What are your thoughts on using metformin to reduce your insulin level while on a true ketogenic diet? Been on keto (less than 20 carbs a day) since September and I'm down 90 pounds. My A1C down to 4.7 but my insulin level is 12. Will a low dose of metformin help reduce my insulin levels? Thanks
@drekberg5 жыл бұрын
Typically I would say that Metformin could speed things up if you are on keto, but if your A1c is already 4.7, I don't know that it will do much. Lost 90 lbs. Nice Job.😀 That means something is working. If you are getting results, i would not add chemicals to the mix. I would probably suggest longer fasting periods to get the insulin to release it s grip. Try 24h, 36h, 48h etc. See how you feel and when and if you're ready try 7 days or so. Just be sure to monitor closely, because taking medication on a fast could make you hypoglycemic.

Was diagnosed with diabetes 20 + years ago. My former doctor advised a low fat high carb diet with various medications. I got much fatter and sicker. Doctor blamed it on me. Said I was eating to much. The only reason I got better was because of doctors like you on you tube. Six years ago started eating low carb, high fat, moderate protein, and I only eat two meals a day, no snacks. Hunger is never a issue, despite the fact that before I changed my diet I was always hungry. I'm now down 70 pounds.Could stand to lose another 15. Blood sugar not perfect at 105, but a1c at 5.6, Triglycerides way down at 110, have plenty of energy and feel good and healthy. Thank you for what you do doc.

Any doctor who recommends a high carb diet to any diabetic, Type I or 2, should go back to med school and try again. NO doctor should ever encourage carbs, especially processed carbs, to a diabetic. It's a known fact however, that many doctors know little about Diabetes. My husband is a T1D and has been for 55 years. One clueless doctor nearly killed him years back, and I fired him! Meanwhile some true experts moved to our area and things became much better for diabetics. Don't ever be afraid to fire a bad or less knowledgeable doctor; they are certainly not all created equally and the good ones are worth fighting for to be under their care!

When I was diagnosed with type2, my doctor said to eat oatmeal and blueberries. I looked at her with a puzzled look and asked if she truly believed that carbs will help with type 2 diabetes. @@hrh-xj4fh I disagree. The diet I was eating caused the condition. My blood sugar is perfectly normal and has been so for years. I have reintroduced limited carbs back into my diet and I'm normal. The most prophetic thing I have heard on this subject was written by Dr Jason Fung in his book the diabetes code is “ type 2 diabetes is a dietary disease, and the only solution is a dietary one”. The pill pushers at the doctors office just want to give you meds that will make you gain lots of weight. They won’t advise you to fast. The absolute worst drug you can use is a long acting insulin, you will do nothing but gain weight. Fasting and exercise is the answer.

At the point of writing I have lost about 11 stones (150 lbs or so) since July of 2018 - But 8 of those stones since January 2019... Having been fat for around 20 years, I finally found explanations which made sense over Xmas of 2018 reference my own over production of insulin. I have found that if I don't provoke my pancreas into overdoing the insulin, the weight just falls off me. This is not about over consumption of cakes and biscuits... this is about not eating fruit, Weetabix, Shredded wheat, corn-oil; not eating 3 times a day and instead eating when properly hungry etc, etc, etc. My HB1AC has fallen from 6.5 in May of 2018 to 5.1 in July of this year. I no longer take any meds for the diabetes and my blood pressure is now very nearly normal. If only I knew what I have recently found out but 20 years ago. Too much insulin makes you fat and stops you losing weight - good luck everyone - is someone like me can do it *so can you*

the reason why most physicians lack education regarding diet is because since big pharma owns the medical schools, they deliberately don't include diet education for doctors. because if everyone starts getting diet advice from their doctors, they'll start feeling better which means less meds and profit for big pharma. as a doctor, you should know that because non-holistic doctors work for big pharma.

I started to educate myself recently because I really need to lose weight and no matter how hard I workout I cannot lose it. This really shows me why after 9 months of heavy excessive I only lost 15lbs. A nutritionist tried to tell me I just wasn't active enough and told me to eat carbs, but with meat and veggies. Now I just eat the meat and nothing else and lost 4lbs in one week without exercise. It's sad that even going to a nutritionist doesn't help. At least we have youtube, so thank you.

Get a hi-potency potassium supplement, take a dime sized sprinkle of salt (I drink it down ini one gulp with a tablespoon of water follwoed by a nice big glass of water. Otherwise you're gonna feel dizzy & weak as you get dehydrated. Pharmacist here, and I'd just like to offer my input. You do an amazing job explaining things, and you are absolutely right in everything you say. I was once a certified diabetes educator, and have since moved on to different pastures. One thing that we are taught is to explain clearly to patients the extreme importance of lifestyle modifications, and we are urged to recommend the ADA guidelines for exercise (30 minutes of moderate intensity exercise daily). I find that many medical doctors over medicate patients, and don't stress the pivotal importance of lifestyle modifications. By contrast I find that Doctors of Osteopathic medicine push lifestyle modifications harder than Medical Doctors. So for patients who struggle with lifestyle modifications I tend to refer them to DOs rather than MDs as they tend to be more receptive to lifestyle modifications under the care of a DO, in my opinion. Another thing I'd like to add is that GLP-1 agonists actually work in more ways than you suggest. GLP-1 agonists are more similar to mimetics as they are designed to mimic the effect of Glucagon Like Peptide 1, an endogenous hormone secreted by L-cells of the distal illium and colon. They: 1) Amplify the glucose dependent insulin response. This is different from sulfonylureas as sulfonylureas force the pancreas to secrete more insulin. This is why there is an increased risk of hypoglycemia with sulfonylureas that we don't see with GLP-1 Agonists. 2) Inhibit glucagon release. 3) Suppress appetite. 4) Slow gastric emptying So while GLP-1 agonists do cram cells full of sugar, they also help promote people to eat less, and lose weight. This may give people the edge they need as hunger is often the biggest struggle for people who are attempting to lose weight. I love the work that you do, and I find you extremely fascinating. I could watch your lectures all day!

@francesknighton28365 жыл бұрын
@@catalinacassineri6435 Yes, we have lost weight. It is coming off slowly for me and quicker for my husband. We are focusing on the blood sugar numbers. This is the first "diet" (now a way of eating for us) that has made a huge difference in the blood glucose. When I started my fasting glucose was 182 and it came down about 10 points each week. It is still not where I want it, but is much better. I have also gradually cut back on the Metformin over 2 months. After a week, my husband found he didn't need to take insulin shots any more. He monitors it very closely, but without the carbs, his numbers stayed good without the shots. No doctor had ever told us we could improve our diabetes if we cut out the carbs. They always said to take the drugs and lose weight, but the plan to lose weight had too many carbs and never worked long term. This is like a miracle for us, yet so simple.

My A1C did go down from 5.0 to 4.8 and my Triglycerides did drop from 145 to 122 but LDL went even higher. If berberine is really as similar to Metformin as I've read, could this be why I stopped losing weight ? Is the berberine forcing the blood sugar into fat storage ?

Berberine helps improve insulin resistance, so that would be unlikely. Dr. Ben Bikman has addressed Berberine. Same with Mike Mutzel. You can look them up. I finally understand it. I never knew what the drugs actually did. My doctor for years just said no cakes and fruit. Go get your drugs. After I started keto 2 months ago a1c dropped 4 point. Weight is down 10 kilos. I still have neuropathy in feet and hands though.
@jeanreynolds14253 жыл бұрын
take doctors, best Benfotiamine 300 twice a day . it stops the neuropathy so you can sleep. go luck
@Rhonda223 жыл бұрын
Keep up the keto, add in intermittent fasting and once you get to a normal weight the neuropathy may go away, or lessen significantly.

Great video! I wish I had this knowledge back when I got diagnosed with type 2 diabetes. I would not have fallen for the lies and miss treatments that doctors prescribed. Since I started the Keto diet, along with IF, my sugar levels are normal and I have los 30lbs. Limit the intake of sugar, simple yet so powerful! Thank you Doc for putting this info out there!

My favourite meal while fasting is artichoke( from a jar,in olive oil) tomato,red pepper, mackerel or sardines, ( it has to be fish) and olives. It seems to work for belly bloat and flattening it. Not more than a tea cup full We eat too much, too much variety sometimes.

Sten Ekberg has provided the most amazing insights into the body and treating type 2 diabetes. While I have trouble getting others who I know need this info to watch the videos, I am able to pass on what I learn to help others, such as my family members and friends. For the ones willing to listen, we are all now losing weight and getting much healthier. Amazing. Cheers.

I really appreciate you for the knowledge that you share. A few years ago I suffered a significant back injury and as a result I gained a lot of weight. Before my injury I was very active, playing sports, hiking, hunting and fishing. My job was labor intensive as well. Then my doctor told me I had developed type 2 diabetes and prescribed medication. When I got home I looked up the medication on the internet. It said to use this medication where diet and exercise did not work. I was kind of ticked off and only used the medication for a short time. On my next visit to the doctor I told him that I had stopped taking the medication. He asked why. I told him what I found on the internet about diet and exercise and that we hadn't tried either one. I also told him that I thought that was sheer laziness for both of us. After that I cut away back on sugar and try to be as active as I can be despite my injury. Since then I have lost 60 pounds and lower my blood sugar significantly. You are very inspirational and have great videos, thank you so much. More people need to hear your massage because popping pills should be a last resort.

I noticed that berberine was not on your list. My naturopathic doctor had me taking that and I read that it behaved like metformin. I was wondering if you could go over that for those of us who have been taking it. Thank you for all your great information.

@@rosethorns1893 i just started trying the berberine so we'll see how it goes. I'll never eat grains or sugar as a way of life again though. Those foods make me feel too awful. In the morning I'm always bloated with a really weird off feeling. Stuffy. Headache. I don't know how I did it for so long. I guess people just get used to it.

Dr. Sten has the most common sense explanation. He explains it so that all people can understand it. 10 years ago I was very confused, but the more I watched the more I learned. Having been a chef, I now am on a keto/carnivore diet for a number of years.

Lots of good information. My A1C is slowly dropping as I've really limited the carbs. I am on Metformin, but it shouldn't be bad since I've gone low carb. Metformin does have a lot of other good components that are actually good for you in other categories. Hopefully I'll be out of pre-diabetes soon & I will be able to drop it.

Been on 500mg of Metformin twice daily for 15 years, plus meds for high blood pressure. Always ignored the doctors and did what I wanted. Now they tell me my kidney, liver, pancreas and thyroid functions are are down and if I don't lose the weight and exercise I'll be on dialysis within 3-5 years looking for a transplant. Have gone to lower carbs (only allow 6oz of berries) and intermittent fasting (was 16/8 now 18/6 and considering OMAD) plus exercise. Was wondering if dropping Metformin would be an acceptable change as well.

Maybe also consider Ancestral Supplements? You can read about them on their website.

Good luck with your quest. I dropped 50 pounds and my A1C levels dropped back to normal and my doctor took me off Metformin. The exercise really helped in my case, walking 5 miles a day.

Extremely informative and interesting video, thank you Dr.Ekberg. One thing I noticed you didn't mention, is sleep. From what I understand good quality sleep is paramount in reducing insulin sensitivity and helping the body regenerate and recover from inflammation etc. I'm no expert but have a great interest in this being a type 2 diabetic that is overweight and struggling to lose weight. Between you and Dr.Eric Berg there is some really valuable information to be had. Thank you very much again.

Thank you so much, Dr.Ekberg. I understood that video very well. Trying to understand insulin resistance can be very confusing. You explain very well and are a great teacher. You're changing the future for me and lots of other suffering people who have very few sources of correct information. God bless you.

I'm still confused so is suppleme ts bad then? Berberine does same ?
@stevec38723 жыл бұрын
After 6 months on a keto diet and losing 35 pounds I don't believe I am any longer insulin resistant. The blood work from a few days ago for my yearly physical shows a HOMA-IR score of 0.4 because both my fasting insulin and glucose are so low, as well as my triglyceride/HDL ratio of 0.74 because my triglycerides have fallen lower than my HDL which went up 29 points, and finally from my liver panel where my AST/ALT ratio is 1.2 with a score over 1 indicating there is no insulin resistance. So I'll just stay on the path that has got me to this point.

Thank you Steve C for sharing your story. That is great. I am thrilled that you have seen such great results. Keep it up! With a HOMA-IR of 0.4 you can safely assume that you are not IR. 😄

Dr Sten I have been following you for 3years I have followed your advice and I have lost the weight I wanted too for the past 50 years. Thank you for your advise that makes sense and easy to follow. I just turned 80 and healthy except for the occasional knee pains. Thank you again. Is it OK to have a sweet treat once a week?

God bless you Doctor Ekberg you have answered my questions. I was diagnosed in Jan 2022 with diabetes. I immediately did intermittent fasting and my readings went to between 5 and 5.5 the overall reading over a 4 week period done by the Doctor was 4.8 I'm still on metformin and hoping Doctor will take me off meds on my next visit. I listen to what my body tells me and my hunger has disappeared because of no sugar, potatoes, rice and pasta. In fact I have lost my craving for potatoes. I'm battling a bit with the pasta which I eat on occasions but that has to go as well. My diet is low carb and I hear what you say I need to make this my lifestyle else I will gain the weight again. I have lost 20kg since Jan 2022 and am working on to lose another 10kg by 1st August 2022 😁 thank you for all the info you share.
