OpenFOAM & SimFlow are good (free) tools for this, briefly looking at the video, it looked like an old copy of flowsquare. in the past, I tweeted (to the Taofledermaus twitter account)a service that holds your hand (for amateurs) that a colleague mentioned his son started using in university... it escapes me atm... but I thought it would be ideal fans of this channel who want to try designing some things. EDIT: it was "SimScale" , link to tweet (jun 19) here: twitter.com/philverhey/status/876879794012663809 It's good to see some people taking this approach. there are options, I believe the youtube channel "Real Engineering" mentions an online service that offers free fluid dynamics software in one or more of his recent aircraft design videos.

the difference is that mass produced slugs are just that mass produced, they have to make allowances for ease of manufacture and such (there are something a big old machine can't do that a human can using hand tools) to make something like this would require extra manufacturing steps (not impossible just expensive) which wouldn't be a good idea for a big company. a single guy in a shed working with hand tools to make a handful of slugs can take more time and work more intricate designs because he doesn't have to worry about time and profit margins also it's easier to quality check a dozen rounds compared to a few thousand where only 1% of them may be checked for defects in any given day
@thugasaurusrex60047 жыл бұрын
hoot red I mean, these would be pretty expensive to produce, which is most likely why they aren't exactly mass produced. Also, the guy has a PhD in a field that constantly comes into contact with physics, so I'm sure he can do some math and figure out a good shape for something

mechanical scales are still mroe acurate than almost all electronic scales. we have one at work that can measure more than a metric ton with a tolerance within a hundred gramms (and adding just one more part would probably make it measure down to the gram if necessary). our new electronic scale has a tolerance of eight kilograms (that's more than sixteen pounds) we use the electronic one still because the mechanical one just takes too long to handle the ammounts we process but it's realyl amazing how technologies that are thousands of years old still outperform the new stuff just in sheer precision, not to mention production quality.

Харитон Круглов Alexey, great work - I found your channel - I'll have a look at it later on, but I'm curious about what lead versions of your darts would do - I'm guessing they would make enormous damage being heavier*, and acting differently on impact, but would the ballistics be vastly different? *(Using a scale I found online which says lead is 1.303 - 1.35 x more massive than casting brass, therefore the lead darts would be between 19.545 - 20.25gms) The scale actually said Brass (casting) 8400-8700 kg/cu.m and Lead 11340 kg/cu.m - I've no idea how true that is, but I'm sure you will. If it's a stupid question, then just say so 😄I don't have a PhD - that's for sure.
@LexsLavrov7 жыл бұрын
Lead by itself is too soft and can't survive G-force when shot. You need to have some hard case around lead. And the first version of this slug were made of hollow brass case and lead cast inside this cavity. But it takes too much effort and time to drill brass out. So I decided to go with solid brass. Aerodynamics is basically the same. Expanding version gives more drag due to flat nose but general trajectory is same.
@ianmacfarlane12417 жыл бұрын
Харитон Круглов Thanks for the response - I was curious, and even though I can't shoot, I love watching the various solutions that slug designers come up with. Every day is a school day, as they say. Take care. (I'll look forward to seeing your next design)

TAOFLEDERMAUS might want to try hitting up clearballistics or another ballistic gel site and see if they would be willing to donate some gel to your channel in exchange for you giving them a shout out. Just a thought.
@TheWoundChannel7 жыл бұрын
robert denicola they typically don't do that since the people who watch these test videos usually go out and buy Ammo, not gel.

Great video as always, and you should definitely consider doing more long videos like this as long as you have enough rounds to make it feesable. The videos of homemade rounds are some of my favorites. Just how weird and complex some of the designs are is really intriguing, especially when they work flawlessly like these did.

If you want bonus points for saying it like a true slav: Doctor Lah-vrohv. Cyrillic vowels almost always have they same sound in every word/name thus a Cyrillic 'o' will always sound like "oh" :)

It is natural. Because bid companies want profits only. Amateur wants anything but profit.

That was a damn impressive homemade round. Amazing that a foam sabot works that well. Those hot loads were hella nice too. #moarrecoil

It seems all the foam sabots ended up landing around the table.

Those solid darts with a hot load looked they could go through a pistol rated vest quiet easily. Thanks for the vid as always.

You know, this arrow slug Idea is not bad at all. Make is a little shorter to fit in the shell, sharpen the fins to cut all the way through and still have the four pieces making their own wound channels. Very Nasty well done Dr. Astronomer (who must be really pissed off at somebody !!!! )

Real astronomer never gets pissed off :) I got Benelli Supernova chambered for 12x89 supermagnum so I do not have problems with length.

that'S the difference between scientists and normal people. you tell a normal person taht you disagree with them and they'll get pissed. you tell a scientist that he'S wrong, he'll get exited because he might learn something new.

In USSR any rifled weapon was banned for civilans. So people have to hunt with smoothbore. Thus we have great experience and great variety of shotgun slugs. In fact, this dart was initially designed by Dmitry Shiryaev to provide rifle accuracy for smoothbore shotgun.
@clouster757 жыл бұрын
Харитон Круглов Not quite correct. My grand dad used to hunt with Mosin (KO-44) rifle, and rifled hunting rifles were generally available as well - TOZ-16/17/18 for example. The thing is that using shotguns were way cheaper, and thats actual reason why they are more popular.
@holyravioli57955 жыл бұрын
@@LexsLavrov That's bullshit, you can own shotguns in Russia and after two years of owning a shotgun you can buy a rifle of almost any type.
