Im 72, had one for 40 years. It developed slowly after a small torn cartilage operation. Best way to reduce the swelling or lump is to do knee brace exercises frequently. Sets of 5 every hour you are awake. Do gently until the swelling goes down. Exercises act as a pump to get rid. Nothing else will work naturally. Much better than ice. Dont be afraid to brace if badly swollen. Obviously you need to rest and elevate the affected leg. To do: sit with straight leg elevated on stool... breathe in through belly and pull foot backwards towards you (streatching calf) tightening the quadricep muscles for 5 seconds. When you brace correctly the knee goes down and lower leg comes up slightly. Relax as you breath out. Then repeat every 10 seconds or so. You create a natural pump which works quite quickly to release the pressure thus alowing good blood circulation and natural healing...Knee brace exercises are the first step to being able to cope with the bakers youself easily. Dont be afraid to do them,.. is uncomfortable to do if badly swollen so do slowly and gently until you get to grips with it.. i recommended these to my GP!

nigel, I'm paying attention to your advice!! I'm Bone on Bone in the right knee. Had Torn meniscus surgery in 1997 . The Dr then told me that I had OA in the Knee. Moreover that right leg is just over 1" shorter than the left leg (1.15"). That was a result of a Femur fractured playing HS Football in 1966 at age 15 - I'm 71 now. After the Body cast was removed (3 Months in a full Body cast) the leg was clearly shorter. The growth plate was affected by the fracture - they didn't know much about Growth plates back then. It was left unaddressed by the doctor and my parent. Ortho shoies probably should have been rercommended. That Leg Length Discrepancy has wreaked havoc with my spine/ Hips and overall physiatry! I am less Bone on Bone in the left knee which also had a torn Meniscus in 2013 (surgery). FYI, I have had at least 6 courses of Synvisc (or comparable Gel) injected into both knees. They would help for lnger of periods of time in the past, but the recent course (it's 3 injections - 1 week apart) is doing very little. I have large Baker's Cyst behind the right knee but not on the left. I am on the way to two knee replacements - the right will be 1st. But i'm delaying as long as I can. I fear that surgery !!

Its so true. It’s does act like a pump. Mine was coming and going, but I thought I would take time off from the gym and anything that may be causing it to get worse to see if that helps. But when I took the time away my cyst got huge. You gotta stay super active, stretching, etc.

I did not quite catch the advice. Do I need to put knee brace before doing the exercise? Or even wear the knee brace all the time? Thanks in advance, I have a cyst formed after I tractor-mowed on bumpy lawn for several hours and then sit kneeling for several hours playing with my kid. Then I continued exercising (and mowing) and I got it ruptured (I believe during mowing). So, I ruptured it, but it forms a bit again. So I would like to pump it out this time using your method. Is there any video of this exercise?

I didn't notice the bakers cyst until after I broke my foot.had surgery on it , and gained both weight and edema. The MRI was needed to just confirm it wasn't a blood clot. The baker's cyst is still there , but once I was able to lose the weight I gained and the edema reduced I didn't notice the pain anymore. When I have flares from the CRPS though and the inflammation process resumes then the baker's cyst does become noticeable. This is a helpful video to understand all the options AND the reason why the cyst developed in the 1st place. My ortho and my surgeon glazed over the how it may have developed part ,just saying it was very common and chances are it was there for years before the break and surgery. Glad to know more! Thanks Dr. Furlan keep the great videos coming!

Carrying heavy loads up and down stairs...as in moving, groceries, carrying out heavy bags of trash or recycle.. the key word is weight on knees. This strains the knees to over capacity. Carry smaller loads or get someone else to carry the heavy loads. Learned this the hard way

I'm disabled with Chronic illnesses/Pain, and so I can't lift heavy stuff anyway, but even lifting small amounts of weight aggravates my baker's cysts and causes terrible pain. As does, bending, standing, walking, sitting etc etc

I believe this is what I have, swelling, no pain at all, loose feeling at joint, right leg. The PA sent me for an ultrasound to rule out blood clot, doctor affiliated hospital Cape Regional) wanted $3500 for test, my deductible would have been $1700-that what I would have had to pay. I'm still paying off the $1500 deductible I had for the same test from 3 years ago so I wondered if I could go somewhere else. I called an independent imaging place and it was $170!!!!! Had it done an hour later than the hospital was going to do it. Buyer beware-I paid $170 for a test that the hospital would have charged $3500.

I just turned 51 and have had my first Baker's cyst 10 years ago. I first noticed them when I moved to a new home which had hard wood floors. Within a few weeks of moving in and walking on the hard wood I had my first bakers cyst. I didn't even know I had a lump on the back of my knee until my fiance noticed it. It was huge! At the time I wasn't sure what it was but looked online and self diagnosed the issue. It went on for several days / weeks and it would not go away. It was only in my left knee. I started to wear slippers with cushioning to see if it would help. And it did!!! I now wear slippers at all times when on hard wood floors. If I remove the slippers only for 10 minutes my knee pain will come back and I will have another cyst. The best thing you can do is wear shoes or slippers with as much cushioning as you can. If you don't notice any improvement try another pair. Do not use just rubber like crocks because it does not help. You need slippers that are like walking shows for support. I would imagine if you have hip pain this might help as well. Needless to say 10 years later so long as I keep wearing my slippers and use good shoes I have been able to keep them away. But I am not kidding, if I take them off, within 10 minutes of walking on hard wood floors I will have bad pain and a lump will start. Please pass this along to anyone who has baker's cysts!

Now getting feeling of numbness in front of knee and aches most of the time. Is it worth arranging another consultant appointment or just leaving things as they are at my age. I injured my knee 5 wks ago, X-ray showed no broken bones & no arthritis(I'm 68) The Doc was surprised. A tremendous amount of pain. Today I had a MRI which showed a meniscus tear & Baker's cyst. I don't know how bad the tear is. The treatment is RICE, ace leg compression , I also have a brace, Ibuprofen ,& physical therapy. I'm suppose to wait 6 wks and return to the DR if not better. I can only sleep on my side when I roll on my back it wakes me up w/extreme throbbing pain. So far no fun, & I want it to be behind me. A ligament is strained, but, everything else is OK. None of it worked. I’m an avid exerciser with no knee injuries or suspected injuries. I find my knee worsens when I rest it. Needs constant movements or it tightens up and ROM is vey bad

But I am not kidding, if I take them off, within 10 minutes I will have bad pain and a lump will start. Please pass this along to anyone who has bakers cysts!

DR. What if You are Bone on Bone in the Knee? I had a torn Meniscus in the right knee, surgically repaired in 1996. The surgeon told me at that time the MRI showed Osteo Arthritis in the Knee. I have had Synvisc Gel inserted at least 5 times. The Otho doctor says that the knee replacement is inevitable. The Synvisc is NOT lasting as long as it did in the past. My left knee is partially Bone on Bone as well!. But I only get Baker's Cysts in the right knee - it is currently larger than at any other time in the past. Should I do Exercises? Some PTs say yes, do the Quad strengthening , others on Line say, no: do exercises to sthrengthen the Glutes and Hammies. I'm lost - I do fear Knee Replacement surgery? I'm 71 and suffer with numerous Spinal Maladies, much of which I feel have been generated by Leg Length Discrepancy. My right femur was fractured in 1966 playing HS Football and as a result is over 1 Inch shorter. That LLD has affected my entire well being, by affecting my Physiatry. DSI Joints are inflamed, L2 L3 and L5-S1 are herniated and bulging. and a Multiple of sites of Stenosis labelled as Mild to Moderate. When the injury happened and the ortho doctor at that time left the short leg unaddressed! That was a Big Mistake. Should have had adjusted shoes recommended particularly at that age (16) with my spine still forming. On top of the other ailments, I have Dextroscoliosis of 25 degrees. Pay attention to your Bodies!

I dislocated my left knee cap years ago. For whatever reason, about 4 months ago, I developed swollen knees, then the pain in the back of my knee came. I sprained my back 3 weeks ago. Went to my doctor. He gave me a steroid shot and muscle relaxants for my back. After 3 weeks my back is much much better but my knee is getting worse. I have wrapped my knee, stayed off my feet, used cold packs and taken acetaminophen. I have constant bad ache in my knee especially when I put any weight on my leg, so walking is tough. If I move my foot even slightly, from being straight out, then the bad ache turns into bad pain. Like I said it is getting worse.

Went to my Doctor and did some test and said I didn’t tear anything and said to come back in 3 weeks and did my own research and realized I had a baker cyst. I hope this goes away!

Thanks for that. I had knee pain the last 8 weeks. Went to the doctor done an x-ray and a CT scan confirmed something else plus the baker's cyst. Was told to wear a knee protective brace as it wasn't very big and that was it. Last weekend we were at a car race walking over a lot of foot bridges that night. My calf was so sore and the next day sore but now the calf is good but the knee is still sore. I can't see a lump. I can't fill a lump. Thanks

I have Baker’s cyst before 2 years ,go to specialist and make ultrasound and Dr say,we must check every 6 months and see if can get bigger, but one my friend said you can try put succulents ( Hylotelephium spectabile - Crassulaceae) on the spot every night 3-4 leaves for one week . This can help Baker cyst to burst ( not sore) , for me after that never come back again . Since then I have 2 pots of that Crassulaceae

What is the best type of doctor to assess for Baker's Cysts (behind both knees). X-rays returned ok, nothing significant. I'm at a loss at to how to move forward at this point. Terrible pain behind both knees and taking NSAIDs every 3 days. Pain is so bad when the med has not kicked in that I can barely lift my knees to get out of bed, but on pants, go up down stairs, get in/out of car... Otherwise in excellent healthy. Thank you
