My prediction is that the fully charged batteries will explode more spectacularly. Generally discharged batteries are safer to disassemble and pose less of a fire hazard, so this is what I'm basing my prediction on. I'm glad you guys finally did this test, been wondering what would happen with these myself. edit: FYI, an 18650 isn't fully charged until it's at 4.2 volts. 3.7v is considered "nominal" but 3.5v would be basically empty actually.

What makes lithium batteries flammable is trapped hydrogen gas. During thermal run away, the battery produces large amounts of gas. Higher charge state increases the reaction speed and is the main cause of thermal run away in the first place. The key thing though is that it takes time for that gas to be made. When the battery is fired out of a shotgun and hits something its instantly destroyed so there is no time to produce hydrogen. Now, Lithium itself is reactive with water. So there's a chance shooting a water jug with it might get something to happen. Though there's a lot of variables there. Does the water atomize too fast and never actually touch the lithium? Does the battery not disintegrate and release its lithium contents? Is the lithium too contaminated with additives and fail to ignite?

@@caseyb1346 There is almost no hydrogen gas (or say trace amount) in Li batteries. The anode is graphite, cathode is some Li-cobale-manganese-nickel-oxygen or Li-Iron-phosphate compounds and the electrolyte is LiPF6 plus organic solvents (just remember they're toxic, the chemistry is not important) When fully charged, graphite will be intercalated with "Li metal" and the oxygen atoms in cathode will also become very active (it's not scientifically correct but easier to understand). If these 2 touches, oxygen in cathode will oxidize very active Li metal and cause thermal runaway, and plus you have organic solvents in the electrolyte...BOOM!! Of course, it'll also react with water to produce hydrogen if you expose to it (the reaction is much faster than your gun shot) However, if the battery is empty, there's no Li metal in graphite (Graphite cores in your pencils are very stable, right?) and the oxygen atoms in cathode is also not as active. No reaction will happen no matter how you torture the battery.

@@thatguystalker8649 Besides some old punt guns and what not, I *was* thinking of one of those, and there DOES exist some examples in the US, I think about a hundred or so of the civilian market equivalents were once exported over from Russia. Couldn't pick one up just at any gun store, and you'd have to handload all of your ammo, but these guys handload most of their funny ammo anyway, so I think if they ever chanced into the opportunity, they should jump on it. You couldn't exactly go buy all the components for loading 4-Gauge shotgun shells itself, but it wouldn't be impossible either. If they could source some appropriately sized brass, either by adapting something close, or getting one of their contacts to machine some 27mm case heads out of brass, that'd be a good start, then the hull could potentially be 3D printed out of a material such as TPA, which would give you some strength and some flex. Not sure how well it would work for crimping, and that'd probably require a new crimping die on its own, but you'd only have to make it once, and again that's something which a kind machinist who's a fan of the channel might help you make. Shotcups and wads would be the easiest part I think. The Russian KS-23 and the commercial equivalent bear rifled bores, which would be great for various slugs, but not for some, and would be unhelpful for a number of shot loads, both conventional lead balls and a lot of the goofy nonsense these guys try out. There exist other 4-Gauge guns out there though.

Yeah, lithium primary cells (non rechargeable) have metallic lithium in them. Lithium ion rechargeable batteries only have some "ion" form of lithium in them, they don't really react with water. People have this assumption that they are going to explode when they get wet. I've ripped the tops off different cells and gotten them wet, not much happens, maybe a little bubbling.

It gets super hot, damages other cells around it, and sets fire to anything flammable nearby. Most batteries don’t like being short circuited, but LiIon has a high enough energy density to cause a lot of damage

The problem with elemental sodium is that the moisture in the air is sufficient to ignite it, that's why it's kept in a jar of oil. Once you remove the oil and expose the surface it's just a waiting game until it goes up in flames if it's a small piece, larger pieces will explode violently on contact with water. Mythbusters did a segment on the alkali metals trying to blow up a toilet or bathtub, something like that, but it wasn't as spectacular as some lab demonstrations I've seen go wrong. There's one on KZbin where the fume hood loses all it's glass after the teacher drops in a piece that's just a little too big lol.

Long cylinders default to side-long profile when flying through the air. I am not sure the aerodynamics that are involved in that but that is apparently their preferred orientation. I think I am remembering that correctly from when I saw it in a Veritasium video.

You should try putting a bead of sealed water on the tip of the charged battery, the water will mix with the Lithium nicely! I stumbled across this, it is a very interesting use of completely dead and unviable 18650 Cells. Maybe you should try buying up dead old phone batteries and using them to make some kind of improvised explosive target to hit. Of course make sure that it is legal to do so, I know that laws in the USA are far more lax than in Europe but you should still double check because it isn't worth getting into trouble over it.

Just an FYI the reason there was no fire and flame was because those batteries are most likely nickle metal hydride not lithium ion or lipo. Cheap batteries are almost always nmhd because its old technology

I had one these explode while I was spot-welding them in my room. It was placed in a weighted cylinder with a pretty much perfect hole for the battery. As it got heated up and shorted internally, it launched upwards on my ceiling where the impact caused a ton of flaming embers of some kind to fall all over my room (most of the embers were highly heated strips of copper or something). Battery itself ricochet off of the ceiling and landed on a shelf of an open closet and immediately set stuff on wire, was glowing hot. I wasn't injured as it flew right over me, but definitely wasn't a fan of the experience lol. If anyone is ever in a similar situation, you might hear a "hiss"; if you do, explosion is probably the next thing that will happen. There was also a LOT of black dust all over my room that I needed to clean up. Also, the battery in question was dead. I was just trying to fine-tune the spot welder's settings for a perfect nickel strip weld before I moved on to the rest. I didn't anticipate that a completely drained battery represented this level of danger, but sometimes you learn things the hard way.

For those curious, the "0" in 18650 is because the length measurement is in tenths of a mm. I was once told it meant the positive terminal is flat, and that button-top cells are 18655. I've also heard it denotes that the cell does not have inbuilt overvoltage protection. I've heard it means the cell is cylindrical. None of those is true.

I wonder if the battery would expand and better fit the barrel if inserted the other way round (so that it flies negative side first). The positive terminal has a pressure relief valve to prevent the battery from exploding if overcharged or overheated. It is usually just a thin piece of sheet metal that is partially cut. So that if the pressure outside the positive terminal is much higher than inside the battery, it should be able to break that valve and inflate the battery a bit. An inflated battery could leak less combustion gasses and gain more energy. It also could fly more straight, as it could better engage the barrel or the rifled attachment. It could also explode before hitting anything, or have a better chance of exploding if lodged in a soft target and being otherwise intact, due to the additional damage to the battery's electrodes.

3.5 volts is pretty dead for an 18650. Fully charged is 4.2 volts. Also im pretty sure fully charged ones are heavier and feel denser. At least they feel that way.

fully charged 18650 is like 4.2v, empty like 2.9-3.0 so 3.5 wud be less than half

When I was a kid, I would shoot diabolo wadcutter pellets through my air rifle with the skirt oriented forward, so when the pellet left the muzzle it was a hollow point and not a wadcutter. Being curious to know if they would continue to fly skirt forward, I shot them 25 yards into a ball of clay, where I recovered the pellet doubled in diameter. Would you be able to do the same with a sabot slug through a rifled barrel or rifled choke?

So as someone who used to work in the Gigafactory where Tesla's batteries are made. They are not in fact 18650 they are slightly longer and larger diameter than those. And that is just the iteration that was in use on the Model 3 at the time I was working there. Panasonic actually manufactures the batteries and are coming out with an improved version for testing every few months. So in the year + that I haven't been working there the "cells" that make up the car battery might not even be close anymore. on another note did you mean to make the 3DO icon in the tape on the first target?
