I do worry about this, as I adopted a 16 year old, who sleeps a lot and is naturally aloof. I suspect her previous owner didn't interact with her that much. And she was deeply traumatised when she was surrendered to the RSPCA. But thanks to a bunch of different educational videos, like this one. I'm confident she's settled in, and has imprinted and bonded with me in her own, very subtle way.😸

Adopting a 16-year-old cat, especially one that’s a bit on the aloof side and has gone through a lot, is such a kind-hearted move. It’s great to hear you're picking up on those little signs that she’s getting comfy and bonding with you in her own chill way. It's so great that you're committed to making her twilight years as lovely as possible, and it seems like she's recognizing that, too, even if she's showing it in super subtle ways.😸💕

@@Gothymothmoth Oh, Trixie and I have been house mates for 6 months now. And definitely by the end of month 1 she has made this house her home. I mostly worry about her quality of life because she sleeps literally all the time. But that appears to be what she wants. Thanks for your empathy, and I'm glad your mother got her cat out of that situation. All the best to everyone.

@@Feline_Fanatics She's not my first senor, so I do have some experience caring for retired cats. though it's an ever ongoing learning experience. My previous cat Arthur - who I sadly lost to cancer last tear - was an ex-stray and the friendliest cat in the world. So I'm mostly getting adjusted to the "worlds apart" difference in personalities. Hence my concern that Trixie could be depressed. Turns out she just likes snoozing a lot.

Thank you very much for this video. My cat has to be put on a medication that causes depression and now I'll be watching for these signs

Feed the cat closer to the door, or sit outside when you feed. Don't get too close and do not try to trap it in the house! Go slowly and let the cat learn that you are trustworthy. If you already have any pets, consider how a new cat could upset the pets already with you. ❤ Good luck, and thank you for caring about the cats. ❤

Patience. Make a shelter for the cat outside, feed it regularly, and it the weather gets really cold you may be able to persuade it in. But in the meantime be very happy it hangs around your yard.

Trying to win over a feral cat can definitely be a challenge, but it's so rewarding when you make progress! Here are a few tips that might help: Start by establishing a routine, like feeding at the same times each day, so the cat starts to expect and trust your presence. Try sitting nearby quietly during feeding times to help them get used to you. Using a calm voice, talk to the cat to help them become familiar with your presence without feeling threatened. You could also try leaving a worn shirt or blanket outside to get them used to your scent. Gradually, they might start coming closer. It can take a lot of time for them to feel comfortable enough to come inside🐱💖🏡

If I wasn't old I'd become a self-certified cat therapist. Not because it would change the cat, the cat is fine. The owner isn't inelegant enough to own a cat and have money in their bank account. They would still have the cat ...
