If you want to be "nice" to the other passengers, control your kids if you have any. I have been on flights with kids kicking the back of my seat, pulling my hair, etc. Also take them to the lavatory if you have to change them!

Controlling your kids is not hard. I have 5. They know if they act up they'll get a meeting Jesus party. Try taking your titty out of their mouth and discipline them! American kids are spoiled due to the fact that most are not disciplined. And if you dare say anything to a parent with an a$$hole child, have fun!

@@secarpenter951 AMEN! My kids have flown all over starting when they were little. We had "practice" flights long before the trip. Sugar free chewable mints or candy or ear plugs for clogged ears and THINGS to keep them OCCUPIED. I did all this because they were MY KIDS not the children of the people around me. If I keep turning around glaring at you & your kids - DISCIPLINE THEM! Stop closing your eyes or turning your head like they're not yours. Teaching age appropriate accountability starts young. Obviously not in the infancy stage but if they're smart enough to use your iPhone or iPad, they can behave.

I loved the thing about being nice to crew. I would like to add that it also helps to be nice to staff at check in. Here is my story: At Boston international LH had a problem as the plane that arrived was close to 100 seats short compared to booked passengers. Lots of angry people shouting at staff complaining and threats to sue airline and so forth. My aproach was different: I said "I know that this is hell for you and I apreciate what you try to do in a difficult situation. Is there anything you can do for me so I can get home? Any of the following destination airport will be fine". Seconds later I had been rebooked and was only a couple of hours late. Being nice helped!

Best long haul flights I've had are when I've flown alone. Flew from Manchester to JFK and back with American and didn't get an allocated seat with my boarding pass at check in. Arrived at the gate to be asked if I was strong and capable enough to open the exit in an emergency said yes and got an exit seat with loads of leg room in both directions. Another time I flew from Manchester to Singapore with Singapore Airlines and I had an empty seat next to me. A flight attendant asked me if I'd give up my seat so that 2 friends on the same flight could sit next to each other. I said yes and to my surprise the attendant took me in to Business Class where I spent the 15 hours drinking free Champagne!

Very lucky, AA was on the other hand my worst long haul experiences, entertainment was offensively inoffensive all round, food was bad, one time they even only served a disgusting vegetarian dinner, it looked like a cow barfed, and frankly cow barf would probably have tasted better. Air Canada, and Iceland Air had the best entertainment, But the best food definitely was Air Greenland, it was almost like a michelin restaurant offered take out, alas they only have one long haul distance, Copenhagen-Kangerlussuaq.

As a Flight Attendant I appreciate the last two tips ;) A tip from me is to pack moisturizing face masks! (I would recommend sheet masks -they are convenient and they don't have too much liquid so you can bring it in your carry on), your skin will be so dry and thirsty from the air on the plane and you have enough time to do it. Your skin will be grateful! And don't worry about looking funny ;) For people with long hair: bring scrunchies! They don't bend and pull your hair as much as normal hair ties, therefore it's more comfortable.

1. Carry empty water bottles through security, then fill them up. Or just buy the biggest bottles you can find after security.2. Great post for "Rookie Travelers". A couple of other ideas to add that I use for both short and long haul: 1. If you make your own itinerary.... Write it all out! and Organize each ticket stage in order to make it smoother as you transfer. 2. If you have connections before or after long haul... Determine other connecting transportation methods in case of delays or cancellations. This will speed you up and beat the other inconvenienced passengers you just traveled with! 3. ZYCAM and Liquid sanitizer! A must with all the germs. Helps me every week I travel.. No sicknesses! Thanks again and love your information and travels!

Max Mustermann That's not actually what happens. The plane is not air conditioned; it's heated - they are flying through subzero temperatures at these altitudes. And less heating is always cheaper. Mark, best thing to make a flight more enjoyable is to request a seat with a screaming young kid in the seat in the row behind you. Preferably the kid that will also kick the back of your chair constantly, throw bits of food at you and randomly make vile bodly smells through barf or worse - it's best when the parents of said kid do not give a flying fig about the kids behaviour and are soley focusing on drinking as much alcohol as possible. Wow, happy times!

Best advice given to me (and we took it). Travel business class, not economy. Sure it'll cost more (but in this day and age they're affordable). Once you've done it, you'll ALWAYS travel business class. Or if you're on a budget, consider "premium economy". Plenty of videos on KZbin to help you decide what's best for you.

Agree. I would also recommend some hand creme, moisturizer for the face and lip balm (all in the zip lock bag ) or anything you would need because the air gets very dry. I also recommend something to read and a scarf bc. Of cold planes. And I bring my inflatable neck pillow for better sleep.

The pressure and humidity problem never bothers me, because I live higher and drier than most airplane cabins. If this does bother you, try and find flights on a 787 or A350, as those planes are usually pressurized a little more, and keep the air more humid.

While seated, slowly grab the back of both knees and bring them up slowly to your chest and slowly return. I have back issues and this works. Sit straight up and press your feet against the floor, hold for a moment and release. Gets the blood flowing. Remind yourself every X hours to walk the aisle. Avoid meal times though. I have flown the world and I use these techniques.

@lockergr

Get muscle relaxers before you go. The spasms can be criminally painful and staying quiet impossible. Get a two hour massage for that area before you go. Tell them before you arrive that you specifically want them to work on your sciatica as you will be taking a long-haul flight. When I have had sciatica I have been afraid to drive because when the pain comes I cannot control what happens and I always was afraid that I would get in a crash. Terrible issue. Losing weight helps. Avoid sitting too much in the weeks leading up to your travels.

If you have even a tiny bit of a headache - take pain killers before you get on (a few hours if you can) take extra with you. Also if you have never flown long haul or over water before take travel sickness tablets even if you dont normally get air sick. I've flown heaps around Australia and never had a problem, flew 4 weeks before our european trip did canberra to perth return in 36hrs no problems. But I started to get a headache before our Perth to Dubai flight, didn't take enough in headache tablets and that combined with air sickness made me so sick i nearly couldn't get on the flight to Munich. thank god for the pharmacy in dubai airport. weirdly i think it was flying over water for such a long period of time that made it worse but who knowns. going home i wasn't well on the dubai to perth leg but fine london to dubai and dubai to munich. just dont assume you wont be sick

One tip as well if you're on the larger side (like myself) one of the drawbacks of getting an exit or bulkhead seat on most carriers is that the tray table and tv are stored in the armrest. As a result, they are fixed, thus limiting the seat width further.

long haul flights, choose isle seats, being person who never pays for choosing a seat, I am always early at check in and ask for isle seat ,works every time , you control your own movements, thus you can exercise / go to toilet ,get stuff out of your carryon, anytime you want without worrying about "being a bother. and this is biggy ! you can load last, there's no need to be on plane for any longer than you need to be."Do not have small bag as he said ,you need that space in front of you for your feet ( which are in warm socks,, durable ones that you can work around in ) shoes are off until you land ( at which point you stay seated until its your turn to exit plane, just relax and wait thankful that you have arrived, nobodies going anywhere fast getting off a plane!

I prefer a stop-over flight instead of non-stop flight. It takes overall longer hours, but far less tired, usually cheaper and have a chance to see new places. In some airports an agents offer a sightseing tour.

I used to be a travel agent and one important item you forgot to mention is if you want to sit in an emergency row exit and yes you absolutely get much more leg room is you MUST BE ABLE TO HELP THE FLIGHT ATTENDANTS IN CASE OF AN EMERGENCY (OPEN THE EMERGENCY EXIT WINDOW NEXT TO YOU, DIRECT PEOPLE TO THE EXIT, ETC) If you can't or have an ounce of feeling that you don't want to be bothered about this, you need to be re-seated and cannot sit in this row also you cannot be handicapped to sit in this row. Passengers must be of able body to perform and assist in an emergency. Would you like it if on your flight there would be an emergency and someone sitting in the emergency exit row is a wheelchair bound passenger and you'd be fumbling over their legs and body? This would not be productive during an emergency. My frank choice for seating (Aisle, center, and window seats) is Window, cause when you are on the aisle and center seat your row mates may occasionally need to go to the bathroom and have to wake you. If you choose window seat, no chance for anyone waking you. Absolutely if you are lucky enough to fly the new Airbus 380's, these airplanes are huge and offer lots of walking the aisles chances. Bring with you diphenhydramine (Benedryl) it's an antihistamine and take it just prior to boarding, it will make you drowsy to more being able to relax. Yes, you are right for staying hydrated but, in addition eat and keep yourself full. Whenever I fly and I ate well on the flight, I leave the plane in my destination better to function. One huge must is arrive for your flight EARLY. When you arrive early you can relax by your gate and it will be very less stressful. When the gate agent starts to call rows to board, they usually begin by asking if there is anybody requiring extra assistance, 1st class passengers board the plane here. There will usually be no passengers on the plane and you'll have ample room for on board storage of your luggage, and be able to quickly sit at your designated seat. If you are seated at a window or center seat, utilize the call bell button above you to summon the flight attendant if you need anything like a drink, etc but, don't abuse this remember the flight attendant(s) have lots of other people to serve. If you are on Virgin America utilize the order by your touch screen monitor in front of you on the seat back of the row in front of you. Virgin America flight attendants are very nice.

I got served a banana on a carrier going to Australia; a fruit that is banned if anyone happened to put it in their pack instead of eating it on the plane! Customs had "fruit-sniffing" dogs to find contraband fruit too. One of the dogs stopped beside me and sniffed my hand that had just held the banana peel before leaving the plane... I was relieved the handler realized I'd only held fruit in my hand. I wouldn't ignore any country Custom's rules ever; not worth the fines, or worse.
