Great choices. Your point about multi tracking being a death knell for the spirit of jazz was very well made. 'Stale, stagnant, canned, easy listening shit' On the money! Hallelujah! But why is this not painfully obvious to everyone?
@TheJazzShepherd4 жыл бұрын
i dont get it either???
@BaldyFella4 жыл бұрын
Because a large percentage of people listening to music are like sheep. They follow trends, they don't develop their musical palate. They'd rather take the fast food option than the tougher route of preparing a meal fit for a connoisseur.
@williamnow1464 жыл бұрын
I agree. Multi tracking jazz is like emailing or texting your response...just not meant to be that way. And the live recordings are a step ahead of studio jazz, in a similar way. All great LPs. Love the Shelly Blackhawk series and agree with your description.

the 80s stuff...i cant believe people like that stuff......the Blackhawk is killer stuff
@williamnow1464 жыл бұрын
I don’t think I have any from the 80’s! Like you, 55-65 is my sweet spot. For some reason, I realized a couple weeks ago, that I have large amount of albums from 1962. It seems that a lot of my favs are from that year...strange(?) I’ve slowly got 1,2,3 volumes of the Blackhawk. What great music and recordings! Great vid (as usual).

Some wonderful live stuff there Dan, Your comments were thought provoking. I also think Thelonious Monk at Town Hall, Horace Silver at The Village Gate, Cannonball Adderley in San Francisco and Buck Clayton at Gulliver' s Club, (= Album 'A Swingin' Dream') are all exciting live dates that deserve recommendation..
@TheJazzShepherd4 жыл бұрын
YUP All those titles are werth seeking out as well!! I do not have the Buck CLayton... To be hinest in this series there were SOOOO many options , it would be hard to make the same list twice!
@discus2764 жыл бұрын
Agreed - too many to list. Buck Clayton only lead band (lips gone). Oct 1988 Band a bit like a Hollywood Studio Big band with Mel Lewis on drums - Terrific recording though. Stash Records.

Another blazing selection to feast on. Thanks man. The live Bill Evans record is very special to me. The ESP between LaFaro and Evans and the period it was recorded - it's divine. So sad about Scott LaFaro's early death. Imagine all of the other stunning records they would have made together.

Great stuff as always. For Miles I’m kind of surprised you didn’t go with My Funny Valentine + Four and More. Even though it predates Wayne Shorter’s stint, I think it’s the pinnacle of Miles in some ways. Everything that’s great about Miles intersects on this recording. All of the modal ideas from Kind of Blue, some of his best standards, and the beginnings of where he would go with the second great quintet. And the solos are all note for note perfect, with telepathic interplay among the band.

All great records, Dan! If I could recommend one today, it would be Jazz at the Philharmonic in Europe with Stan Getz, JJ Johnson, Victor Feldman, Sam Jones and Louis Hayes with guest appearance of Dizzy Gillespie. There version of Bop 'n Boogie is as exhilerating as jazz gets. The tempo is beyond imaginable and leaves even listeners soaked with sweat. It's on Verve V6-8540, maybe you got 'm already. It's freaking awesome. Bop 'n boogie...check that out.

I am with you with the Art Blakey Bildrand stuff, have them, love them and Clifford is killing. Agree with the rest too and luckily have some of them in my collection too. Hey Dan, just curious, now that you are deep into jazz , can you still listen to rock with as much enjoyment ? Thanks for the video.
