidifier is for? Obviously I know it's going to add moisture content to the wood, but what problems is it solving?

You answered your own question...
@allendesomer
@allendesomer 4 жыл бұрын
To your point: for many reasons, the guitar making industry builds guitars under the assumption that approx. 40-45 percent humidity is the sweet spot for guitars, so that's how they build 'em. When a guitar dries below that, it shrinks. I've heard people speculate that drier guitars might sound better, but if they were built that way they'd fail in a big way when exposed to higher humidity. I think the science is more complex than that but it's a short answer for ya'. 👍

@@allendesomer Thanks for the reply, I have a similar guitar to the one in the video, same type same age. It has a couple of problems though, notably a bit of belly bulge. would humidifying it be a good idea?
@jamesfetherston1190
@jamesfetherston1190 4 жыл бұрын
Too dry a guitar can cause the top to sink, the fret ends become exposed, a hump on the fretboard where it meets the body and several other problems. Too much humidity has another whole set of issues. Even worse is rapid fluctuations, or extremes between the two. Best bet for an acoustic is to Keep it consistently in that 45-55 relative humidity. Failing to do so can really screw up a guitar.

Dave, I have 2 MIJ fender Stratocasters and 3 MIA. why the hell does the g string on every one of them buzz???? Is this just a fender Stratocaster thing??
@Jester-Riddle
@Jester-Riddle 4 жыл бұрын
The G-String probably buzzes because it's an 'Active' G-String with a concealed battery-driven device. Take the batteries out and the buzzing will stop …
@Riverdeepnwide
@Riverdeepnwide 4 жыл бұрын
Pfffft Stephen. Don't be silly, no one has ever actually found those concealed batteries. 🙄 Andy Phillips, besides being one of a girlfriend's favourite birthday present, a buzzing G string on a non fretted note (open G) is a problem in your nuts. If it buzzes on the fretted notes, it needs setup. Where do you hear the buzz? Always take care of your nuts.

I don't believe old bird box guitars can ever be truly humidified once they have completely dried out. I don't think the water vapor can penetrate into the cells of the cellulose.
