About six miles from Maastricht, in the Netherlands, lie buried 8,301 American soldiers who died in "Operation Market Garden" in the battles to liberate Holland in the fall/winter of 1944. Every one of the men buried in the cemetery, as well as those in the Canadian and British military cemeteries, has been adopted by a Dutch family who mind the grave, decorate it, and keep alive the memory of the soldier they have adopted. It is even the custom to keep a portrait of "their" soldier in a place of honor in their home. Annually, on "Liberation Day," memorial services are held for "the men who died to liberate Holland." The day concludes with a concert. The final piece is always "Il Silenzio,” (The Silence) a memorial piece commissioned by the Dutch and first played in 1965 on the 20th anniversary of Holland's liberation. It has been the concluding piece of the memorial concert ever since. This year the soloist was a 13-year-old Dutch girl, Melissa Venema, backed by André Rieu and his orchestra (the Royal Orchestra of the Netherlands). This beautiful concert piece is based upon the original version of taps and was composed by Italian composer Nino Rossi.

The audience looks as if it would not be familiar with classical music or this piece of pop trumpet.

An angel with perfect control of her instrument and self, breathing, cheeks, diaphragm . Perfect, and watching the master's guidance. Thankyou Andre' for giving these much deserved younger musicians their chance they deserve and have earned. Off grid in Oklahoma Mt.Momma

What absolutely AMAZES me, is her phenomenal breath controll. That's a very difficult piece to play at any time, but a trumpet can make or break this piece. This 13 year old lass is an absolute maestra with her mastery of this instrument. Bravo young lady. You're definitely going places.

This has brought a massive tear to me. It’s one of the first numbers I played but the Eddie Calvert version I had to hide on the balcony at the start of the second half of a gig and just start the tune I was 15 at the time. My late father was so proud will be so glad when I can go out and perform again after this pandemic in remembrance of my father who unfortunately passed from this terrible disease on 17th April last year. What a wonderful young lady played so eloquently and beautifully

I've been listening to this performance for years. This skinny little thing gets perfection out of a demanding instrument. And not just perfect notes but a heart which sings with the heavens. Such beauty!

I posted a comment previously about this video. It is a video to which I return repeatedly because of the emotions in instills in my soul and I hope viewers will forgive me for making an additional comment. This young lady's is truly incredible. The notes are perfectly on scale as well as being extremely clean and sharp. In addition, the beauty of the composition itself along with its WWll history always brings tears to my eyes.
