It feels good to wear something nice after a day of donning dark, stained clothes and to take the time to match and pair articles together, including the tie. I nearly always receive compliments on my outfit and have even been told by a few, "It's nice to see someone dress up." I have yet to meet anyone who seems to actually associate the tie and other more traditional menswear articles with stuffyness and the business world; the closest I've come to that is my tween cousin thinking such clothing as being "too old". On my opinion ties are an essential of a men‘s wardrobe. Whenever I wear a suit I wear a tie, because a without it, the suit wouldn’t be complete and the huge white spot that could be seen without a tie would look atrocious. When I wear combinations I usually wear ties, sometimes even the more flashy 1990s ties are working fine (these are perfect when you want to wear a tie, but it’s a very causal occasion, e.g going to play some bowling. Because they are somewhat casual). The only time I wear combinations without a tie is when it’s very hot (30 degrees and more) because then it’s too hot, but when I wear a suit, it could be 50+ degrees I would still wear a tie!

I used to do outdoor work with mentally disabled persons for almost a year. We picked up trash and did some gardening etc, so wearing a tie to work wouldn't have been practical. The most formal I could get was wearing an army surplus field shirt; thick cotton, so it was warm enough even when it rained and loose enough to allow movement and to fit a wool undershirt for colder months. I enjoyed doing outdoor work, but at the same time I was thinking that when I get a job where I can wear a formal shirt and a tie, I will. Sometimes people who don't know me ask me why I'm wearing a tie and if it's for a special occasion. For me it's also self-care; I'm worth it to wear a tie every day, if I want to. And I often do, but in the summertime it's often those Hawaii-shirts :D

Speaking from experience of being a shabbily dressed man that turned into a well dressed man. I used to do that because my shirts were too baggy and the waist of my pants was too low so when I would tuck my shirts they would keep getting untucked and would look unflattering (it's a negative feedback loop, companies make bad clothes because people buy bad clothes which makes companies make more bad clothes and so on). Once I got shirts that fit correctly and wore higher waisted pants (not to mention wearing shirt garters when I am not wearing a jacket) I actually love the way a tucked in shirt looks.

I do enjoy wearing a tie. But could never get into bow ties. Something about them just doesn’t sit well to me. Not sure if it just automatically feels like someone is trying too hard, the gap showing on the shirt that a normal tie usually keeps covered, or something else. It’s just not my cup of tea. I do want to own one, to learn how to tie them, so that I can teach my son some day how to tie his own bow tie, in case he ends up wanting to wear them.

As a Conservatory boy, I started wearing formal suits very early (13yo) and informal suits at 17. I’ve allways regarded the tie as a sign of maturity and I felt that I shouldn’t wear one PRECISELY to distinguish as a teenager from grown-up men. So I built my style all around the shirt+suit without a tie or turtleneck+suit in the winter. While in my twenties, I started to wear ties gradually in the most formal occasions. Ironically, when I turned 30, I had ZERO occasions to wear a tie. So, from 31 on, I decided to wear a tie with casual outfits at night (for restaurants and bars) and I ALLWAYS get SEVERAL compliments.

I love wearing ties. I believe them to be stylish and just an essential accessory when dressing up. I always get complimented on them. Even in yhe work place, I was excuses from a staff meeting discussing the "too casual" way the staff was dressing, because management felt that there is no issue with the way I dress.

I have 9, yet the last time I had to wear one was almost 9 years ago when I got married. My current wardrobe doesn't require it, nor does my current job as it would look overdressed at the company I work at. My grandfather on the other hand never skipped a day without his tie. I'd like to see more ties "in the wild"

I wore ties to weddings, and now to funerals. My job has zero dress code, and I'm of the age of declining friends and thus never get invited to anything. So my tie collection sits unless I randomly wear one for no reason.

I think that there is such a thing as a more relaxed formality. There is an alternative way to look sharp without getting "tied up" in a tie

Nothing beats wearing a beautiful silk necktie with a perfectly fitting white dress shirt and dress suit. I could wear it all day and night.

When Time Warner and AOL merged it was a telling experience. The Time execs from NYC would show up in traditional suits ,and the AOL programmers from LA would show up in Hawaiian t shirts. I guess LA won that battle.

I wear pretty bold patterned jackets. Not all that classical, objectively. When I throw a funky tie in the mix it gets me a few more mentions. I think it being a formality bender intrigues people.

Preston - I love that you are impeccably dressed - as usual. And as usual, your explication is excellent. My question is - what can be done to stem, if not reverse, the tidal decline of menswear, specifically suits and ties? Thank you and the GG for all your efforts.

When I retired, I gave away most of my ties. My prim5 problems with ties are: easy to stain and require a perfect shirt collar. I wear a pocket square for colour and class. I dropped hundreds at Jim Thompson's in Bangkok.

I have some nice ones, love for example Shibumi Ties. I stopped wearing them because I wear more business casual. Oxford button down, chino and a blazer with pocket square.

Truthfully, I far prefer bow and bolo ties. My job requires working over food. The neck ties can dip into them. Bolos are too short to dip and can be beautiful, and bow ties are cool. When I am not at work, I often wear neckties for a change of pace, but still generally prefer bolo and bow ties.

Nobody likes to wear them much because everyone likes to go casual not a fan of it . I have a few suits dress shirts and ties that I get lucky to wear once or twice a year . It’s nice to dress it up a bit over t-shirts & polos … maybe this pandemic is some what a cause but I would like to go away with casual and see more formal attire !!

I love ties. They are the only way to accent a blue, gray or black suit. (Do not ever wear brown.)
@caesarortega52492 жыл бұрын
Why don't you wear brown? I think it's quite fetching and relaxed, especially in the fall. I have 4 ensembles that use brown: 1. dark brown suit with dark burgundy vest and really dark tie 2. I like to wear the brown vest from that suit with my blue suits or with my dark overcoats with a black tie. 3.I got a tweed brown sportcoat that I wear with jeans and boots and 4. wearing brown pants with my navy jackets.

I've worked as a funeral director many years ago & have seen where the style of dress went from formal to extremely casual since the '70's, even for the deceased. We have gone from suit & tie to T-shirts & Jerseys. Funeral home employees appear stiff to outsiders & overdressed at funeral services. There has definitely been a shift in men's & women's dress codes.

I wear them all the time, even in the summer (summer ties, bowties, the options are endless) - don't really care about anyone's opinion. As long as you wear them indifferently and are nice to people, not getting aroused and smile all the time, nobody will say anything bad to your face. Well, maybe behind your back - but who cares about that?

I remember when I was in pre-university at school, we had to wear "formal" attire. Formal in our sense (Malaysian) just wear dress shirts, slacks and leather shoes. Other guys just wear that but I'm the only guy wear tie. My teachers and friends did complemented me and indirectly started a trend.
