I hate when people ask me to move my seat. I travel solo most of the time. I'm also scared to fly and prep my seat in advance with the airlines. A lot of the time, this arrangement can cost an extra $50-$200. So it grinds my gears when someone aggressively asks me to switch, because s/he was separated from a spouse/sibling/whoever. PICK YOUR SEATS IN ADVANCE, PEOPLE. IT IS CALLED THE INTERNET.
@jnx37
@jnx37 8 жыл бұрын
We always choose our seats ahead of time. Despite our planning we have been split up several times and had to ask ppl to switch because we don't want our kids sitting alone on a transoceanic flight. They need help occasionally and we'd rather ask ppl to switch than to parent our kids.
@blondwayfarer

+jnx37 I'd ask customer service and the check-in desks to help first. If I had no luck, then I'd ask the flight attendants for assistance. Usually people will volunteer but try not to pressure one person. 😊 If I paid an extra $200, I'm not saying "no" to be mean.

+Rachel Elizabeth The amount of times we've booked particular seats online but then our seats were changed when we got to the gate. It's ok with older children - but when they put your 2 year old all by themselves five rows ahead of you....I can't tell you how frustrating that is. Frustrating for us, as well as for the people we need to talk to. How awful would it be for that other person to have some random 2 year old sitting next to them scared and crying for their mother? Drives me crazy that airlines do this. Airlines!! If we dang well book seats, please honour that booking! And when we say, "Uhm - our kid is two....." and the gate agent says, "Well, you'll just have to ask people on the plane to switch". GAH!
@blondwayfarer
@blondwayfarer 8 жыл бұрын
Airlines need to honor their bookings better, I agree. I've only ever had my seat changed once, but they moved me closer to the front of the plane so it wasn't a big deal. The problem, like I said, is when I pay extra money to reserve "choice" seats (American airlines does this) in economy. These are usually located over the wing and near the front of the cabin. I feel bad saying "no," but an extra $200 is a lot of money and I don't wanna ask strangers to pay me! :( If all seats in economy cost the same amount, it'd be less of an issue. I would just appreciate it if people directed their frustration where it belongs: the airlines' botched booking, not me.

madiantin I know your post was a while ago when you posted,but separating a child under the age of I believe 12, is illegal and the airline cannot do this, it is up to the air crew to sort it out,and there is no way that I would have allowed my two year old to sit by themselves next to strangers.

When Flying Southwest Airlines a couple will sit one person in the window seat and the other in the aisle, leaving the middle seat open in the hopes that nobody will dare sit there and they will have the whole row to themselves. That NEVER WORKS because the flights are always sold out. Instead the couple gets pissed at the person who had the audacity to sit in between them and foil their big plan to get an extra seat for free. Then they talk over you the whole way and treat you like you did something wrong. Listen, you knew, or should have known, that flights are booked solid these days. Sit next to your own damn relative because you are not fooling anybody and just making the trip miserable for everybody. That is all!

From a solo travellers perspective, nothing annoys me more than being asked by a couple or friends travelling together whether I can swap seats with them especially after I've settled in, and normally the seat you're exchanging is much less desirable. I remember the first time I ever flew, I was sitting by a mom and her baby. I heard plenty of people grumble about her baby and she kept apologizing when her baby would make any sound. She was clearly exhausted and it obviously wasn't their first flight that day. At one point, she fell asleep with the baby, but the baby woke up first. I felt bad for her, so I dug through her baby bag and gave him some baby cereal. When he was satisfied, I gave him my keys to play with and talked to him for a while. After about 30 minutes, the mom woke up. She felt awful, but I told her not to worry. I had fun playing with the little guy and she deserved a nap. She looked like she was about to cry when she thanked me. I didn't think anything of it at the time, because I didn't realize how rude people could be to parents on airlines. When did people stop genuinely caring about those around them?

+woltersworld Speaking of Children on a plane... My husband and I were travelling from Florence to Madrid last summer and we ended up seated next to a child of maybe 7 years old. Right away I thought it was odd that the mother was sitting across the aisle from him. (Yes you could say those were the only seats left however I feel like if you are travelling with a small child it is your responsibility to make sure you are sitting with them) Anyhow this child was the worst. The entire flight he was kicking the seats in front of him, grabbing at my husbands things, letting the tray fall down then putting it up to let it fall again, yelling to his grandmother who was sitting at the back of the plane, running up and down the aisles, yelling mom mom mom mom mom to his mother who I kid you not pretended to be asleep the entire time! Not once did she even attempt to control him. The flight attendant came over three times and asked her to control the child! At one point the snack cart came by and he started grabbing things off of it and his mother literally just watched him do it and did nothing. The flight attendant had to sort of slap his hands away and the mom still said nothing. He was ripping up all the in flight magazines in front of him while his mom watched so my husband took them away from him and told him to stop. We kept looking at his mother and telling her to do something and she literally would just turn away and pretend to be asleep again. It was the worst experience I have ever had on a plane. I was so upset with the child but more upset with the mother. I get it maybe you are exhausted and your child is a horror and he has been driving you crazy for your entire vacation but that is not the rest of the flights issue! At least try to control him! Ughhh anyway that is an experience I will never forget.

The general rule is: if you're stuck in the middle seat, that person usually get's the arm rests. The people on the aisles and windows, have the option to shift themselves to a more comfortable position since there's no one sitting on one of the sides next to them. The middle seat person has no choice, and no room to shift. Therefore, generally, the person in the middle should get the arm rests.
@caseyvee4419
@caseyvee4419 8 жыл бұрын
+lostmoon77 I agree, but usually it is just the more agressive person who ends up with the armrests.
@lostmoon77
@lostmoon77 8 жыл бұрын
+Casey Vee right. So, when that happens, observe when that person isn't using the armrest. Then, stake your position. He or she will soon realize that the middle person really has the shortened of the stick, and won't be as aggressive. And will even give you the whole thing. Now, sitting next to a fat person, is more challenging.

I think it's more about aggressive armrest holders who are so obsessive over their position they won't move- that's why he kept bringing up the fact he nor his family members could pass because they'd continually sit down, locked down on the arm rests. (People do, do this, their insecurity leads to their wanton control of the situation which is just uncomfortable and turns them into a total pain in the ass for everyone.) I think Mark travels enough to understand the general rule of seats per armrest, window, and aisle leg room.

Grabbing the back of each aisle seat when you're walking, especially in the middle of the night on a long-haul flight. Its hard enough to try to sleep in the aisle seat with out having some one making you bounce up & down every half an hour or so.

I travel with a service dog... I have 2... but only travel on a plane with my small breed service dog... many people get loud and obnoxious that my dog is in my lap, or he's going to be a noisy dog (he's a 3lb chihuahua)... no one really notices him because when he's working he's not playing or barking... he only makes a noise if my blood sugar drops or he senses I'm going into a panic attack or anxiety issues.

Agree 100%. I just came back from my holiday a week ago and this woman in the seat in front of me was coughing and spluttering for the entire flight - at the start no one else was coughing, by the end there were at least 10 people coughing in and around this area of the plane. I don't know if that's just group psychology or coincidence or what, but the over the next few days I'd developed a cough as well. It's disgusting, wear a mask if you're fucking ill on a plane or don't fly at all. Really wound me up, that, because I was perfectly healthy before that flight.

Yes, that can be annoying but if you don't tell them that you don't want it right now after listening for a while, you do have yourself to blame as well. I was on the other end once. I talked to someone who seemed to listen very interested, which was why I kept talking and when I later listend to music on my headphones he talked behing my back about how annoying I was as he thought I didn't hear him. Then I took my headphones off and said "Why didn't you just tell me earlier?" She didn't really have an answer the that. Of course I do know that people want to be polite but there are polite ways out of a conversation as well.

On a trip from Chile to France I had a man next to me who did not stop moving, singing to what he has listening and literally emulating as if he was playing the drums with his food tray. And in front of him an English dude was seating and he looked behind him a lot of times with a "wtf is wrong with this guy" so many times... I felt his pain. He did not stop, not once through the 14 hours...

Big thumbs up about the kids thing. I am not a father, but neither am I the one to complain loudly - unless parents who don't care let their kids run wild. But then I complain about the parents, not about the kids. The kids don't know better if their parents don't tell them how to behave and keep them entertained during a flight. I have had kids on a plane that were a real pain in the ... (you know where), kicking my seat back for hours, screaming all the time - but I also had the opposite - when I flew from Detroit to Orlando some years ago, the girl sitting in my row (~4 yrs old I'd guess) asked her daddy sitting between her and me as we were approaching Orlando "...but daddy, where IS florida? And where is Mickey?" 100% cuteness. :-)

Rule number 2 doesn't apply if there's 3 seats side by side. The middle guy has the worst seat so he gets both armrests. The guy by the windows gets a window, the guy by the aisle gets extra leg room. So I don't mind if the guy in the middle gets both armrests. Of course if it's a large row of 4 or 5 seats in the middle, then you have to share. I think the thing that annoyed me the most on a plane, is that we were all seated in our designated spots. Plenty of empty seats on the plane for people to (almost) all get a window seat. But we were told to wait until seatbelt signs turned off before doing that. But some guys didn't wait and crossed the whole plane to take those seats, so the guy next to me couldn't get the window seat he was waiting for in front of us... I also got the opposite once. I was alone in a row of 3, by the window. And then this woman comes from the back, and took both seats left, kicking me while she was sleeping. Wtf...

I was on a flight from Los Angeles to Germany and the woman in front of me was traveling with her extremely hyperactive son, her friend and that woman's son. The hyper kid was completely out of control but the mom spent the entire flight ignoring him and talking with her friend. He was yelling, kicking seats, moving his seat back and forth, and he manage to spill a cup of orange juice between the seats and onto my shoes. The mom didn't even apologize. During her conversation with her friend, it came to light that the kid was on ritalin, but she had withheld his meds because she didn't want him to be off his schedule due to the time difference. I understand the logic, but if you're going to do something like that, you need to be on top of the situation and do everything you can to keep your child calm. She did nothing.

11:11 Mark, you might be interested to know that it's not the food itself that causes it to be flavourless - airlines actually OVERspice the food. It's a combination of factors: dry air diminishes taste and the pressurisation of the cabin also causes the mucus membranes to swell, making it even more difficult to taste what you're eating. Aditionally, the constant white noise produced by all the mechanics and electronics appears to draw your attention away from flavour as well.

The thing that really annoys me on a plane is reclining seats. On one flight I had a glass of orange juice on the table and the woman in front suddenly reclined the seat back tipping orange juice all over my lap. I was pinned in and also suffer with claustraphobia. I asked an air hostess for some napkins. She ignored that and told the person in front to pull her seat up, which of course was a relief, but I still couldn't move unless I dropped a puddle of orange juice all over the floor and my bags. Luckily the kind gentleman next to me got up and went to the bathroom to get some hand towels so I could dry myself off. I have no idea why the seats should be able to recline. There's no room and it's not practical. Grr.

Because or seats was at the far back of the plane we weren't able to recline them, so she told the person in front of her to please not recline his seat, and he answered with "we'll see" - so guess what, he fully reclined the seat not long after that. He didn't pull up his seat until a stewardess told him to - after she had seen my friend pacing in the aisle (because it was such small space between her and the chair in front of her) and told her that she couldn't just keep doing that (she was understanding when my friend told her the reason why).

I think it's perfectly fine to take both armrests if you are in the middle. The aisle seat gets extra legroom and easy aisle access (1 armrest) the window gets a view and somewhere to lean their head (1 armrest) and the middle gets to sit uncomfortably with nowhere to stretch their legs or rest their head, they deserve both armrests, if the window and aisle got 2 each then the middle would get none.

Awesome channel! I LOVE your work! I guess that I am weird, but I thoroughly enjoy flying w/ people's kids! I travel a lot in America and now that our kids are grown, the wife and I are investigating overseas travel. (I'll prolly watch all of your stuff multiple times!) On the kids thing - recently a woman was having a bit of trouble w/ her son crying (he was 4 and terrified) and the comments from other passengers was so bad that she started to cry herself. I was sitting across the aisle and it got so bad that I stood up and proved that American Southerners can be way more rude than anyone else on earth and told the woman to swap seats w/ me. The look on her face,....I am sure that she was terrified.... In about 3 minutes I had her son laughing and talking a blue streak. Finally, she figured out that I wasn't the "booger Man" and we had such a pleasant conversation that a 3 hour flight turned into what seemed like less than an hour! I couldn't help but noticing that when we debarked, none of the complainers could look me in the eye,.... Really folks,.... you have a lot of people in a small space, and it isn't like you can get up and leave,.... a little kindness: a tiny bit of compassion and understanding; can turn a long flight into a short hop and all ya really gotta do is try to be a bit more considerate of other people's situation and feelings - and it doesn't cost a dime,...it's FREE! :=))

Adding to #9: I've been on flights before where the flight was landing late, and people were going to miss their connecting flights if they didn't get off immediately. They let the flight attendants know, the flight attendants double checked their claims and then made an announcement asking everyone to stay seated until those people / groups exited the plane. Some people were still buttholes and try to get off with them, but most people understood and stayed seated.

Great video. From my own experience as a frequent flier, I never put my seat back on a domestic flight unless it is a red eye and everyone is sleeping. On long overseas flights same thing, not during meal services and wait until the lights go down and most people are trying to sleep. If I'm at an aisle or window, I more or less cede the armrests to the center seat within reason. If I am next to a larger person, I do insist the armrest in between is down, I've had people sit down and try to raise them. You have the right idea with kids. I did have a flight from BWI to Aruba. Parents with two kids were sitting on opposite aisle seats with the kids on the aisle on row ahead. My wife and I had the center and window next to one of them. This kid kicked the seat in front for 3.5 hours with no intervention from the parents. When we started getting off, the man in front of him was glaring at me. I did inform him sort of loudly that this was not my child and I would never have allowed any of my children to kick his seat like that on a flight. Not sure why they parents allowed this and even more why thy didn't put them next to them. Surely if they were able to get four aisle seats they could have rather had a center and window for the kids next to them.

I'm not, "that guy," that would actually vocally complain about someone's KIDS in public. That's beyond rude, but I'd be dishonest to not admit that my inner monologue consists of groans if I'm by a kid. I'd never say it aloud though.

Maybe I've been lucky, but I've only run into one entitled jerk ever. This guy tried to hog half a luggage compartment for his laptop, and when a flight attendant took it out to put my bigger bag in, he went NUTS! He grabbed my bag, shoved it in my face, and told me to get lost because "I was here first!" When the attendant came back to sort it out, he chewed her out because "I'm a paying customer; why do you care about them more?" Delta removed him from the flight after some maneuvering (thank god).

Monique J well, some people doesn’t have the money to go to a hospital due to high medical cost. Sometimes, aisle seats aren’t available at all. That’s the risk of you sitting on an aisle seat, which is getting bothered by someone needing to go to the bathroom.

Good advice, thanks man. I enjoy watching your vlogs. I'd like to know from you, if in this situation where someone is hogging your seat or the floor space to store their stuff, how do you tell them to move it without having to resort to getting aggressive or rude? Must one call a flight attendant over? Or if someone's seat is reclined too far back and is in your space?

I'm not sure it was worse. People rarely complained about the smoke, if I remember correctly. Not because they refrained themselves from complaining, but because they didn't feel bothered. Plus, it's possible that people had more manners at that time.

+Browns Fan I don't remember why I said that. Maybe I was replying to some comment that has been deleted. Or maybe I meant that people used not to feel as entitled as they do today (i.e. they thought more "I should either accept the rules of the places I go to or not go there" instead of "the rules of the places I go to have to be good for me"). Really, I don't remember.

When we landed in Montreal, the couple sitting in front were really surprised to have NOT NOTICED a small child sitting right behind them! I'd add not bringing stuff for any kids traveling with you to do to the list. I don't care if the flight is 30 minutes or 20 hours BRING things to that will keep the kids traveling with you entertained. I love children & enjoy talking to them & interacting & playing with them. That said I don't enjoy your little darling who is behaving like a brat because you didn't bother to bring things for them to do. I'm single & don't have kids so I'm not going to have child appropriate entertainment items with me & I shouldn't be expected to entertain your kid because you're too lazy, inconsiderate, uncaring etc. to be bothered to bring things for your kid to do.

A big pet peeve of mine are people who don't make reservations ahead of time then expect everyone who did to change seats. I booked an aisle seat so I didn't have to squeeze in between 2 people. if you or your kid don't want to squeeze in, book ahead or take a different flight where you can book the seats you want. I've almost missed connections several times after being bumped from row 6 to the last row or two in the plane. A man with kids was disgusting enough to have the flight attendant separate me and my 82yr old grandmother on the way to her medical appointments so he could sit with his kids up front. I explained our connection to the flight attendant who thought I was a moron and assured me everyone would allow me to exit the plane first so I could make our connection. I was the last person off the plane and they paged us continuously as we bolted as fast as we could. Then another selfish moron didn't think he should have to get out of our again row 6 seat because we were late. Of course the 82yr old put of breath woman can hike back to your reserved seat to save you the inconvenience...
