Cast iron has lower mechanical properties and more defects than forged steel.

No casting involved. Just a giant block of hammer forged steel with a hole in it.

Making a specially shaped forging is much more expensive when you are only making one part.

It was forged, not cast - and forging is very difficult to do precisely. It needed a lot of ‘extra’ so there would not be a dent or something somewhere that would mess up a critical dimension. If there is a lot of something being made, then it’s possible to use precision dies and it’s not so bad. They cost a lot of money to make though. But even then, any bearing surface or interface needs to be machined.
