I like Raphael's subtle approach. Unlike so many other youtubers, he does not start the video by asking you to like or subscribe. He waits until the last five seconds of the video. Choosing instead to get right into the meat of the video. His knowledge of different types of ties and materials is also impressive. Very fun, interesting, and giving me lots of new information not found on other channels of men's style.

Although my father hated ties (and still does) I didn't need to start from scratch, since I found a big bag of ties from my uncle on the attic. Unfortunately their are really 90's and about 4 out of 5 of those ties are absolutely unwearable, but there are some timeless ties and sometimes it's fun to walk around with a tie from the rugby world cup 1999, most college students still think your well-dressed, no matter how horrible the tie is.
@VolvoGuy19697 жыл бұрын
Gerhard Thiel Interesting... I honestly didn't know there was a 90s era style, at least for dress or business clothes. I recall 1990s styles as being fairly classic and neutral. I still have a few ties and jackets leftover from the 90s and even late 1980s and they're very similar to what is in this video. Then again, that's what I like about these videos is that he suggests stuff that is classic and timeless so it will look right in any era. :D It's cool that you inherited your uncle's stuff and can still wear some of it!
@oltedders7 жыл бұрын
90's shirts and ties have a very dated look. The shirt collars are narrow and the ties have a particularly small knot and wide blades, which is unfortunate because there are some really beautiful ties from that decade.

@@Richie_roo I think that's what it's become in the last 10 years. People just don't dress up for daily activities, the pressed outfits only come out for special events. This video saying there are ties nicer to use while travelling is off the mark. Almost no travellers wear full formal outfits these days. Take a gander at the people in centurian club and first class seats. ...people are dressed as casually as they can be.

I love those grenadine and knit ties for the texture. I also adore paisley. I am partial to relatively large patterns. Since I am relatively tall, I can handle them. Basically, I wear things other people might not be able to get away with - just because I can :) I'm more of an autumn-color person, and I favor strong, jewel-tone hues, so: burgundy, rust, coral, teal, eggplant, olive etc. I don't currently have the means to buy a dark suit, but when I do, I am probably going to go with midnight blue rather than black. That would naturally impact my choice of colors. I don't like the idea of wearing multiple prints, though. If the tie is printed, I would prefer a solid suit and a pocket square that picks up one of the colors in the print.

For me the tie is the best when it's made of silk, is at least 4 inches long and has a nostalgic, or even a classic look. Luckily in my home town there are 2 flea markets (or actually one of them is a antique shop) and I've gotten some decent ones from them cheaply. Also my aunt lives in Oulu and she has sent a few from there. There is also a decent vintage clothes shop: got all of the silk pocket squares they were selling. There has been some surprises, though. For example, when I was looking for a white pocket square with yellow shades, I found an old Ritzenhoff 1999 champagne glass (with 5 golden Empire State Buildings, designed by Werner Pawlok) and in the box, where the glass was, there was a white cotton pocket square with yellow Empire State Buildings around a black world with text ''if you make it there, you can make it everywhere''. Bought the box with the glass and a catalogue that came with it and cleaned the square from some stains by hand. I put it at the top of my pocket square collection and the glass box (with everything forementioned) is in my glass cabinet.

Part of the fun of watching your vids is that I agree with you only 2/3 of the time. But we agree 100% that men need to think comprehensively about their wardrobe. For example, I have never bought a tie without thinking about how it would fit into the stuff I already had. And for sure the simplest way to get more variety into your wardrobe is to buy a tie that goes with a lot of stuff you already have. Another point about ties is they are the only thing a man can wear that can be spectacular. So consider ties more as an opportunity than a duty.

Raphael quick question. I work at a job where I wear a shirt and tie, no suit or blazer. Would you follow the same rules for wearing a shirt and a tie instead of wearing tie with a suit?
@mydogskips26 жыл бұрын
Wow, really, a shirt and tie but no jacket, I think that's rather unusual. I am certainly not an expert in these matters, but from the videos I've watched and books I've read, it is said that one generally should NOT wear a tie if they are not also wearing a jacket/blazer. If you are not wearing a jacket, you should just drop the tie, and of course, don't button the top button. If you insist on wearing a tie as I usually do, you do not need to wear a suit, a casual sportcoat or blazer is fine, but you should generally have a jacket to go along with your shirt and tie. You can take your jacket off of course, but you should have it, it is really somewhat of a fashion accessory. The rules for matching a shirt and tie to an individual requires more information on said individual. Some things may look good on one person but not on another. A person's skin color, hair color, eye color, and whether they are high or low contrast all need to be taken into account. There are also guidelines for mixing patterns as well, but they are not easily, or should I rather say, concisely explained. However, if you are wearing solids as most men do, particularly white, most any tie should work, it's just a question of how formal you want to look.

I like to wear ties but often times I'm the only one wearing one. Like at the staff lunch I went to not even my superiors wore one. When I wear one to Church only about 3 or 4 men in the congregation wear them. It kinda frustrates me and makes me want to quit wearing them. Any suggestions?
@baze3SC2 жыл бұрын
If you like them wear them. Personally I'd be happy if I didn't have to wear one to work. Not that I don't like the aesthetics, it's a matter of comfort. Also I wouldn't want to outdress my colleagues and possibly alienate them. You gotta pay attention to things like that. However wearing a tie to church is totally appropriate in my opinion if it's meant as an act of dignity and respect. If the motivation is to look better than everyone else then maybe it's time to reexamine.

Yeah, I mean... In a smart casual dresscode (such as pizza, or cinema, or shopping center..), it is possible for a 22years-old man wear tie without being overdressed? I'm not talking about wearing suit and tie, but only tie. Maybe with a bomber jacket, or a piar of jeans... What do you (all) think?
@twoohhunoh8 жыл бұрын
StylEd Men you can, it really depends on the texture and color though. In the beginning when he talks about the navy tie he mentions a few materials like denim, cotton and cashmere being very casual. You can definitely use those if worn correctly.
@gentlemansgazette8 жыл бұрын
Of course. Go with a knit tie, or a wool tie or something with texture.
@Kenshin5648 жыл бұрын
I am not Sven, but in my opinion it strongly depends on your confidence with it. You should also factor in what your friends are wearing. But in my opinion, especially when you pair it with a cardigan vest, it is fine. Always keep in mind that people will react strongly to seeing this for the first time and will, over time, get used to it. If you are already wearing shirts for those occasions, it should be easy to one up yourself. One thing to consider might be the risk of getting your tie dirty when eating pizza or in a pub. Be careful about it and only do so if you do not mind the chance of ruining a tie. Maybe take an emergency stain remover stick with you to be prepared.
