If you can get forging shot blasted first it will help save yoyr inserts from the oxides

Nice video as always. Can you do more broken tap removal videos with EDM? I always liked that.

what's the reason you didn't use the 100 degree edge of the C insert for roughing?

Too bad the ram doesn't fit inside the bore, then you could just program to the other side of the bore and run the chuck in reverse.

Fascinating process, just wonder why the casting could have not been shaped more to reduce the amount of machining?

Cast iron has lower mechanical properties and more defects than forged steel.

No casting involved. Just a giant block of hammer forged steel with a hole in it.

Making a specially shaped forging is much more expensive when you are only making one part.

It was forged, not cast - and forging is very difficult to do precisely. It needed a lot of ‘extra’ so there would not be a dent or something somewhere that would mess up a critical dimension. If there is a lot of something being made, then it’s possible to use precision dies and it’s not so bad. They cost a lot of money to make though. But even then, any bearing surface or interface needs to be machined.
