So far, this is the DEFINITIVE series on knowledgeable winter camping! I prefer to return to known camp areas. The idea that a tent with a stove awaits, no matter how snowy and arduous the journey out, makes the 'shelter' real! In the series, we see the joys and functionality of partnership. A couple turns 'hardship' into something memorable and safe. For sure, I would have liked to see more fish in the creel...maybe it is winter.

I love your entire video. However, I especially loved your commentary at the end of the video. It expresses how I feel about being outside in the cold, and the snow, and in the wilderness. Some people get it and others are not drawn to the outdoors all year long. But what you expressed is the way I feel about being out, year round, including the winter. Thank you.

This could be the ideal therapy for seasonal affective disorder for those living in the north. I like the axe system - saving yourself the headache of forgetting it and losing it in buried snow. One additional precaution, to save a bigger headache : eye protection when splitting wood. Any goggles or glasses. If hiking in is hard, hiking out with an eye injury would be truly brutal.
@LostLakes
@LostLakes 2 жыл бұрын
It really is. November is always a down month, then once things get properly cold around here in December the mood swings back up. You're so right about the eye protection. Eye injury is one of my biggest fears so you'd think I'd have made a point of it
@seanarthur2414
@seanarthur2414 2 жыл бұрын
@@LostLakes totally agree about November…it’s dreary. On eye protection, open water fishing is another scenario in which I almost always try to have something. Usually the sun is a good reminder. But the transition to dusk is a dangerous time in my opinion, easy to make mistakes (bugs distracting you, rods in your retinas adjusting to dimming light, and fish biting at the surface sometimes leading to the zinging lure phenomenon on a missed hook set). So I bring the specks and swap when the sun is going down.

Couple things I've learned making quinzhees: If you can't dig out your space down to ground before you begin piling, you risk lack of cohesion between the dome and it's footing (like when it collapsed on you). The dome wall foundation must be as well-set-up as the dome. You can also fully workharden a flat area first (good if working on a slope), or my preferred method, mark a centre point with a stick, take the tallest person's ski pole (you) and loop the strap around the stick, pull it gently out to it's full extension and walk a circle multiple times in just boots, stomping down and mixing up as much you can (really pack it down, you're looking to collapse the air out of the snow), mark the outside edge with twigs. This packs in your dome wall foundation, build your dome tall and round out to the twig-marked diameter. As you discovered, adequate height is your goal, width is easy; a good target for height is your height on your knees, plus your arm extension up. Round domes are ideal, cones are hard to excavate nicely inside (similar to the difference between a teepee tent and a wall tent). You can dump a bunch of non-essential gear (like full backpacks) in the centre to aid excavation. Start digging up as soon as you can, carve out sections top to bottom (like an orange), this leaves some kind of a pillar to help support the roof until almost all the snow is out. The wire bail handle of a 5gal bucket does an EXCELLENT job of shaving the walls smooth, waaay easier and nicer finish than a shovel. Don't forget an 2-3" air hole 2/3 of the way up the wall. If you sleep in your quinzhee (or burn a bunch of candles) it'll set up from the inside and sag much less in the short term.

Lol...if my sister took me along for a camp in that snow and cold she just knows I'd burrow under all the stuff in the sled, would have to drag the sled into the tent and place it next to the stove till it was totally defrosted. Then I'd recover from hibernation. Call me Ursa the bear 🐻 🐻‍❄ 😏. But for sure it looks like you had an awesome time. Here in South Africa in Winter if it shows a minus we put on the heaters and electric blankets. I wonder if a South African could survive -25 to -35. For sure I couldn't. Have fun, enjoy the wine 🍷 😉 and champagne 🍾 and have a wonderful 2022 of camping and adventures.

Even tho this is a compilation of past videos, I needed this so bad. Still hoping for a big snowfall so I can hit the trail with my hot tent and stove in a couple of weeks. Happy New Year to you and Erin.
