I just turned 51 and have had my first Baker's cyst 10 years ago. I first noticed them when I moved to a new home which had hard wood floors. Within a few weeks of moving in and walking on the hard wood I had my first bakers cyst. I didn't even know I had a lump on the back of my knee until my fiance noticed it. It was huge! At the time I wasn't sure what it was but looked online and self diagnosed the issue. It went on for several days / weeks and it would not go away. It was only in my left knee. I started to wear slippers with cushioning to see if it would help. And it did!!! I now wear slippers at all times when on hard wood floors. If I remove the slippers only for 10 minutes my knee pain will come back and I will have another cyst. The best thing you can do is wear shoes or slippers with as much cushioning as you can. If you don't notice any improvement try another pair. Do not use just rubber like crocks because it does not help. You need slippers that are like walking shows for support. I would imagine if you have hip pain this might help as well. Needless to say 10 years later so long as I keep wearing my slippers and use good shoes I have been able to keep them away. But I am not kidding, if I take them off, within 10 minutes of walking on hard wood floors I will have bad pain and a lump will start. Please pass this along to anyone who has baker's cysts!

You need good support when it comes to foot wear. Please take what this commenter says with a grain of salt. ALWAYS get medical advice because you need proper diagnosis. And proper advice. Yes it’s ok to see what others do with theirs to see what helps them, but remember, what helps them may not help you.

@CathyBlack-wr8uz5 ай бұрын
I worked out with a trainer for years because I was diagnosed with severe osteoporosis. I’m also an avid hiker/walker. Last year, I developed a “fullness” behind my knees. I do a LOT of quad extensions and leg presses. It was determined that I had a injured meniscus as well as a bakers cyst, and I also discovered I had fallen arches.!! My first pt gave me some help, but bad advice in the end. Thankfully, I found Dr. Maddough’s videos. WOW. I signed up for the knee arthritis program also, and truly, it was all great advice. Tough journey, but 100% correct advice. I am strengthening my feet, ankles, lower abs, and ‘butt’ muscles, and it has been the best thing I’ve done (outside of prayer), because while I’m 63, my hope is to be active and continue building bone at the same time for as long as I can. This group of people really cares.

Thank you so much! I had a Baker's cyst apparently burst after a few hrs of climbing up and down a ladder, causing blood to pool in my foot and bruising above my knee that developed a few days later and extreme calf pain and occasional hamstring pain. GP sent me for an MRI then to ortho surgeon who gave me no help and said to keep up my walking and see him again in 6 wks. I'm 75. Im so gladI found your videos!

I’m so glad I came across this video. I had recently been to the doctor for knee pain. I had no lump and only a bone spur appeared on X-ray. I was given a script for physical therapy for a ‘strained’ knee. That same night, before I’d had a chance to make a PT appointment, I had a popping in my knee that caused severe pain and left me unable to put any weight on that knee. ER X-rays only confirmed no fractures. When I was able to get another appointment at the doctor’s office (with a PA) 3 days later I was told (without further exam or imaging) that the doctor I had seen now thought I had a ruptured Bakers Cyst-without even explaining what it was. I was given an Rx for steroids and told to see a physical therapist. It’s good to know about the walking as my cardiologist has me on a daily cardio level walking routine that he’d recently told me to increase in length and intensity which I’ve been trying to do. I’m glad to have the information from this video before I visit the PT.

wow - this is an eye opener for me. I was doing quad exercises all the time in my gym session having tiny baker cyst diagnosed and my PT gave me pistol squat as well. Damn!! A few days back, during leg extension I felt pains resurfacing and the next day too and I kept wondering why knees are not getting better over time. Jeez!! From now on, no more quad strengthening. Thank you for sharing!

I replied to a comment above but my reply aligns equally with your comment. Finally some helpful advice! I just discovered I have a Baker’s Cyst behind my left knee. (Actually think I have the condition with both knees) I was doing a lot of walking for exercise and the one behind my left knee ruptured while out on a walk. Went to urgent care where they x-rayed my knee and told me could be bakers cyst or tendinitis and to follow up with orthopedic surgeon. Orthopedic surgeon prescribed an anti-inflammatory and physical therapy. After 4-5 weeks finding PT has helped some but more work to do. I did notice that my knee felt better after bike riding - hurt at start of the ride but at the end or next day it was feeling better. What you say makes sense about strengthening glutes to offset putting too much pressure on quad and knee: Definitely going to work on the exercises you recommended. Thank you!

Wow, great information! I never knew I had a Baker's cyst until it ruptured and I went to the ER. I am a retired OT and have seen Baker's cysts in elderly patients, but they were very large. I am an avid cyclist, but the past several years I have noticed stiffness and limited ROM in my knees, cannot do the Child's pose in yoga or sit back on my heels when kneeling. This year I had bunion surgeries, 5 months apart, that prevented me from cycling. On a recent 2 mile walk, I had increased left knee pain that progressed. Then one day I felt a POP at the back of my knee and went to the ER where the PA said "do you know that you have a Baker's cyst?" I am wearing a knee brace, using crutches to offset pressure and weight. Have follow up appt with PCP tomorrow. I especially appreciate your recommendation on balancing muscle strength by increasing glute strength. Makes sense. Will definitely watch more of your videos. Thank you!

Just started PT for a "suspected" Baker cyst. My PT gave me a set of exercises that consisted EXACTLY of what you said NOT to do. After 2 days, my knee is worse and now pain is shooting down the side of my calf and the front of tibia. I say suspected, because after X-rays didn't reveal and bone damage in my knee and not even osteoarthritis, I was scheduled for 9 PT sessions before I can have the MRI to diagnose what is really going on with my knee/leg. I don't have a swelling behind my knee, only pain. Very frustrated here where the insurance company decides what diagnostic tests I will receive and in what order and not what's best for me based on the symptoms.

Hi Dana, We’re so sorry to hear about the trouble you’ve been having with PT and not getting the answers you were hoping for. It’s tough when you expect proper diagnosis and treatment but end up with more questions. While we can’t offer personalized guidance without a proper evaluation, we do want to share that many knee issues are due to muscle imbalances, especially between the quads and glutes. Generally, the quads are naturally stronger than the glutes, which can create an imbalance. Think of a seesaw-if the quads are overworked and stronger, it’s like having too much weight on one side of the seesaw, putting extra strain on your knee. Strengthening your glutes and core can help balance things out and reduce that pressure. We have a knee pain help playlist you might find helpful. You can access it here: “Knee Pain Exercises, Stretches, Advice, & Tips Playlist” kzbin.info/aero/PLJVIPiFvv1mY02hvFckRQO55HfAqDtWrM Start with one or two exercises, beginning with the smallest range of motion and the lowest intensity. If you happen to get a diagnosis please email us at info@epmanualphysicaltherapy and we might be able to email you some other resources for it if we have it available. We hope this information was helpful to you. We hope this helps and that you find some relief soon!🧡

Went through something similar. I’m not a doctor, but I had what felt like it might be a sprained MCL, but the doctors kept saying torn meniscus, osteoarthritis, etc. Put me through physical therapy. About 4 visits in, I developed a severe case of patellar tendonitis, to the degree that I couldn’t walk. The pain was so excruciating. Finally went for the MRI. That’s when the BS started. They automatically wanted to cut me, without knowing, in my opinion, exactly what was going on. Looked up some exercises that felt comfortable, wore my braces and sleeves, and over a period of time, it all got better. Until I re-injured it again. Now, after I strained something in there, I feel a Baker’s cyst coming on. Going to try some of your exercises and see where that leads me. If I find another doctor and get a diagnosis, I’ll email you.

Hi Doc. I have a knee problem since my childhood days. But have come a long way since then. 62 years now. Was advised by orthopedic surgeon to go for knee replacement. Watching your videos has made me determined not to. I do as many of your exercises that I can.Beginning of February 2022 went overseas and on the very first day overseas I fell on the knee that I have had problems with all these years. A very hard fall which led to heavy swelling on my knees and bruises. I thought that was end of my holiday which just started. This was in Dubai. But it was a miracle and I strongly believe that God was right there to protect me. Using wet towels I managed to bring the swelling down. Also had blood clots. I did the rest of my holidays thankfully. Home now after 3 weeks. I have this stiffness on my right knee in the inner side which was still there before my fall. It seems there is a bone spur formed there. And painful when I put pressure on it. How can I treat this problem. 🙏

Thanks for this video. It was definitely helpful to identify my knee issue. Due to swelling, as it’s been going in now for over 6 weeks, it has clearly caused issues in the back of my calf. Any suggestions on exercises for this that won’t make my primary issue worse? Because this has been going in for so long I recognize it’s caused other issues in my leg. The back muscles above my knee has a knot as well. What a mess, it’s definitely affected my quality of life. I really appreciate your video and your approach

I hope it is, I am going to go back to my yoga classes - Bikram as well - all they do it strengthening ham string. I had never had knee issues when I used to do yoga. During covid I replaced with walking , often with heavy grocery bags and laptops etc. Nothing good came out of it. Yoga is very good for knees and the back .

what exercises can you recommend if the cyst has already burst? thanks.
@epmanualphysicaltherapy2 жыл бұрын
Hey Katie!!! Great question - it would be the same exercises. You still have the same problem (the muscle imbalance) that created the cyst. It's just that it popped now and you can develop other problems if you don't address the root. You may have swelling in your calf muscle that you need to control using exercise.In case you need it, here is the playlist of our Baker's Cyst videos: "Baker's Cyst Knee Pain Help" kzbin.info/aero/PLJVIPiFvv1mauCV7_gEEntBWMvGcQ5OyE

This is the most helpful video I’ve seen. When mine burst it was acute and incredibly painful. I am a former competitive athlete, so your description of the exercises and especially not overworking your quads, made complete sense. Even before I watched your vid, I told friend that I needed to get a stationary bike. Intuitively it seemed like the right thing. Normally I would use my own bike but I have so many hills where I am. I’m going to check back in in four months to let you know how I’m doing. Thank you thank you thank you❤

Great video! I love walking and am sad to hear walking is bad for baker’s cyst. How long would you say one should put off walking?
@withlovegergana Жыл бұрын
Thank you so much for all the information! So useful!!! 🙌🏽🙌🏽 I am in my late twenties and have been to 2 x-rays and one MRI for the doctors to finally say why my one calf is swollen - mainly Bakers cyst. They have also told me that I have Joint hypermobility syndrome and a connective tissue disorder, which may have led to the cyst (but no definitive opinion was stated) I’m kind of desperate as the doctors didn’t really tell me what to do but to wait for 6months for the next checkup and their main point was that it is absolutely normal for the one calf to be almost twice the other (smth I haven’t notice and wasn’t true for almost 30 years…) Could you please tell me if the exercises in the video are good for me and what else could I do? Thank you so much in advance!!!!!

I have advanced bilateral osteoarthritis in both knees and just developed a huge bakers cyst on the back of my right knee after doing a lot of swimming and stair climbing. My knee is stiff and painful and I'm extremely depressed. Is it safe to do gentle swimming? And if so, what kind of swimming strokes would you recommend?
@epmanualphysicaltherapy2 жыл бұрын
Hey Danelle Great question!! Swimming can be great for knee arthritis as long as you are effectively using your glutes. There is not a specific stroke that makes knee OA better, as long as you are using your glutes. Glutes are key to offloading pressure inside the knee that feeds knee arthritis. Getting in the water can definitely help with taking pressure off while you're in the water.

Hey @user-mr5dq7rb6n, sorry to hear about your coccyx injury :-( You're probably better off focusing on other exercises that get you stronger glutes. Hi Preetiarora, You are welcome!🙌 We are so glad that this information has given you hope. Please don't give up! Just in case you're interested, we have a Baker's Cyst playlist that you might also find helpful. You can access it here: kzbin.info/aero/PLJVIPiFvv1mauCV7_gEEntBWMvGcQ5OyE&si=9XQImz7xL0xsw3M4 Start with one or two exercises, beginning with the smallest range of motion and the lowest intensity. As you feel stronger, you can gradually increase both the range of motion and intensity. It’s best to do these exercises every day throughout the day. Aim to tire out the muscle without losing form or control. Consistency is key. Always avoid working through pain; soreness and mild discomfort are normal, but pain is not. We wish you all the best on your road to recovery! We'd love to hear how you are doing as you progress.🙏 Please take care! 🧡

Hi there, have stumbled across your video as I was searching for home treatments for Bakers Cyst. Until 2 months ago I was a regular runner, and have been so for 20+ years, doing marathons and lesser distances. Absolutely love it and am missing it terribly. Been walking a lot instead as we have a dog who needs lots of exercise. I'm gobsmacked to hear you say do not walk for exercise!! Is this REALLY true for someone like me who is used to being so active? And cycling with no hills or resistance too? I know you do these videos for a wide audience, not bespoke, but I'm interested to know if you feel I could be working harder as I'm more used to it, or will it really worsen my Bakers Cyst/knee discomfort? Thanks in anticipation, Caroline

Hey Raising the Baa, We are sorry to hear that you have been dealing with a Baker's Cyst! 🥺 We do understand how disheartening it can sound when you hear that you'll be restricted from doing the activities that you love but it is important that if you are currently experiencing a flare up that it is necessary to stop until the inflammation subsides. A Baker's Cyst is a secondary problem stemming from knee arthritis which is often not discussed. To ease this situation is to address the root cause which would be a muscle imbalance in the glute region. Once you are able to improve upon the muscle imbalance we have no doubt that you can get back to walking, cycling and possibly running. We do have additional information and exercises that we have compiled for baker's cyst. You can view it here: "Baker's Cyst Knee Pain Help" kzbin.info/aero/PLJVIPiFvv1mauCV7_gEEntBWMvGcQ5OyE We do also recommend our playlist for Knee Arthritis Help: “Knee Arthritis Pain Help” kzbin.info/aero/PLJVIPiFvv1maa9YF-WmKLF7oI4VoczH8i "Can cycling Actually Help Heal Knee Pain" kzbin.info/www/bejne/oquymomen6ubnMk We hope you can get back to the activities that you love. I developed a baker cyst after my total knee replacement. Part of my physical therapy is actually strengthening my quads. However, I do ride a stationary bike and outdoor bike. I’m not sure how to strengthen my legs without strengthening my quads, which is part of the physical therapy. However, my cyst seems to be dissipating somewhat. I will try the glute exercises and dangling my feet to try to relieve the cyst.

Consider doing hamstring exercises, I found the prone hamstring curl machine at the gym sorted my bakers cyst. I had one for 2 years in my twenties. When I first tried the machine I was surprised that I struggled with a very very low weight. You can then track your progression up the weights and compare with your quad strength. I think the recommended ratio is hamstrings should have 75% of quad strength. I found the seated hamstring curls quite painful so stuck with the prone (lying on front) machine. Not all gyms have them. I also did a lot of stationary cycling and increasing distance/resistance. It took some perseverance due to repeated swelling but it eventually worked, also plenty of stretching. Doctors advised me to rest repeatedly for months and months, to the point I felt guilty doing anything. When finally referred to a physio (uk) they told me to do exercises and build it up. Basically the opposite. I have found a steady walk can help loosen it up. I have recently started doing hip strengthening too, partly as I have been able to play sports which are quite intense on the joints.

David~ I sent over this video over to Amanda, she refused to even look at it. I had an appointment with another colleague of hers who’s been doing PT for 40 years. I tried to explain your reasoning for not doing quads. His answer “ I’ve been doing this for 40 years…blah, blah, blah.” Completely shut me down, with the exception of what you said about the stationery bicycle. I don’t see how anyone can be so stuck in their ego that they’re not even open to watching a 12:55 video that would help so many people. I’m thinking of trying to get an appointment with the head PT and taking in my ipad and getting him to watch it. Do you have any suggestions about how to get these people to listen. I need them because I’m old and the exercises are very difficult and I do need guidance in how to do them correctly. My knees started getting worse from the first appointment and continued getting worse with each appt. I stopped going for 2 weeks and found your posting! Was so excited, but can’t get anyone to listen, so have stopped again.

My active 12 year old son just showed me one of these behind his knee. He's a baseball player (pitcher) and the cyst appeared on the leg he lands on after releasing the ball. He has no pain and no recollection of injury so I'm not sure if it's related. I've been calling around and a lot of the pt offices don't seem too knowledgeable about it. Not sure what to do besides what you mentioned here.

Have you ever heard of clients getting baker cyst that rupture and dissect into the calf and the cyst that is in the calf has a lot of fibrous tissue?
@epmanualphysicaltherapy2 жыл бұрын
Hey Shay! This is Dr. David's comment moderator. Yes, we see people with ruptured Baker's Cysts here in the clinic. It's sign that you've progressed your knee problem quite a bit. The cyst will rupture once the joint capsule cannot hold the extra fluid anymore. You've still got a muscle imbalance and it's just a matter of time before the next problem comes on. It might be arthritis or a meniscus tear or something else. Have you heard of our 28 Day Knee Health & Wellness Boost Program? This program would be the right thing for you to do next to help your knee out. It's a 100% online and on-demand program for improving knee health. Is there a way to tell when you’ve built up enough glute strength or are positively on your way?
@epmanualphysicaltherapy11 ай бұрын
Great question Ellie! The best answer is that you can use your glutes doing functional activities. This means if you can walk, squat, or run with your glutes, then they have become strong enough. At that point it becomes more important to make sure you are always using them.
