A 139-year-old San Francisco house got a brand-new address - seven blocks away, thanks to an extensive team of engineers and construction workers.
Early on Sunday (February 21), the mint green Victorian house was loaded onto a flatbed truck and moved from its lot on Franklin Street to its new home, several streets away on Fulton Street. Spectators turned out to cheer and take pictures as the 5,000 square foot (465 square meters) house began its journey to its new location. At several points, construction workers were needed to cut back branches so the house could pass down some of the city's tree-lined streets
The house, which needs massive repairs, sits on a prime lot - so valuable its owner has sold the property to a developer who plans to build condos on the site, according to the San Francisco Chronicle.
According to the consultant overseeing the project, the move cost approximately $200,000 and involved removing street lights, parking meters, and utility lines

Bet the original owners didn't imagine in their wildest dreams, that their house would have been upped and move to a whole new address.

True, and sadly it is moving to a less affluent neighborhood next to a dilapidated mortuary in between two housing project units. It will be turned into low income housing, and the original lot will be turned into a modern nine story apartment building with over 40 units.

@@OAT86 Hi Phil, yes, we do have low income housing. There are several neighborhoods that are devoted to Section 8 housing. I noticed most of them come with tennis courts. I recently saw condos for sale with “special pricing” for low income people. They started at $350,000 for a one bedroom, and yes, considering the fact median house prices are 1.4 million, that would qualify as a huge discount. Amazing, no?

@@MichaelJ44 here I'll help you. No need to do math Tweety Kid. Pretty common knowledge that the quake was in 1906 and Queen Victoria died in 1901. Victorian refers to the reign of Queen Victoria (1837-1901), called the Victorian era, during which period the styles known as Victorian were used in construction. ... The name represents the British and French custom of naming architectural styles for a reigning monarch.

For some reason, none of the media have reported that this house was once a very popular concert hall for Classical concerts. They could seat an orchestra of 35, and an audience of at least 50 in the main parlors. I played many piano recitals, and as a soloist with the orchestra in the early 2000s. The gaslight in the foyer was used in Hitchcock's "Gaslight." The owner always told anyone who walked in the door about the special history of the structure. It had been a boarding house prior to that I always wondered why he didn't turn it into a bed and breakfast and offer concerts at night. It could have been very profitable. It was located two blocks from the Opera House and Symphony Hall. Prime location...which is why the new owner wants to replace it with an apartment building for more than 40 units.

Well, I for one am glad it was saved and moved, and not destroyed. Also - Franklin St is so traffic laden these days it is hardly a good place for a residential house, at least in the area where it was located. I hope the place is restored to Victorian glory in its new home.....
@danielgloverpiano7693
@danielgloverpiano7693 3 жыл бұрын
@@johnmcglynn4102 I hope so, too. I have read that it will be turned into low income housing on Fulton. I walk past that location on the way to my gym (when it was open), and the mortuary was pretty rundown, also. They will sit between public housing units. That neighborhood is having a renaissance due to the upgrade to Hayes Valley. The restaurant scene had been great prior to Covid. I agree that living on Franklin would be annoying, especially if you had a car and no garage.

It says 139-year-old. Not “old home”. If I say your daughter is five-years-old, does that mean she’s an old woman? Also much of the UK’s current housing stock was built in the 20th century as well as the US, so let’s just say it’s “older than most”. Which would be true in either country
