Sit back, relax and get ready to find out everything you need to know about Lithium Ion and Lithium Iron Phosphate LiFePO4 12V batteries with our resident 12V expert Cahn. Lithium batteries offer a couple of huge benefits over typical lead acid batteries including the fact that they’re super lightweight, they have a high energy density (lots of power in a small package) and they have a much longer cycle life.
In this video we cover the difference between different types of Lithium Ion and Lithium Iron Phosphate batteries, the difference between LiFePO4 and AGM batteries, how Lithium batteries ‘work’ and how to get the most out of them including charging and storage tips. Finally we cover what to look for when doing your own research and focus on how important it is to get a battery with a high quality Battery Management System or BMS.

Thanks. This was very informative. I live in New Jersey - and it occasionally gets pretty cold here. I keep my LiPo battery in the basement along with an AGM and an inverter (and a bunch of other stuff) in case of losing electricity. I really learned a lot from this presentation, including not keeping the LiPo battery on the trickle charger like I do with my AGM battery.

Great video. I was hoping to get more detail around charging. I have the Kings 120 AH Lifepo4 and a kings 25A DCDC charger and also a victron 12/15 smart charger. I'm wondering firstly, is it ok to leave my battery permanently connected to the DCDC charger? I've tracked the voltage supplied to the battery when fully charged, and it seems to supply more of a absorption level voltage (14.6V if I recall correctly) when I'd expect more of a float charge, say, 13.4V. Is the DCDC working correctly? Also, what are the best bulk, absorption, and float charge voltages for these batteries? I find the package insert with the battery was low on detail, and indicated a very high float charge, over 14V as I recall. Any ideas out there? Would love to hear from the channel on this. 🙏🏼

Great stuff 👍 Now you just need to also sell high quality battery boxes with built-in high quality DC-DC Chargers and MPPT Solar controllers. A much better quality than the flimsy basic battery boxes you currently sell. This is an opportune time for me, as I'm in the market for a lithum battery to replace my disasterous BainTech PowerTop V3, that only lasted 18 months. So I hope you also have a new range of better quality battery boxes coming. Including for the 200Ah Lithum battery you have shown here. 👌

Great presentation with a lot of info to absorb. The percentage charged is confusing and its impact on the BMS. At 10 volts my BMS shutdown, but the battery protection on the Kings 90l fridge goes as low as 9.6 volts. I used this, and appear to have killed the BMS on my new 120 AH LiPo4 battery. Even on the high setting the protection shuts off at 11.1 volts which is (according to your chart) about 10% discharge of battery capacity. The battery I purchased from 4WDSupaCentre had no documentation with it, is this normal? as I had no real idea of the problems I have caused myself- now I need a charger with a 'wake up BMS' function. Cheers for the presso.

Great overview and one piece of information I would really appreciate is how to keep the lifepo4 below 30 degrees when sitting in a parked vehicle on a hot day. Specifically, I have a 120 amp lifepo4 in a battery box I built supporting 12v/240, MPPT, DC-DC charger, inverter, shunt etc. The one challenge left is how to keep the battery cool when parked on a hot day. I've thought about using a closed circut liquid cooling system used in gaming PCs, or perhaps an evaporative portable cooling system. However each of these solutions as problems/limitations. Any ideas on a suitable cooling system that I've proposed or something else would be greatly appreciated.

However, I looked at a company in QLD that custom makes quality solarscreens for all windows for about $400 so I might go for that option first as it would handy the whole vehicle cool anyway and not just the battery as there are other electronics such as fridge, computers etc.

When on the road (Caravan hooked up Ect) I have a 75 Ltr Fridge and use the connected inverter often. When I am home and using the car locally, the fridge is turned off and there is nothing running off the battery so the DC to DC charger is still topping up the battery each time I run the car. Thanks for the excellent video. I’m used to AGM batteries for motorcycles. As they can sit unused for weeks, I constantly keep the battery under trickle charge. I’m confused as to what is best practice for LiFePo4 batteries in the same scenario: leave them be (anyway they have low discharge) or use a specialised trickle charger? And in the second case, some chargers have a specific “LiFePo4 mode” others just a generic “lithium mode”. Are these different? Do I risk damage using “lithium mode” for LiFePo4 batteries? Thanks for any help.
@bruceskousen5451
@bruceskousen5451 2 жыл бұрын
You are not going to damage your lifepo4 battery with a conventional charger. It just might take longer for a full charge. Some chargers have an equalizer mode. Lifepo4 batteries do not need/use this mode. Sometimes the equalizer mode goes above 14.6 volts, which isn't good for lifepo4 batteries, but the battery's BMS should shut down any charge input once the battery is fully charged. If you plan to not use your lifepo4 battery for a while, it's best to keep it at 50-80% charged (50% is the ideal range).
@nordic5490
@nordic5490 Жыл бұрын
@@bruceskousen5451 you should definitely not charge a lithium iron phosphate (LFP) battery with a conventional charger. Charging above 3.4v per cell will shorten the life of that cell. The conventional charger cannot monitor individual cells, amd will not balance the cells. What happens is, not all cells are equal. One cell will reach the max allowed 3.4v before the others. However, the total combined battery string voltage has not yet reached the 'max battery voltage, and the charger keeps on going, when it should have throttled back. Now that cell goes over voltage. Because that cell suffers degradation, its internal resistance can increase, and its capacity to take charge decreses. Both things lead to the 3.4v being reached even quicker next charge cycle, even earlier than last time. Eventually you have a dead cell. I know someone who did an ev conversion 10yrs ago, and I asked him why he hadnt installed cell balancing during charging (standard fare for Lithium anything in the RC world). "The kit supllier said it wasnt necessary". I warned him about wrecking a cell quickly, and that was exactly what happened. A very expensive mistake. We are talking several $k.

@bruceskousen5451 Жыл бұрын
@@nordic5490 a conventional charger is NOT going to hurt a lifepo4 battery. It’s just not very efficient. The BMS in a lifepo4 battery has overcharge/overcurrent protection built in and will shut it down before any damage could occur, unless, of course, the BMS is defective…

Chan a great and very informative video. I have a question about connecting LiFePO4 batteries in parallel, if two of these 120Ah batteries were connected in parallel, making a 240Ah battery, can you charge and discharge the combined battery at 200Ah? Or are there other limiting factors that means the charge/discharge rate should be limited slightly, say 190Ah, or 180Ah? Or is the rate simply limited to the single battery charge/discharge rate of 100Ah? Cheers.
@spartannomad3036
@spartannomad3036 2 жыл бұрын
With lithium batteries you can connect in parallel but they have to be the same type and capacity ( buy them at the same time & hopefully from the same batch)- the limiting factor is the BMS as to how many you can connect in parallel.
@zeealpal
@zeealpal Жыл бұрын
One important aspect when using batteries in parallel (especially LiFePO4) if you want to increase your discharge current is to wire them in opposite order on positive and negative, ensuring the same cable length from each battery to the load. E.g: Inverter (+) ==== B1 (+) ==== B2 (+) Inverter (-) ==== B2 (-) ==== B1 (-) Otherwise B1 would supply the greater current and discharge faster as it has the least losses to the inverter.

Hi Cahn, great presentation and explanation - well done. 2 Questions: I have 2x 120aH LIFEPO4 Kings batteries. I've been looking at a simple LIFEPO4 charger that runs at 14.6 V (20A) but does not have a built-in tailing off of the current towards the end of the charge cycle. Is this Ok and will the BMS take care of the final charge time to reduce current from the charger? 2). How can you regulate the LIFEPO4 charger to stop the charging at say 95% full level? Do you need a sophisticated charger to do this? Thanks!
@4wdsupacentreAu
@4wdsupacentreAu 9 ай бұрын
What chargers are you looking at - if it’s lithium specific it should still be ok Lithium doesn’t need a tailing current it just need constant current (bulk) and then constant voltage (absorption) which will naturally tail off as battery voltage gets closer and closer to charger voltage and eventually equalises. At this point (or near this point) the charger should switch off As for the second question yes you’d need a programmable charger where you dictate the final charging voltage! Cheers, Cahn

The DCDC will indicate the battery is full when it starts a slow flashing pattern on either the alternator or solar light (whichever is connected and charging) So it stays on for 2 seconds then off for 2s You can start using it anytime really - the usable voltage range is ideally between about 12V (10% remaining) and 13.6V (100% charged) As a note while it is actually being charged it’ll reach about 14.5V max! Cheers, Cahn

You say that if you use the Lifepo4 battery from 100% to 0% repeatedly you would get 3000 cycles. Does this then mean that the AH rating of the battery is useable capacity ? ie @ 80% DOD

I’ve got 2x 209ah lithium batteries and both after a day charging off a 250w solar panel separately have tested at 13.2v. Will this still be ok to run them in parallel at this voltage?

Hi Cahn / 4WD Supacentre, I've just bought the 120 lithium with battery box and 200w solar blanket. Is it okay to use the blanket with solar controller to charge battery while at campsite? Or do I specifically need a lithium compatible solar controller and blanket? Great presentation, thank you.

Hi Paul, If it's the MPPT controller, it is not compatible with Lithium. If you have the PWM it will be fine Cheers, Mia

@@4wdsupacentreAu Hi Mia, thank you for your reply. It's the MPPT controller that I received with my King's solar blanket. Can you see another way? Could I run it through the kings 25amp DC/DC charger at the campsite, even if the DC/DC charger is not in the car? Or should I just get a PWM solar controller for solar blanket to lithium battery in the battery box at the campsite as will be away from the vehicle? Thank you very much Mia. Paul.

@@paulb3214 Hi mate, You can definitely use a Kings 25A DCDC charger - Ideally they should be permanently mounted in the vehicle but you could use one externally. Just make sure it's out of the weather and protected. Otherwise, the PWM is another option. You'd simply connect the blanket to the solar lead, to the PWM and then onto the battery itself. The PWM should be set to b04 in the settings to suit Kings Lithium Batteries. Cheers, Mitch

If as you state it’s better to only charge one’s lithium battery to 80% how if it’s attached to a lithium battery charger and a solar controller, and B2B, both of which in my case are Victron, can one limit the charge level. My Kia Niro has the ability to set charge limits but that doesn’t seem to be the case with my Motorhome leisure battery.

Hey Cahn....Is it better to have a lithium or AGM battery as the second/dual in the vehicle with fixed solar panels and dc dc charger as this will likely keep the battery charged to full most of the time? You stated that its better to have a lithium stored at 50% charge. So after a camping trip and the fridge is disconnected for weeks at a time, whats best mate?
@4wdsupacentreAu

G'day Paul, LiFePO4 batteries have so many benefits that it's hard not to immediately just say go Lithium... but you've raised some good points! 1. Most DC-DC Chargers that have specific Lithium charging profiles shouldn't have a float setting. So as soon as the battery reaches 100% the unit will disconnect and only start charging again once the battery is discharged again - this prevents the solar from constantly trickle charging the battery at 100% SOC. If you had an AGM in the same scenario, the permanent solar would need to constantly trickle charge the battery for those weeks when it's not in use to prevent possibly damage (sulphation) occuring in the battery. With the lithium the DC-DC charger would probably not even need to turn on in those weeks as the lithium would be sitting at close to full charge anyway. The ultimate for a lithium would be to charge it up before a weekend away, use it throughout the weekend and then if you weren't going to use it for a month or so, disconnect it so it's sitting at less-than-full charge... then charge it up before you next use it! As I said in the video, if you can avoid the very extreme ends of the Lithium voltage range, you'll get the most out of the battery, but even if you were cycling the lithium from 100% to 0% to 100% daily you'd still get ~2000 cycles out of it, compared to probably 300 cycles in the case of an AGM. That's a difference of about 5 years of use compared to 1 year of use! Cheers, Cahn

@@4wdsupacentreAu Hey mate...thanks for the info.....So if I go Lithium, theres no real need to put fixed solar panels on the roof if I have portable ones to top the battery up only when needed? But if I stick with the AGM I have, fixed panels may be the better option so it keeps trickle feeding? I go camping for 1 or 2 nights on average so sounds like either battery (I have 138AH AGM) or a 120AH Lithium would last the whole time just running an Engel and some lights and maybe a few cups of coffee through inverter...In any case, I have the portable 250W solar panel and a 200W solar blanket for backup...does this sound right/adequate?

dear supa center I want to put a solar installation in my shed, preferably in a thick metal closed or an official fire hazzard closed with a small non-functioning freezer box for battery protection against heat and cold and its rubber band on the lid is non air intake rubber os it is seald last summer we had temperatures outside of 35+ degrees Celsius and in my shed more than 50+ degrees Celsius now in the winter in the Netherlands it has almost never fallen below -10 in recent years now my idea was to use an old non-functional freezer box to insulate the battery`s against the heat and the cold what do you think about this ??? is this a good way to insulate and use it as a firebox?
